And Then I Go (2017)
Wasted Opportunity
This should have been a 'boy' version of "Eighth Grade," the wonderful little film by Bo Burnham from earlier this year (2018). And that's what the first half of the film felt like.
Instead, we ended up with your typical run-of-the-mill school shooting movie, which we've already seen with "Elephant" and "Zero Day," among others.
It's really a shame because the lead actor who plays Edwin, a young man by the name of Arman Darbo, gives an AMAZING performance that would be Oscar nomination worthy in a better movie. It sincerely felt like I was watching a young Leonardo DiCaprio, as cliche as that feels to type.
The character of Edwin deserved a better storyline than being a hesitant participant in a school shooting. The depression, anxiety, and isolation of Edwin (with such a realistic portrayal) was an interesting tale to watch on its own that it just didn't need such a senseless, melodramatic plot device to carry the film.
Oh, and the ending sucked too. Just awful.
Last Thirteen (2016)
Highly Impressive & Entertaining Documentary
This film is a very dark look into the life of a middle-aged man who is obsessed with the wonderfully entertaining internet show "Kermit and Friends" and specifically its host, Elisa Jordana.
Having been banned from the website that airs the show for saying a derogatory term while on air, his life goes on a downward spiral and he documents as much as he can of it via Periscope and other social media platforms. Is his behavior in the documentation sincere, or is it a ploy to get attention and sympathy from Elisa and the fans of Kermit and Friends? That is for you, the viewer, to decide.
No matter your conclusion, you will be thoroughly entertained throughout all 2 hours of this mesmerizing film. Shot in just a span of a few days, the director (Seederman) and editor (Douche) do a superb job piecing together Chris' footage to show you his journey during the days leading up to Christmas of 2015.
Moreover, the film features tremendous music from Elisa Jordana and also from the brilliant band, The Stroll, whose extremely talented lead singer, Jason Deeh Pitre, is also apart of the Kermit and Friends universe. I promise you will not see a movie this year with a better soundtrack.
All in all, I could not recommend this beautiful piece of art enough. You'll laugh, you'll feel sadness, you'll get angry, you'll question everything... simply, it's a movie that will block out the shitty things going on in your life for a couple hours while you focus on Chris Dick's bizarre holiday season in Seattle.
