CGI Extravaganza and then...

Warning: Spoilers
OK. I finally saw the much-hyped Avatar. Currently has an IMDb rating of 8.6. Really?!?! 8.6?!?! Yes, the special effects are cool, but without the effects, this is barely watchable. The story is truly predictable. Once you see how they can turn a human into one of their own, you know how the movie will end, even though you have a feeling about it 20 minutes in, anyway. All the machines and ships look like things from other movies or TV shows, like Aliens, Robotech, and Star Trek. James Horner does the music and it sounds like a mish-mash of a bunch of his other scores (especially Star Trek ones he did). I had left the room a few times for bathroom breaks and whatnot and did not miss a thing. Also, I would not let a little kid watch this movie. There is plenty of violence where people get skewered and blown up.

Good, but...

Warning: Spoilers
If you watch the trailer, you may expect a non-stop, roller coaster, girl-power, action thrill ride. Don't be fooled. While the movie itself is fun to watch and is a good distraction, it is not by any means a white-knuckle ride. There are exciting parts, but really it is the story of 4 troubled teens from different walks of life and their dealing with a tumultuous three days. The heist that is supposedly the center of the movie, is rather a sideline to the screwed up few days the girls go through. Weird appearances by Kevin Smith, Eve, and Mandy Patinkin.

Overall, it is fun to watch, but you can't take it too seriously. Will it change your life? No. Is it worth an afternoon distraction? Yes.
