Sostiene Pereira (1995)
Balance and simplicity
This movie is fine work; all the elements are gently blended to create a detailed and candid portrait of a man who evolves and embraces a fight, despite his age.
Three - related - aspects unveil the elegance of the equilibrium among the basic elements of the movie: The well managed crescendo of Pereira's involvement in Montero Rossi's life, the delicate intersection between politics and literature, and the absence of commiseration for the lives of the protagonists.
If you enjoy the neo-realism, probably you will appreciate this movie too.
The Straight Story (1999)
A 73 year old man decides to undertake a journey with a mower to resume the relationship with his brother.
The movie unfolds at a slow pace: music, colors, and dialogues are monotonous during the entire movie. Despite a relatively interesting opening, the level of genuine tension that motivates the spectator to continue watching the movie is extremely low.
The idea of the director is to unveil a story of two brothers as far as the journey of the main character (one of the two brothers) develops but the degree of introspection is low and the gradual unfolding looses its meaning because it is very easy to detect the motives of the journey.
Overall, the movie is characterized by redundancy: the spectator understands from the very beginning that the main character's life is sad but every few minutes, a melancholic music fades in, accompanying the narration of a depressing situation of the past. After the third narration, those among the most cynical spectators may start smiling instead of feeling empathy.
I would not recommend this movie to those who appreciated Amores Perros, in the Name of the Father, and Diarios de una Motocicleta because they may be disappointed by the lack of rhythm.
