Storage 24 (2012)
Do not bother with this film
We went to see the film with reasonable expectations and we were let down BADLY! The idea had promise but the delivery was terrible. No one in the film could act - apart from the mad guy who lived in the storage unit.
One of the actresses who played Shelly, showed no emotion what so ever even when she was literally face-to-face with the monster. Her face was constantly in the same pose - that of an ape with chronic Bell's Palsy! The storyline was weak and the scenery unchanging and consisted of two corridors throughout the film.
It did have a couple of moments that made you jump, but that was it. It did though have an interesting twist in the very- and I do mean very - last 8 seconds of the film.
If you really want to see this then rent it on DVD; don't bother seeing it at the cinema, save your cash.
Noel Clark - you can do better!
Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
Cheesy gore-fest, in the best possible taste.
This film is a cheesy bloodbath with massively over the top characters and some toe curling lines. Do you remember some films from the 80's that were so cheesy that they went into the opposite end of the spectrum and became brilliant? Well this is one of those films. It is filmed in a very much 80's style, it is not a cheesy because it's poor in quality, it is intentionally this way. The whole town is filled to the brim with over the top, deranged and completely outrageous characters.
Some of the scenes in the film will both shock you to the core and make laugh out loud at the complete absurdity of it all. For instance there's one scene where the heroine hooker (can't remember the names) gets the bottom half of her arm cut off with a lawnmower the proceeds to utilise the protruding bone of said partial amputation to pry open a sewer manhole to rescue the 'Hobo', brilliant.
Don't expect to be left in a state of contemplation or have you mind stretched with this one. If you enjoy watching 80's movies or that style of movie then give this a go, you will not be disappointed.
Definitely worth a watch.
Prometheus (2012)
A film for the thinking man/woman
If you watch this movie with the expectation of having everything handed to you on a plate then of course you will not enjoy it. This film requires some intelligence on the part of the viewer.
People complain about holes in the story such as the 'Engineers' created us then tried to destroy us for no reason. If you put just a little thought into this you will see that the 'Engineers' had created several different lifeforms which in themselves are organic weapons i.e. Aliens. Obviously Human Beings are quite different to the merciless Aliens in the fact that we have a higher degree of intelligence with an instinct to understand the world around us and pursue peaceful resolutions rather than killing all who stand in our way, thus are not really great weapons as such.
Due to the fact that there is only a handful of planets that can support life (at least that we know of) maybe they wanted to get rid of a 'failed experiment' (Humans) and use the planet Earth for a new weapon.
The planet to which the team travelled to was a military installation much like we have on Earth where the military develop weapons. If we had the ability to place these installations on another planet as to not affect the general populous, we would. This is what they did. The one surviving Engineer who was awaken from his sleep obviously had the missions to reseed Earth before he went in cryostasis. Once he was awoken he simply tried to continue this mission.
I don't claim to have a full understanding of this film as I'm still trying to figure it all out, but you know what, I'm enjoying the process. Sometimes I like to have my mind challenged by films like this, rather than watching a film which leaves very little to the imagination.
My two peneth worth.
The Pact (2012)
Give this a miss
This movie is so bad I can't even begin to list everything that's so very awful about it.
Do not see this movie! Acting is very poor, the storyline rubbish, far too long and made not much effort.
The idea for the story could have been made into something great, but it was let down. We were teased all the way through the film about a horrid past that the two sisters had faced at the hands of their mother, but no story behind this ever developed. The real 'monster' in the film was revealed to us in the last 5 minutes of the film, and I really feel that if they had centred more around him, his story and his background, the film would have been far more interesting and scary and worth watching. Instead we got lots of over dramatic face posing, the occasional poltergeist throwing things around and appearing in the odd photo.
I fully expect this movie to be in the bargain section of the DVD shop, where it's 99p and buy one get four free.
Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
Scary and Different
There's some really bad reviews about this film on IMDb and I don't know why.
The film was low budget but really good. It had an interesting and unique storyline, the acting was good and there was some really scary bits, that literally had you jumping out of your seat.
The ending was also unexpected and left it open for a sequel, which I hope they do. The film is not conventional and maybe that's why some people haven't given it a good rating. I personally thought the different approach the director had taken with this film was great. Just when you think you can predict what's going to happen or have an expectation that 'this is the scary jumping bit' the film does something different; and in turn when you're least expecting something horrible happens.
It's well worth going to see this film if you really do appreciate a good horror.
The Thing (2011)
This film was amazing!!!
We saw this film expecting a cheesy remake but were blown away.
This film ties in beautifully as a prequel and makes The Thing 1982 make more sense if anything.
The acting was great and I really believed in the fear and frustration that the characters faced. The 'Thing' was really scary, but I felt it could have been scarier if it was animatronics not CGI like in the original film. But I'm a bit of a geek for things like that.
Basically a Norwegian team of scientists make a discovery - a frozen life-form encased deep in the ice some way from it's spaceship. They take it back to base to run tests and that's when all hell breaks loose.
There's some really gross bits in this film and people die in unusual and painful ways; mangled, half eaten and infected! I particularly like and appreciate that this films ends with the same scenes at the original The Thing starts.
See this movie and buy the DVD! You won't be sorry.
