Tomahawk Trail (1957)
Tomahawk Trail, Chuck Conners in his prime
Tomawk Trail, where our hero the Sargent, Chuck Conners, must take command away from a green lieutenant who has no clue how to command an Apache outpost, the lieutenant suffers from heat exhaustion & is not capable of leading his men. The movie is predictable & low budget but is interesting because Chuck narrates the thing from time to time. I am a Chuck Conners fan, so i really enjoyed the movie myself & would recommend it to all as good family entertainment. The lieutenant threatens to court marshal our hero but takes an apache arrow through the heart at the end of movie so Chuck is off the hook & can smooch the leading lady at the end. Movie also gives Harry Dean Stanton a big part & I like anything he does, good character actor. Watch this one if you get the chance it is worth the effort. Thank you
Cool Hand Luke (1967)
Cool Hand Luke, One of Paul Newman's finest roles
I was 14 when they made this movie and it was not received well by the critics. By the time I was able to see the movie I was shocked. This was a darn fine movie and reflects a time in history that is all but forgotten now, the chain gangs. I loved this movie, Strother Martin gives his finest performance here and so does George Kennedy. Also Wayne Rogers & the whole cast is just excellent. I have the movie but never fail to watch it again when it appears on the TV. I have encourage all the young people & my own kids to watch this one, time will never destroy this important saga in history. Paul Newman is at the very height in his carrier here & I do not think he has ever topped Cool Hand Luke. Ever since i saw the movie I have been a huge Wanyne Rogers fan although he has only a small part here as the "gambler" I love it when he says "ace gets a slap in the face" I have to say this every time I play cards. The movie has a morbid side that portrays to me true life in the deep south prison system back when & should be watched by all movie buffs. Thank you.
True Grit (1969)
True Grit, Truly a darn good movie, the best of John Wayne
When i was about 14 my best friends mom took us to see True Grit, I was a western fan & a big John Wayne fan anyway, but this was my favorite Wayne film. The cast was all superb, Stother Martin as the horse trader is a must see, but a western movie without him during this era was second class. Glen Cambell sounds like he is reading his lines sometimes, but I even enjoyed him & would not consider another to replace him. Kim Darby was great in this movie & I don't think she ever came close to being as good in anything else. Rooster Cogburn,Wayne, is the US marshal who is tracking killers in the Oklahoma territory & they really git the era language & everything right this time. It was a big budget film & it shows the costumes & western outfits & scenery are all done with class. If you have never seen the movie then u must see it, western movie fan or not, you will be amazed, trust me. I have the movie, but every time it is on the TV I will watch it again & again. I have noticed that people in this western are witty & like to make clever dialog, but this would be true in the 1800's as they had little to entertain themselves with. This movie starts with a killing, then a hanging, & is filled with non-stop action the rest of the way through, there are just no dull moments to it. I cannot say enough of good about it. I loved it & recommend it as wholesome family entertainment to be enjoyed by all. Thank you
Destry (1954)
Destry with Audie Murphie
Destry is a re-make of Destry Rides Again with Jimmy Stewart. I loved them both & am an Audie Murphy fan. This was one of my favorite western movies an I think that Hollywood should re-make it again, don't know why they have not as a matter of fact. Audie Murphy is brought to town as a deputy sheriff to clean up the town. He starts out as a bumbling boob & is really a very clever & sophisticated crime solver. Thomoas Mitchell is always good as is Edgar Buchanon. I have watched both versions every time they appear on television & would recommend Destry to anyone who has not seen it. It is more than a western movie, writing, & action will keep u interested all the way & you will be crying for more when it ends. The movie builds up all the way for a climatic showdown in the end & has everything, lots of comic references & action all the way through. I recommend it to all viewers & is a must see western fan or not. Thank you
Gun the Man Down (1956)
Gun the Man Down , movie comment
I remember this movie from long ago & have read comments on it & must agree it is boring & predictable, however i would watch it again because i am a fan of James Arness & like nearly all western movies. It is rather comical that they were so cheap on the making of the film & that John Wayne produced the movie is most remarkable. James Arness I think did his best work on Gunsmoke anyway, & he was not destined to became a major movie star. I think with Angie Dickinson & Wilkes the other co-star that the movie could have been much better & should have had lots more western action in it. But alas it will be just another B western movie. Thank you
