Mies vailla menneisyyttä (2002)
Aki's best one (so far)
Do you remember the last time you went into the movie theater and just saw a brilliant and funny film? Despite the fact that the plot (as the title implies: a man, after being beaten up, has lost his memory) is to a certain degree well known, Aki Kaurismäki combined it with subtle humour and just shot a likeable film. The performances by Markku Peltola, Kati Outinen and the rest of Aki's non-varying cast are quite pleasant and enjoyable. Although I am used to Aki's idiosyncratic, deader-than-deadpan humour, I was very surprised by his latest release, since I thought "Drifting Clouds" would be his masterpiece. It proved wrong. Go, watch it! 10* (out of 10*)
Halbe Treppe (2002)
17 Hippies downstairs
I was not sure what sort of film I was going to watch, when I was entering the movie theater, but I liked Halbe Treppe, although it was VERY influenced by Scandinavian Dogma-releases and therefore very hyped in recent German press releases. The story itself is not that much complex: two couples, of the one the man and of the other the woman become unfaithful... But the gags in-between are terrific. There is this running gag on the 17 hippies playing music in front of the snack box, or the other one concerning Britney Spears, whose music is always running in the background, when scenes were shot at the local radio station. Many devices of the Dogma manifesto were used in this film: no artificial setting, laymen-acting, hand camera a.s.o., but the splendour of a "Idioterne" (Lars von Trier, 1998) or "Festen" (Thomas Vinterberg, 1998) is not achieved. Nevertheless, I liked the movie and was surprised, since most recent German releases bored me a lot. 8* (out of 10*)
Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)
Hm...the action genre...always interesting.
Well folks, I know I am late watching this movie, since it had been released two years ago... I am not sure if I have understood the plot, because of the many questions it left unanswered, but I reckon the script was just "not that much inventive"? It was about a grand theft auto, a brother-brother-relationship, a mother - elder son - younger son-relationship, a cop-thug-relationship and an ex-girlfriend-still-interested-Nicholas Cage-relationship. Confused? Me, too. I know, we're talking about Hollywood movies. I know that the script can be quesionable, if the action is okay. I know... But what were all those pseudo-relationships about? I enjoyed watching the cars, but I can do this every day at the car dealer's, so why wasting 2 hours for a film like this? Nevertheless, the action scenes, though not that innovative, were okay. 2* (out of 10*)
Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth (2000)
Shriek, If a film like this will have a sequel!
Oh man, that was one of the worst films I've seen in my life! Lame jokes, miserable actors and a more than just questionable script. Would somebody please shoot a spoof on horror-pardodies? I think the time has come... Surprisingly that Beverly Hills actress was in it. Thought she was working on her...hm..."career". Because of her: 1/2 (out of 10)
