Poker Kings (2004)
Interesting Behind-The-Scene Look
This is not an extraordinarily exciting documentary about a few poker players but it is interesting. In particular, the chronicles of English players Simon Trumper and Gary Bush show the downside of the professional poker life. The Robert Varkoni segment shows how an every-man can rise to the top of the poker world. This has been further proved by the recent World Series of Poker victories of Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker. Phil Hellmuth comes off the same way as he does every time a microphone is put in his face: like a complete jerk, family man or not. Anyone with even a passing interest in becoming a professional poker player should check this documentary out.
Do You Have a Licence to Save This Planet? (2001)
Not The Worst "Who"-Related Project
This was actually a rather amusing tale from the group that has kept many Doctor Who actors and actresses working since the cancellation of the series many years ago. Entertaining and even hilarious sometimes, it's a must for any Doctor Who fan.
C.O.P.S. (1988)
Glory From My Youth
I remember watching C.O.P.S. and buying the toys and all that jazz. It was great! Very entertaining and interesting, a cops show designed for the Saturday morning set. I even remember friends debating a scene where they catch a criminal and he begins to cry, one friend wonders why and the other goes on about the conditions of living in prison. See this was my childhood OZ!
The Gambler (1974)
Like a Car Wreck You Cannot Look Away From
"The Gambler" is a movie with no real redeeming moral tone to it. How can we possibly root for the main character, played with total vigor by James Caan? He selfishly manipulates his mother and girlfriend and places a higher value on getting bets on basketball games in than on personal relationships. But somehow we see the worst of each of us in him, the self-destructive side. We all have some vice and we know it's wrong and we know why it's wrong but we continue to hold onto it. You can't look away from this film but it will make you cringe.
Brazil (1985)
Orwell + Monty Python = Brazil YAY!
Brazil is one of those creatures you either love or hate and I'm proud to be a lover. Just remove yourself from the world and allow your mind to wander, you won't get everything about the movie but you can get enough to enjoy it. I recommend the Criterion Collection three-DVD set that includes all sorts of background info and The Battle of Brazil documentary about the struggle between director Gilliam and the studio to get this puppy released.
