Ribspreader (2022)
The king of sleaze!
Dick Dale has delivered in spades with this his first feature after 20 plus years of giving us some of the most demented and hilarious short films. Ribspreader has something for everyone, but is mainly a love letter to sleaze and horror fans. Equal parts hilarious and dark, there's plenty of blood and gore on show. It really does pack a lot in for a modest budget. Action, blood, gore, sex punk rock and comedy. Also has some of the funniest Australian slang I've heard in a film and cameos from some of Australia's most loved underground musicians and performers. If don't enjoy this film on some level, you might not have a soul! See it!
My Cherry Pie (2021)
A horror fans horror film!
Co-directors Addison Heath and Jasmine Jakupi know their source material. This film is a fantastic homage to slasher and exploitation cinema of the 70's and 80's that could only be made by people that love and know these genres. Black Forest Films keep upping their game on every subsequent feature they put out. Their previous efforts Mondo Yakuza, The Vipers Hex and Under a Kaleidoscope are all excellent films too. My Cherry Pie is no different amd they continue to make lovingly crafted independent cinema that resonates with genre fans. My Cherry Pie is a mashup of 80's American slasher, Italian Giallo and sleaze with a dash of Aussie crime. Funny as hell, gory and just total fun. The cast are all excellent in their respective roles, the camera work, editing and lighting are a real highlight along mixing perfectly with the score too. Again, this film will be much more appreciated by hardened horror fans amd students of underground cinema with a bunch of references to all our horror and sleaze favourites from tje 70's and 80's. Even knowing all of this the story is fresh and the dialogue original. Did I mention the gore!? There's heaps of practical bloodletting and deaths by chainsaw! The location is an abandoned hospital from the early 1900's which is super creepy and used to great advantage which really elevates the production. Just an all round beautiful looking film and a whole lot of fun. Loved it.
Sleeping Beauties (2023)
DERANGED with a twist of J horror!
No spoilers. This film has serious DERANGED vibes mixed equally with J Horror ghost visuals. The plot seems fairly straight forward at first, but takes a crazy twist mid way. The lead actors do a great job in the 'crazy' department and get more and more unhinged as the film progresses. Kooky doesn't describe this film well
Enough. The location of the film and surrounds are all creepy rural Australia which is used really well in hovering drone shots setting up the isolation of the area. While obviously shot on a budget the cinematography, lighting and set design are all top tier. There's some blood while not being an overly gory film the practical and cgi effects are used to good effect. This film has many different layers and was entertaining rather than scary. It takes a fairly well used haunted house type story and turns it on it's head taking to places you wouldn't expect, so it expounded upon those clichés and turned the story into something more. There are multiple storyline's happening in this film and sometimes that felt overwhelming, but once I was in the groove I enjoyed the characters motivations more which helps to swallow the crazy ending! Highly entertaining and something truly original while very familiar at the same time.
Blood Vessel (2019)
Every box ticked!
I had the chance to see BLOOD VESSEL at 2019's Monsterfest screening in Melbourne with cast and crew Q&A afterwards which was a pleasure to see director Justin Dix and crew showing just how much heart and love they have for genre content which shows in every frame of the film. Newcomers to genre film will be both entertained by the creepy premise, location and characters and amazed by some extremely cool visuals and practical make-up effects. I would have loved this film as a 15 year old newcomer to horror, but enjoyed it just as much now as a hardened 45 year old genre fan! Dix's influences and in particular homages to 70's and 80's action and horror film are very much on display here without blatently ripping off any one film, rather appearing as fun easter eggs for more seasoned horror veterans. As eluded to in the title of my review this film really does have something for everyone. An ensemble cast reminisent of films like THE THING or ALIENS, a fantastic mix of some old mythology with fresh new twists, excellent lighting, cinematography and score all topped off with genuinely exciting and gruesome special make-up effects. This film deserves to be seen by as many genre fans as possible and Dix and crew need to be offered some very high praise for going above and beyond with the concept of the film instead of just another tired exercise in 'slice'n'dice' slasher film territory as we've come to see in recent years time and again. Dix's background in prosthetics and practical make-up effects with his company Wicked of Oz studios in Melbourne, Australia obviously served the film well, showcasing loads of talent from Oz artists with some fantastic horror character work on display too! Atmospheric, creepy and jam packed with action and suprises. A horror fan's dream film. Dix's enthusiasm for the genre is helping to raise the bar for Australian horror. I'll be revisiting BLOOD VESSEL upon it's streaming and hard copy release.
