Scrooge (1951)
My favorite holiday movie BUT
The Sim Christmas Carol is the only one I ever watch. I've tried watching others but rarely ever get to the end of them. When I read the book, Alistair Sim is about as close as anyone could get to what I envisioned Scrooge would look like. And his acting? Chef's kiss. Every single actor was brilliantly cast.
BUT, I do have one "burning" question...why, when Scrooge gets home after getting a bite to eat, seeing Marley in the door knocker, and going inside, is there an ALREADY lit candle on the table at the base of the stairs? This has bothered me every time I've watched...and I've watched A LOT.
Love this movie anyway.
Mank (2020)
Reminder from the 2020 election season
While I liked the B&W filming and the homage to old Hollywood film making, the movie was so-so. On the other hand, the dialog dealing with anti-Upton Sinclair propaganda films couldn't have been timed any better. After all, if you repeat a lie often enough, it is still just a repeated lie.
Pieces of a Woman (2020)
Trite ending to an otherwise pretty good movie
Why does a woman have to have a child in order for life to go on in a positive way? Trite and lousy ending (whether a dream or in Martha's future) which was a big disappointment...as was not seeing any interaction though Sean returns for the trial.
Jack Frost (1998)
Still elicits a few tears
Twenty-two years later and I still get misty during the last cabin scene. So many panned this movie, but it is on my forever mandatory Christmas watch list.
Star 80 (1983)
Lost Time
Watched it when I was too young to critique it but still thought it was pretty lousy. Just saw it again today. It was worse than I remembered. Fosse. Overrated.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Should have stopped after 1st season
I was very supportive of the show from the beginning...until about halfway through season two. From that point on, it was a study in decline. How unfortunate to have wasted all the potential.
Good Morning, Miss Dove (1955)
Couldn't keep watching
It's like watching a really bad middle school play with worse middle school actors. Too slow and too dull to keep watching. I got as far as "Boy, am I paying my debt to society." That was plenty.
The Night Of (2016)
A remake of Criminal Justice
While this is pretty much an exact duplication of Criminal Justice, 2008, the characters are much more believable.
The Lost City of Z (2016)
Missed opportunity
I'm a major Charlie Hunnam fan, but if he spoke any slower, I would think the movie was glitching. There were several scenes and historical facts of interest. So little was made of the coincidental timing of other expeditions in South America and around the world. Nothing was made of the Spanish supposedly understood by the indigenous people. Nothing was made of the first "Indian" who left the party unbeknownst to the explorers. The movie had so much more potential that what it delivered.
Inside I'm Dancing (2004)
James McAvoy as Rory O'Shea
The chemistry of this cast is perfect. Kudos to the casting director.
I saw the film because of flipping through the channels and landing on free movies on cable. I must have watched it a half dozen times those first few days. Congratulations to the writer and director. Then I had to buy it. I still watch it. It is intense, funny and moving!
I saw where Romola Garai won an award and James McAvoy was nominated. James McAvoy should have been nominated for AND won so many awards for his portrayal of Rory O'Shea. He was, to put it simply, brilliant. His performance was smooth and pointed, flawless and flawed, humorous and devastating. Do you enjoy movies where you laugh and cry? This is your film.
