Doctor Who: Blink (2007)
Top ten of all episodes
This episode was David Tennant's defining moment as the Doctor. He nails being mysterious, funny, eccentric, and brilliant all at the same time. It is amazing that they squeezed all of the best elements of the series into one, one-part episode. "Blink" Includes: the confusing elements of time travel, a bittersweet love story, new nightmare-quality adversaries, the potential for new story lines, the Doctor's quirky personality... everything! I loved the DVD/transcript sequence, as it plays with our brains the way the show is supposed to. The concept of the angels is completely new - they combine sinister, creepy, and vicious perfectly. I would go as far as to say - if you want to introduce Doctor Who to a friend who has never seen an episode... start them with this one.
Doctor Who: The Angels Take Manhattan (2012)
Felt like the writers were bored
I think back to the last appearance of Rose - her departure was just one part of a larger, nearly epic, story line. Several things came together, several possible story lines opened up, some "what if's" were addressed... it was generally very well done.
With this departure... I envision the writers sitting in a room, having this conversation: "I'm bored with Rory and Amy... time to end it." "How?" "I don't know... something in the US... with angels." (yawn) "Sounds good."
It gave me nothing new to look forward to, no good "OMG" moments, and the way the Doctor explained not being able to see the Ponds again seemed forced. It wasn't necessarily "bad," just average.
Straw Dogs (2011)
Never saw original, but remake was... OK.
My single biggest problem with this movie was the main character's personality - half the time, he was being an arrogant city boy who was understandably disliked by the locals... the other half of the time he was going out of his way to fit in.
I also disliked the way they portrayed the ex-boyfriend. It seems like they tried to make him the most likable of the bad guys, but then he raped the wife.
The overall story seemed like an un-necessarily long leed in to a few minutes of action at the end.
6 of 10.
Ninja Cheerleaders (2008)
Really, it is as bad as you think it would be.
Yes, it is exactly the quality of film one would expect with that title. Neither even the (very brief) flesh factor nor the 'cheese' factor save this thing. It is a crime that this has not yet made the IMDb bottom 100. I am seriously sitting here trying to think of something positive to say... anything... nope, nothing. George Tekai must be seriously hurting for work. From a critical standpoint - the acting is bad. The direction is seemingly non-existent. I don't think I can really address the writing/script as I honestly think they just sort of made things up as they went along. I'll be honest here... I (like many people) watched this thing to see some cheap flesh--HERE'S THE SPOILER PART--The three main characters are never even seen topless. There are occasional pointless glimpses of a dancer between scenes, and a couple of women near the end at the announcement of the winners of the 'talent contest'. Seriously, watch 'Gigli' or 'Glitter' before resorting to this.
