To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
Watch the Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert instead
I'm amazed anyone says anything good about this movie. It will always be on my list of movies not just to walk out on, but run...and run fast to your nearest video rental store and get yourself a copy of the Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. After you watch that, you'll realize what a lame Americanized Hollywood rip-off To Wong Foo really is.
Jackass: The Movie (2002)
utter waste
Reading the trivia listings for this movie, it makes me sad that an all expense paid trip to such a wonderful country was provided to someone just because of his ignorance.
I wonder if these guys will ever get the bright idea to do their own snuff movie.
The Haunted Mansion (2003)
Check your pulse at the end of this movie....
A few cool special effects don't make a good movie. I'm glad I didn't sneeze during the film and blow a hole through the tissue-thin plot.
Poor Terence Stamp. He's such a great actor and this is the kind of crap he's getting offered?
I'm not particularly a fan of Eddie Murphy, but I felt sorry for him, as well. Even the couple of times he could have been funny, you felt as if he were afraid to let go because he was in a family movie. His performance was dreadful.
I won't go into a windy description of the story, what little there was, and give a "spoilers ahead" warning. The spoiler would be having to see this movie in the first place. Don't waste your money even on the rental.
It's really a shame Disney bastardized their beloved theme park attraction with this drivel. You can be certain Mr. Eisner won't take credit for this one, even if he did have anything to do with greenlighting it, in his next pseudo-biography of egomaniacal lies.
Do yourself a big favor and shun this film at all cost.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Great fun.
There's no need to go on and on about this movie. It's lighthearted, thanks to Johnny Depp and the occasional nod to the Disney theme park attraction which inspired it, and it's the sort of movie you have in mind when you think of seeing a good, fun pirate/adventure movie. If you want to see some Academy Award winning film with the requisite brave character who dies from some terrible misunderstood malady, don't waste your time with this movie. If you want to have some fun, a few laughs, and a reminder of good, old-fashioned Saturday matinee popcorn adventure then go see this. Even better, go get Disney's "Treasure Island" classic and watch it before you see "Pirates of the Caribbean"---really get yourself in the mood.
Santa's Workshop (1932)
availability
Delightful Silly Symphony cartoon. Does anyone out there know if this is available on dvd?
It's not mentioned on the case, but the "sequel" to this cartoon ("the Night Before Christmas") is a bonus feature on the recently released dvd of "the Santa Clause". In order to see the cartoon, you have to play a very simple game involving dropping presents from your Santa sleigh and dodging buildings/flocks of birds. I was wondering if "Santa's Workshop" might be available also in this manner.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Get over it already
Dreadfully dull. Yeah, I was swept up by the Star Wars hype when the original movie was released. I was just a kid. I grew up. Yeah, Star Wars is a fun movie, but the plot is paper thin and that dialogue---yikes! With each subsequent continuation of the story, I was caught up in the hype. Still a kid, mind you. What happened? Well, I grew up. Saw the movies again, took them for what they are...good old fashioned entertainment. I'm not surprised at how hooked people are on this series. They are fun. Kool-Aid was pretty tasty when I was a kid, too.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
Entertaining diversion
Basic tv fodder in terms of any plot. However, the movie has wonderfully, rich characters. Cusack is dependable as always. Spacey is fine, though the mustache and accent are questionable. For its minor faults, the movie is still fun to sit back and relax to with its delightful characters, atmosphere, and music.
