The Witches (2020)
Another remake nobody asked for
I love Octavia and Anne, but this movie seems like it was rushed and that they were just phoning it in.
To begin with, the original is a cult classic, so how dare you mess up with it. Then, if you are gonna do it, well, do it well. They were clearly going for a kids friendly movie but I mean, this story is creepy. The mouse animation takes you away from it, specially coming from Henson's animatronics. The Great Witch reveal is underwhelming, and the changes/additions to the story don't serve it. It just doesn't adds up.
It pains me that Cuaron and Del Toro are attached to this project as producers. Zemeckis seems to be going in decline and it just sucks. Dahl's fans may be happier with this ending, but with all the other changes I dunno how they can be happy with the movie in general.
Better Watch Out (2016)
Not for everyone but really good
Be advise that if you have major triggers with the patriarchy you may don't like this movie.
To begin with its advertised as a horror/comedy but it's more of a horror/thriller with some comedy on top. It's disturbing and it will make you sick, so past the 40 minute Mark you will stop laughing and start getting nauseous as how plausible this scenario may actually be, minus the over the top incidents, but you get the geez.
I say you get more than what you paid for, but if you just wanted to laugh, then go somewhere else.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
It's not the book, very different
If you read the book chances are you are going to be disappointed. It's not a bad movie, but it takes a different approach and it just goes a different rout than the book so in the end you just stand there feeling betrayed. It doesn't make it justice.
If you haven't read the book this a great philosophical movie, it's slow, it tackles a lot of issues about being human in a non traditional way and if you are not a fan of this time of cinema you may not like it. But if you like confusing, mind tricking (a little on the nose) movies, you may enjoy this one.
My first instinct was to not like it because it was so different from the book, but if I think a little deeper, as a separate thing, it's not a bad movie. I just wish he had 'ended things' properly.
Fame: The Musical (2020)
Bad script, poorly acted and terrible proshot!
I love musicals, and I really liked the original movie, but this is a train wreck. I keep reading this production got rave reviews but honestly I cannot see how. It probably reads better live, but honestly the actors are playing caricatures of the characters and they are not grounded in reality. They are all stereotypes and playing just for the jokes. Now, to top it off proshot of it it's terrible. A lot of bad close ups, audio issues and terrible editing made a painful viewing experience for a musical. You miss the big musical numbers in favor of a close of an actor who is out of frame half of the time. It's just a big miss, like the 2009 remake of the movie.
