Hold the Dark (2018)
Really good writing.
I won't recap the story. It's a chase story in the frozen north.
It's pace is slow, so millennials won't understand it.
It had at least 5 lines that made me sit up and say, "Cool! Good writing!"
You can see why they got the the talent together for this.
Some people don't like ambiguous endings or think that if the ending isn't clear that's a cliffhanger and hoping for a sequel. If there were to be a sequel it would have to be written and directed, and acted by all the same people. And that's only if the original story, which I have not read, called for it.
I will admit that Skarsgard and Wright, while acting their thermals off sometimes seemed to falter in their motivation in the scene.
I will also say that the symbolism IS vague. Is it a werewolf/skinwalker movie?
Is it an 'Alaskans are strange' movie?
Hmmmm....
Angie Tribeca (2016)
Scooby-doo meets Monty Python in The Office on an Airplane with a Naked Gun
The one review I read totally dissed the show so I'm writing my first ever review on IMDb. From the opening training sequence in episode 1 I realised it was going to be a spoof on police and crime show tropes and clichés while also pushing the satire to absurd levels. Correct! The actors really pull off some great deadpan delivery of crazy lines in crazy situations. It's almost non-stop in its references to other shows and movies and some I didn't get but many I did. I laughed out loud at least twice an episode and smiled and smirked consistently.
I couldn't stand Brooklyn 99 after a few episodes but I really got into this. It's more like those old Airplane spoofs and the Naked Gun movies in its commitment to the joke even to mystical and heroic levels.
Well done. Hope there are more.
Late Phases (2014)
Always looking for a good werewolf movie...
This is a better than average character movie. The Wolves are scary and/but not CGI. My favourites are the old Universal Wolfman, the Howling, and American Werewolf in Paris I did not ever like American werewolf in London, except for the initial scenes I don't rate that at all! Silver Bullet was OK; better than I'd remembered and about as good as the book. The the main thing is the hero, who is unlikeable yet still a hero. I like the use of older actors; is this a 'Coccoon' for the Werewolf fans? It was a little difficult placing the main actor as a retiree at first, but I eventually accepted it. Overall a good addition to the Were-canon. I want to see more from everyone involved.
