Seven Pounds (2008)
7/10
If you like crying, you'll love this film.
20 December 2008
I gave this a 7/10 because for a tear-jerker, it is very well done. You are left in suspense/confusion for about half the movie while you are trying to figure out just what is going on. The story was engaging and emotionally gripping. This movie made my wife cry hard. Oh course I can't cry because I'm a man. :) Personally, I would never watch this a second time, but I have to admit that the direction was superb, Will Smith did a pretty good job, and Rosario Dawson was really really good. I think it's the first time she's really shown some acting talent. Nothing too deep or profound in this one, but if you want a good cry, check it out.

Watch Planet Terror, then walk out before Death Proof
10 April 2007
Loved Rodriguez's Planet Terror, but hated Tarantino's pile of crap. Tarantino has somehow gotten under the delusion that his dialog is so great that he can make us watch a 100 minutes of it. I think I'll call this Kevin-Smith-itis.

I'd recommend leaving during the opening credits of Death Proof.

Planet Terror, on the other hand, was brilliant. I'm not sure I liked the scratches etc. on the print, but I can appreciate the effect of it. Planet Terror was the best comedic gorefest I've ever seen. Definitely the best movie of the year so far.

Planet Terror

is

Naked Weapon (2002)
Sexy women, brutal action, and a good story. It doesn't get any better.

Babes killing with their bare hands after seducing a guy; what a great premise. I highly recommend this one to anyone that doesn't have an aversion to violence. And if you're worried that movie only offers sex, you're wrong. Actually, I think there are only a couple scenes that actually have nudity. What you get is to see very attractive women learn how to kill, practice killing, and then kill some more. Furthermore, the situations that are presented are especially memorable. The fights are also well done and they are just on the edge of believability. As for the story, this film was constantly surprising me-every time I thought I knew what would happen next, I was wrong! This movie has hot women, brutal violence and an unpredictable and engaging story. This is the best film I have seen this year.

A treasure!

Japan is bizarre and different than America. Really? I had no idea! Japan different then America? You mean they don't speak English! That's hilarious! Oh, and do you know they have restaurants where you have to cook your own food? That's crazy! I must say that watching two bored people chat about nothing has never been brought the big screen with such fidelity before. I mean, it was just like real life! You know, when you are in the grocery store and the line is long, and the person behind you says something like `it looks like everyone waited ‘till the last minute to prepare for thanksgiving dinner eh?' and you say `yeah, it sure is busy in here', and they say `yeah, I can't believe it'? Well, if you've never experienced that kind of witty banter, then you're in for a real treat with Lost in Translation. Coppola expertly captures those moments of real life and translates them to film with brilliant realism. This film gives you the benefit of a whole weeks' worth of pointless chat with strangers in under 2 hours! I can't wait for the sequel.

Secretary (2002)
A wonderful love story.
15 October 2003
This movie was so cool. It didn't warrant the 18A rating that it got so don't rent it for cheap thrills. It did however have a fascinating protagonist and a great story. In my opinion Spader (a great actor) is really outdone by Maggie Gillyhaal. Her performance is one of the best I've seen recently. The movie isn't that funny or sexy, but it has an engaging story and interesting characters. I wasn't bored for a minute.

The Rundown (2003)
Pretty good, The Rock's career is on the rise
30 September 2003
Most of the humour is definitely for kids (i.e. 12 and under) but the action was great. The Rock really kicks ass and the hits look very painful. It was a great touch that the Rock hated using guns because `bad things happen to people' when he does. Sean William Scott was funny - as usual. I'd give it about 7/10.

Adaptation. (2002)
Adaptation is so, so, so bad - here's why.
24 September 2003
I loved Being John Malkovich, but I hated this movie. On the surface it is just 2 hours of rambling from this really annoying character who hates himself. An average scene in the movie has him standing or sitting saying `I'm fat, I'm ugly, I'm stupid, and I'm fat and I'm stupid, and I keep sweating, ..' FOREVER. But when you think about the movie more deeply, it is even worse.

It is pathetic to make a movie about a guy that wants to make a movie. This is what idiots do when they try to write something for weeks and then say `Hey, I'm going to write about a guy like me, that sucks and can't think of an idea - people will love that!'. To make matters worse, not only in the main character trying to make a movie, he can't do it. Why? Because he's fat, stupid, etc. etc. etc. Sound exciting? It gets better..

There is another story in this movie. It is about a woman who has no passion. So we get a change of pace with this story. Instead of hearing `I'm fat, I'm stupid' we hear `why don't I feel passion like the flower guy? I wish I could feel passionate. Oh, my life sucks.' Now the movie is called Adaptation, so she adapts to this problem by getting stoned and staring at her feet. And, the film builds to a climax when she makes a dial tone by humming simultaneously with another person. This was definitely the highlight of the film.

Now wait, it turns out that the woman IS passionate about something after all: her reputation. You see her first response to someone finding dirt on her is: KILL HIM! Oh yes, let's shoot him because he saw me having sex! I am in awe of this brilliant plot twist.

After that, the movie continued to become more and more stupid until end.

Now, for those that think I didn't understand the film: think again. I get that the film was adapting to what's popular which means that the narrator was changing to become like this brother, blah blah blah. But it was lame. Really, really lame.
