Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Not bad
I'm a fan of Alex O'Loughlin's so i made sure to catch this one (even though i'm already inundated with procedural cop shows!), but was pleasantly surprised to see how well this worked.
I'm a little too young for the original, but this remake has some promising features. The action is believable, has good pacing, and the character development in the first episode seemed pretty good.
The dialogue was clichéd in some parts, but the interactions between Danny and Steve are amusing and really works well in allowing the viewer to warm to the characters.
I'm giving it an 8 out of 10 rating for the pilot alone, so hopefully the season maintains this level of quality! I also got a kick out of seeing Norman Reedus, Will Yun Lee (lol the accent) and SPIKE! *ahem* James Marsters making guest appearances :)
Chase (2010)
Average
I'm a sucker for cop shows so its no surprise this showed up on my radar for the new season. Unfortunately, i am a little disappointed.
The show itself is a little too formulaic; the badass female cop with a ~*super secret dark past*~ and Daddy issues, the new kid who's more square than Spongebob, etc., but it is only the first episode. Hopefully it will pick up over the season and it won't just end up being "another boring cop show".
The lead female scowls a little too much for my liking, but i'm glad to see Amaury Nolasco every week :D I'll definitely watch the next few episodes, but i won't be devastated if i happen to miss it one week.
Wasted on the Young (2010)
Powerful and provocative social commentary. A jewel in the Aussie film crown.
I was given the opportunity to watch this film as a part of a special screening and focus group session. I didn't read up on the plot beforehand, but was given the general gist of it by my cousin, who somehow managed to turn it into Swimfan #2. Thankfully, he had no idea what he was on about. This film is anything but an ostentatious Hollywood slasher, and is every bit an indication of top-quality Australian cinema.
I don't usually give films 10/10 ratings as i am extremely picky about whose praises i sing, but this one went above and beyond any expectations i had. The opening sequence reeled me in hook, line and sinker; and i was mesmerised until well after the credits began to roll.
The cinematography is incredible. The production values seemed very high (whether this is the case or not, i am unsure) and there are some expertly filmed and executed scenes. The use of special effects to signal dream sequences and the omission of kitschy fogged lenses during flashbacks (colour saturation was changed instead) make this a visually stunning film.
The soundtrack also plays into the script exceedingly well, swelling into an overbearing presence during scenes to build tension and confusion, and being understated in others which develops a foreboding atmosphere.
The storyline reads like a clichéd teen flick that one expects will try too hard and not hit the mark, but the script development, along the performances of Alex Russell, Oliver Ackland, TJ Power and Adelaide Clemens ensures that this film achieves its purpose. It doesn't just tell a story, it involves you in the story and it leaves you questioning not only the villains doing wrong, but the heroes and their idea of "right". The film does an incredible job highlighting the incidence of school bullying and the environment that it occurs in as well as commenting on youth culture in general.
Although the film is set in an Australian high school, and based on final year students (~17/18 years of age), i fear many individuals in the target audience might miss out on the chance to watch this brilliant film; either through choice or lack of exposure. I feel this film would be incredibly useful if included in high school English curriculum as it would allow the teens it is aimed at a chance to watch the film, but also walk through all the issues and themes it raises.
This is, in short, a brilliant film. It ticked all the boxes for me and i strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys powerful, provocative and intelligent films.
Pool ha-woo-seu (2004)
oh the cute, how it hurts my face
I'm only a third of the way through this series, but i can't help but comment, for i simply CANNOT get over how undeniably lovable this drama is.
I'm not the type of person who watches romance dramas as they just don't interest me, but i went against my better judgement simply because i'd heard all my friends raving about this show. And wow, was i ever impressed.
The story is essentially simple in its premise but has been made interesting by adding a mix of wit, slapstick humour and a great cast. I am not particularly a Rain fan and have never seen Song Hye-Kyo in anything previous to watching this show, but i was greatly impressed with their acting and the chemistry they shared.
I found myself from being completely non-plussed by the whole drama to start off with, to constantly giggling and squeeing at the television; a reaction that has rarely happened in all the years i've been watching TV dramas.
The only thing holding me back from giving it a 10/10 is the horrid wardrobe Yeong-Jae sports. I can't remember how many times i balked at the screen because he walked into the scene wearing yet another low-cut, cleavage revealing top and ridiculously mismatched pants, but i'm sure i would have made myself thoroughly hammered if i'd made a drinking game out of it ;D
Rain's man cleavage aside, this is a wonderful drama to watch; i'd definitely recommend it :)
A Wrinkle in Time (2003)
Failed to reach my expectations, but enjoyable movie...
I had heard a lot about how amazing the book was, so i had quite high expectations for the movie.
Many times throughout the movie (it was shown in Australia as a one part movie rather than a mini-series) i found myself either bored with the dialogue or with the way the characters were delivered. Granted, the performances from Kate Nelligan, Alfre Woodard and David Dorman were brilliant, but i was disappointed with the performance that Katie Stuart put in. It seemed that her character was forced and failed to envoke any emotion in which i sympathised with her character.
The look of the movie; the set design, character wardrobe and special effects; were surprisingly good, especially for a mini-series and i was pleased with the use of colour in the alternate universes (their names elude me at the moment). And what was with the government agents? I found that plot element extremely strange, out of place and distracting to the main storyline.
Overall the movie was enjoyable but some points dragged it down. I wouldn't say it was a roaring success but i also wouldn't say it was a complete waste of time.
I give it 6 1/2 out of 10
