Knight of the Dead (2013)
Very Middle of the Road
I'm a big fan of Knight movies and a sucker for anything with zombies in it, so as soon as I saw this I had to check it out. Basically it involves a small group of knights who have to escort a monk carrying the Holy Grail through a valley infested with zombies created by the Black Plague. That idea sounds awesome, but the movie never really gets going. None of the characters really get much depth added to them. The one character I was cheering for, gets killed halfway through and from there I was wondering where this movie was going. Beside fending off zombies, the group is followed into the valley by another group intent on revenge for one their number getting killed earlier. But why the leader feels so compelled to follow the knights over one death is never explained and even then he only takes one other man with him, despite having several others with him. The action scenes were okay for the most part, but nothing that stands out. It's not great, but it's a short enough way to divert your time if you have a spare 90 minutes, but don't expect much. This concept has so much potential but if you're after a great medieval zombie movie this isn't it.
El Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial (2011)
A Light Hearted Adventure
I recently came across this movie and being a big sword and sorcery fan had to give it a look. Apparently it's based on comic which I wasn't aware of, but you don't need to have read it or even heard of it to take in the story. Overall while it was never going to win any awards, I thought it was fun, light hearted adventure. It had some good action scenes and some nice looking scenery. The violence is fairly tame, so you don't have to worry if you're squeamish. There are a couple plot holes, the most obvious is the "worm" that appears several times during the movie. Most notably at the end but didn't really add anything and could probably have been ditched altogether without affecting the story at all. The actors were never going to especially challenged, but the main hero is suitably heroic, the sidekicks are have their own moments of glory and provide some comedic relief and the Viking Princess was suitably feisty. The villains are fairly generic, but provide enough of a danger to make you wonder how things will pan out. I wasn't expecting much, but the movie kept my interest right the way through. This movie isn't going to change any lives, but if you're a sword and sorcery fan, it's a harmless way to fill in 90 minutes.
Nate and Hayes (1983)
Fun Adventure
I remember watching this as a kid and enjoyed it, so I was curious to see if still held up and for the most part it did. Set in a South Pacific that never really existed and cutting fairly loose with history, it was still a fun adventure with plenty of action and some memorable characters. A little cheesy in places but you expect that in a movie like this. If I was to have any criticism the movie's beginning kind of robs any suspense of what happens to the crew in the rest of the movie and given Hayes relationship with his crew during the main adventure, he seems pretty blasé about what happens to them at the start, it was at odds with how he was portrayed for the most part. That said a good fun adventure.
Dragons of Camelot (2014)
Okay movie
Being a big sword and fantasy fan, as well as being a fan of anything to do with King Arthur or Dragons I had to give this a look. It's not great, the budget must have been fairly small, the story is pretty formulaic, and it's pretty clear where things are going, and the characters thinly drawn, though the actors seemed to be doing the best with what they had. The battle scenes are basic, though I thought the final battle was quite lively. There were some nice looking castles showcased and I thought the Dragon CGI was pretty successful, though it's a shame they didn't have the budget to give them more to do. So kind of cheesy, but if you're a fantasy fan, it's okay way to pass 80 minutes if you don't expect too much.
