Defendor (2009)

is it a comedy, is it a tragedy... no, it is Defendor!
10 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Defendor 2009

This is like a super hero movie which an Iranian film maker would have made… realistic, undramatic and hence not very entertaining… it's not for the kids like super hero movies usually are… there is a hooker… there is consumption narcotics … sex… violence… and a very simple minded but stupidly brave and naive superhero…

Woody Harrelson as the super hero is as usual awesome … he's the slow man who holds traffic signs during day but becomes a super hero with a costume at night… he uses marbles and other assortment of things as weapons and isn't scared of bullets as he feels they will just bounce off him… he's out to find and eliminate Captain Industry, a fictional villain from the comics he used to read as a kid but who he believes is real and the cause of his mother's death. He is told that the local drug lord is Captain Industry and so he sets out single handedly to battle the drug cartel… in the process he gets beaten up many times but doesn't give up… soon he starts to have a following amongst the common people as a real super hero might have…

My problem with this film is its changing genres… at moments it seems funny… but then it becomes action… then sad… then funny again and so on and so forth… in the end Woody Harrelson doesn't really achieve much as a super hero, getting bashed up often… and what I don't understand is when the bad guys know who he is and where he stays why don't they just kill him? Doesn't make sense to me as the corrupt cop knows about him…

Anyway that aside, it's still a slow movie which can't make up its mind what it is… a comedy, an action or a spoof… in the end it just remains nothing… just emotional movie about a dumb super hero

Moon (2009)
8/10
this moon has got all the stars
10 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Now this a real gem of a small movie… it's atmospheric… claustrophobic… haunting and spellbinding… I came across this by accident and I'm glad I did… if one is expecting Star Wars or Aliens kind of action/horror then this is not the movie for them… but if one is willing to be lead slowly down a twisted and bewildering plot than one will find this truly enjoyable remarkable and memorable experience…

And besides that the acting is superb… Sam Rockwell holds the film on his shoulders and he is incomparable… in fact all the Sam Rockwell's are excellent and as the plot unravels one is truly taken by surprise as things are most unexpected…

The concept is unique – Sam Bell is an astronaut and the sole employee working on Moon for Lunar Industries. His shift is for three years and he is readying to go back to earth to his wife. But the last few days are getting too tough on him as he starts to hallucinate… his only interaction here in the past three years is with Gerty his computer-cum- assistant. But even Gerty is unable to tell him what is happening to him… and things go haywire when he has an accident on the surface of the moon and later wakes up back in the space station in suspicious circumstances… looking for answers about himself he finds the vehicle in which he had the accident earlier and is stunned to find a body there… And thus begins a series of discoveries that makes Sam suspect everything – the company, his job, his wife, himself, his reality and his sanity… his only objective henceforth is to return to earth in any way he can…

This is truly an awesome and unforgettable movie… not many movies like this out there… with no villains, no mutants, no zombies, no aliens, no animals… no big budget special effects… just one man and his battle with his realization… it truly is an experience like no other… not to be missed.

Pandorum (2009)
4/10
a bit complicated for a mindless slasher horror film
10 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A very strange and complicated slasher-horror-zombie film set in the confines of a space ship. It sets its own rules of space travel which take some time to understand. Basically there is this space ship with pods with living humans in them who are asleep for 100s of years (the earth has 'ended' and they are the only ones alive, we are told like Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy which is far superior sci if creation)…

The space ship is traveling from earth to some far off planet and humans work in shifts… not the regular 8 hours shift like you and me but shifts lasting days/months… while one shift sleeps in its pods the other shift works and vice versa… the film begins when two men wake up and open their pods to find they have no memory of who they are or what they are supposed to do (Plot angle rented from Unknown?)…

Slowly they start remembering and realize the ship is doomed unless they switch on the reactor or some such machine… so one man sits on the controls guiding the other through the labyrinth of dark tunnels and ducts… the man in the tunnels reaches a place where he finds creatures who eat humans for snacks and humans who eat insects for snacks! (in this food chains the creatures are on top) all of them live in the dark recesses of the ship…

These creatures snarl and chase the man in the tunnels… while the man at the controls of the ship starts to have an 'encounter' with another man who seems to be crazy, he's suffering from Pandorum… which they tell us is space sickness that makes men hallucinate and go mad turning him into a mass murder and finally making him a flesh eating mutant… many twists and turns later the film ends (one of these twist is generously borrowed from Fight Club and Secret Window)… leaving one confused and least caring about what happens to anyone at all… there were many times I wanted the mutants to eat the humans and get the gory torture over with… once more like 'Creep' the mutants here are super strong and super fast and super ugly and super hungry… leaving me just super unconcerned about it all

Creep (I) (2004)
3/10
more gory than creepy
10 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
creep (2004) A woman misses the last train in London subway and is locked in the station … still wondering what to do she sees a train pull up… she gets in and it stops midway in a tunnel… an acquaintance of hers is also in the train and tries to rape her but just before he can do major harm he's pulled away by something unseen in the dark… and now the creature that has saved the above woman starts to stalk her trying to cut her into little pieces and eat her up I guess… While the concept is interesting the film's script itself is repetitive… the girl keeps on meeting new guys in the isolated underground all of whom start getting bumped off a bit later… she remains alive as the film has to run for at least 90 minutes… And it always happens that the girl getting the creature down and out has just to kill it and the film will be over … but she leaves the creature alive and it comes back to chase her again… it happens THREE times! Girl hits bad creature… bad creature down, almost dead… girl doesn't finish the job and kill it… girl runs… bad creature gets up angrier than ever… repeat and rehash above sequence… so not a very interesting film… specially when you give the creature super human strength… and the girl a super low IQ.

The Bounty Hunter (I) (2010)
5/10
like eating 2 minutes noodles... nothing extraordinary but not too bad either
9 July 2010
The bounty hunter 2010

A chick flick with nothing unique or special… one has seen such films countless times before and will continue to see them in future… the only thing I can say in its praise is that it's better than the story less chick flicks bollywood seems to be churning out nowadays… Gerard Butler is an ex cop bounty hunter whose ex wife is a hot shot reporter who is suspicious about an open and shut case… she starts to investigate a lead and hence doesn't turn up in court for her parking tickets' hearing… the court is sick of waiting for Ms. Jennifer and puts out a warrant for her arrest… a bounty hunter is employed to get her and he happens to be Mr. Butler… he arrests her without delay but now starts a sort of road movie with the 'killer' out to get Ms. Aniston… the bounty hunter turns saviour as the ex-couple sets out to find what the hell is happening… and in the process re-discover their love.

The film could have been funny and romantic and dramatic but it seems insipid… its like taking your girlfriend out and treating her to Maggi noodles… you expect so much but all you gets is something limp and soggy but not bad to taste…

Gerard was way better in The Ugly Truth. He's one action hero who is comfortable in chick flicks as well… he's not camera shy and hence very comfortable on screen in whatever he's doing… unlike Aniston who seems too heavily decked up and restrained and beautiful and pleasant looking… clearly she looks like she is acting … not natural at all… she should try and be like what she was in Friends and stop producing the strange films she does with herself in them and herself in every frame (Management 2008 – a very dull film that makes Indian chick flicks look classic and super funny in comparison)…

The one funny guy in the movie was Aniston's colleague who kissed her once and is under the impression that she is having an affair with her. If only he had more to do in this movie instead of just being a cut way from the lead couple…

I'm sure in a few days from now I might not remember any scene or character from this film
