The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Crap in a Hat
If you liked the Grinch movie... go watch that again, because this was no where near as good a Seussian movie translation. Mike Myers' Cat is probably the most annoying character to "grace" the screen in recent times. His voice/accent is terrible and he laughs at his own jokes with an awful weasing sound, which is about the only laughing I heard at the theater. Not even the kids liked this one folks, and kids laugh at anything now. Save your money and go see Looney Tunes: Back in Action if you're really looking for a fun holiday family movie.
Super Mario Bros. (1993)
Boy was this a waste of film...
I cannot accurately describe how much of a disappointment this movie was to me. I am a huge Mario Bros. fan, but this movie is truly a dark spot in their history. While I did like the Mario Bros. costumes when they eventually got into them, the rest of the movie had little to nothing to do with the games and was very poorly done. The few things that were taken from the games are so twisted that they don't even resemble the character or place which they were based upon. The Mushroom Kingdom isn't a fantastic wonderland of bricks and strange mushroom houses, but a run down New York City filled with "Dinosaur People" who look just plain stupid. Toad is some tall hippie guy with bad hair cut, Yoshi is a 2 foot tall T-Rex, and Koopa is Dennis Hopper with too much hair jell. This movie makes the live action segments of Captain Lou Albano on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show look like Oscar winning material.... Well, almost. If you want good Mario Bros. then play the games, and as the tagline for this movie says, "This ain't no game."
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989)
A classic show, but an unworthy DVD.
I was really excited to hear that this DVD was coming out. I loved watching this show when I was younger and I eagerly awaited reliving those fond memories. Unfortunately, the DVD left me a little disappointed. While I understand the menus are aimed for little children, they are boring and quite annoying as Inspector Gadget talks throughout them. (Why is he there any ways?!) Each episode is intact, and that is enjoyable, but you don't get all of the live action stuff with Lou Albano as Mario, or get to hear the second version of the theme song which originally played before the cartoon segments. The bonus Legend of Zelda cartoons are a nice tough though. Overall, it's not a bad DVD, but there are some things that would have made it much better. I can only hope they release more, but not put together so hastily.
