The Fighter (2010)
Best of Bale
I had never seen Bale in such capturing character. and he completely overshadow wahlberg. Amy Adams, for a change, owned Charlene fiercely. gone is the princess or the writer turn blogger role. Charlene is tough, strong and the right kind of woman to stand behind the kind of character wahlberg was playing; one that easily weaken at the push of the family. yes, he fight back but the bond with the brother was too strong. Adding to the wound, was the still-effective method taught the brother, that brought him to winning the match. it was a mesmerizing story; again bale conquer the entire movie easily. the best of Bale for me. ever.
The Kids Are All Right (2010)
Not Bad, Not Good Either
As another person living the same sex committed relationship, it is of high interest to have a look at the depiction of a same sex family. with kids! my, i myself will not ever get to that point in my life. moving on.
as other reviews have said, the spread of casts are truly a killer one. Annette Bening as Nic was fabulous, so was Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore. But the storyline was so typical, and it basically sent out the message that lesbians would somehow make that cross to men, and will always go back to physical gratification of the hetero-sex. which is not accurate, not for all at least.
the characters of the kids, despite being the ones who invited the 'father' into their lives, was not further developed to explore their true feelings or acceptance to the new addition of the 'family'.
the unnecessary scenes of laser and the friend sent no clear message of what they were trying to say. was it about 'the effect of not having a male figure'?
the institution itself, was nicely portrayed. what could be seen as abnormal (and wrong) was easily put together and as a family, there was nothing WRONG with having two moms and a big house.
so no, the movie was not bad neither was it good enough to be praised more that it has gotten.
The Reader (2008)
Spell-binding, morally that is
I found the chance to watch this movie a year too late. But upon finishing it, my mind was filled with many thoughts. i may not have understood the movie fully but the issues brought center was powerful. to view a person's mind that is far from whats in front of her eyes, contradicting the typical action of a human..amazingly portrayed. i was stunned watching the trial scene - when hanna said the guards were responsible for the prisoners thus letting them out would create chaos and its their job to keep the prisoners in order, even if it means having the prisoners burnt alive inside a locked church. what does that say abt us? to me it means, the level of empathy we could have for a person could be challenging. the different picture in every human's mind is so broad-ranging, influenced by the different named and un-named factors all around us. and none is to be judged by others, but one's self.
Anak Halal (2007)
Best... not!
This is one malay movie i was too angry to watch, had i not paid rm10 for it, i would have walked out of the theater 10 minutes after it began.
Farid Kamil is by now, already typically known to be starring in movies such as this one. Weak storyline and continuity, bad cinematography, bad script and bad acting by all of the cast. Maya Karin was being her usual not-so-good-at-acting, Fasha Sandha..(loud sigh) was a huge disappointment. Rosyam Noor probably shouldn't have agreed to be in this movie for it merely downgrade his credibility as one fine actor.
I have seen Osman Ali's work before and it disappoints me that it has to come to such a bad result. The title is catchy enough, the cast could and did attract moviegoers i suppose but there is nothing to be proud abt when it comes to the message the movie was trying to convey.
Recall Remp-It and you'd know what i mean.
