Big Game (2014)
Big Game is a big dumb, cheesy, 80's action flick and that's why it works. It never takes itself too seriously and has a lot of fun along the way. Recommended.
"You've gotta cock it, mother******."
Well, at least Sam L. Jackson got to say 'mother******' in this surprisingly fresh PG-13 action adventure so that's a good start. The plot of Big Game reminded me of a big, dumb, cheesy, 80's action flick which was something I enjoyed, because of how well executed the film was. Despite some super cliché scenes/dialogue, Big Game mostly works. It was better than I expected and although, it's not as good as Jalmari Helander's previous effort Rare Exports, BG delivers on it's B-movie premise with a blockbuster amount of grandeur. Jackson obviously knocks it out of the park (The man is an amazing character actor) but the best part of the movie is definitely Onni Tommila. This kid is a bad-ass and he owned his role as Oskari. I loved Onni in Big Game and Rare Exports. Ray Stevenson as the villain was an okay choice but his performance was pretty wooden which didn't help his case. Even though I prefer Rare Exports over his second effort, Big Game is still such a breath of fresh air compared to most of the films I've seen this year. It's super fun and I had a wicked time throughout. Recommended.
Contracted (2013)
Contracted: An Indie Body Horror Opus
'Not your average one night stand'.
They've got that completely right. 'Contracted' is the latest feature from Eric England, the director of 2011's 'Madison County'. This is a truly disgusting body horror opus. Did it make my skin crawl? Yeah. But does that mean it's a good film? Not necessarily.
If you consider gore scary, you'll be freaked out. Hands down. I, on the other hand, was among the majority of film-goers. Grossed out but infuriated. One might ask, "Why were you infuriated?" The characters were completely irrational and unrealistic. It was a total turn-off from the film and it's interesting concept. Eric England could have taken this film into such disturbing heights with what Samantha was contracted with but instead, the film overstayed its welcome in a boring place. If the characters were more realistic, the film would have probably been much better.
The effects in the film are really well done, however. Also, I enjoyed the ending and Najarra Townsend's acting was definitely a plus. Her transformation in character was truly a shocking performance.
If you're into body horror and gross-out flicks, then Contracted is for you. If you're looking for a good plot with smart characters, look elsewhere.
