Gunsmoke: Old Fool (1960)
Was Kitty drunk?
I just caught some of this episode today...I had seen it before. A few years ago I saw an episode where Amanda Blake appeared to be drunk while saying her lines. Every time I watch an episode I wonder if this will be the one. I just saw part of the scene today where Kitty is talking with Doc, and I think this is the scene. I got the distinct feeling that she was kind of drunk, and slurring her words a bit. Anyone else notice this? In many episodes Kitty swigs down beer with Matt, Chester, and Doc. And it looks like real beer. Another thing...how did they keep the beer cold back then? In the cellar?
The Angel Levine (1970)
A Crushing Ending
In the original story Morris finally tells the angel that he believes in him. Levine gets his wings, and the miracle occurs. Morris goes home and finds Fanny puttering around with a dust mop, obviously feeling better. Why the movie ends in desperation, I just don't know. I'm not sure how the addition of Levine's girlfriend improves the storyline. It's kind of pointless. This could have been such a feel-good movie. Like It's a Wonderful Life, we could have been crying happy tears at the end. I can just imagine the last scene...Morris sitting in his chair, reading his newspaper, and Fanny happily cooking in the kitchen.
Backfire (1950)
What's wrong with the soundtrack?
I have suffered through this movie a few times, and cannot figure out why the soundtrack is so messed up. From the opening credits on, there are two different tunes playing at the same time. The most egregious example is when the singer in the nightclub (Viveca Lindfors) is singing in a foreign language. You can't hear any of it because some other background melody is blaring in another key. When it was featured on Noir Alley on TCM, the host never mentioned or even noticed it. What is going on? I can't get through on the TCM website. This is a glitch of the highest order. I have a degree in music, but you don't have to have a trained ear to notice that two different melodies are playing at the same time throughout the whole movie.
