I Am Lisa (2020)
7/10
Kristen Vaganos Is wonderful as Lisa
1 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I AM LISA is an enjoyable take on the werewolf genre. You have the heroine who tries to understand what is happening to her - especially as she begins killing the villains. The main villain, Sheriff Deborah Huckins, played by Manon Halliburton, is as evil as they come. Personally, I think she should have suffered more at the end, that's how well Manon Halliburton plays evil.

Jennifer Seward as Sam, Lisa's best friend, plays her role believably, which must be hard to do when your friend is a werewolf.

One issue I had was that it was obvious what order the villains would be killed - least villainy (is that a word?) to most. But it was still fun to watch the revenge kills.

I liked it and I'm not Lisa.

The homophobia seeps from its core
27 January 2024
Did Candace Cameron Bure really say, "Thank God you won't see any gay characters in this film - or any other GAC film. They make me barf and I'm so gorgeous lesbians will always hit on me."

I'm generally not put off by films with a religious message, but knowing how homophobic Candace it was just hard to watch. Her views on only having "traditional" marriage on GAC are just disgusting.

I'll stick with HALLMARK movies (I can't believe I just typed that), they don't stink of intolerance and hate. Unfortunately Candace has fully embraced the bigots in this country and apparently there's a market for that.

Screwballs (1983)
8/10
Raunchy retro 80's comedy
28 November 2023
"Screwballs" is a retro comedy that unabashedly embraces its 1980s roots, delivering a riotously entertaining and unapologetically raunchy cinematic experience. Directed by Rafal Zielinski, the film is a classic example of the teen sex comedy genre, and it thrives on its outrageous humor and irreverent spirit.

The plot, centered around a group of high school misfits on a quest for sexual escapades, may not be groundbreaking, but "Screwballs" distinguishes itself through its over-the-top gags and shamelessly cheeky humor. The ensemble cast's energetic performances contribute to the film's infectious sense of fun, with each character adding a unique and memorable flavor to the mix.

Zielinski's direction embraces the excesses of the genre, using slapstick comedy, absurd situations, and double entendre to keep the audience laughing. The film's pacing is quick, ensuring that the humor remains relentless throughout, and the clever use of visual gags adds an extra layer of amusement.

While "Screwballs" may not be for everyone due to its explicit content and dated sensibilities, those who appreciate the genre will find it to be a nostalgic and uproarious trip down memory lane. The film doesn't take itself seriously, and that's precisely where its charm lies. It's a throwback to a time when teen comedies pushed boundaries, and "Screwballs" does so with gleeful abandon, making it a guilty pleasure that delivers on its promise of pure, unfiltered hilarity.
