Le négociateur (2005)
An extremely clever, funny, adult, violent piece of crime drama
An extremely clever, funny, adult, violent piece of crime drama, set in Montreal, Canada, in the 1970's. Each episode revolves around a radio-journalist, Mac, who embodies all the requisite traits: tall, dark, handsome, driven, confident, suave, flawed and emotional He also possesses something essential that ultimately drives the show: his utter and complete obsession with crime, crime lore, and criminals. It is through his passion for outlaws that connects him to Montreal's criminal underworld as well as their law-enforcement antagonists by virtue of his being media-neutral. He finds himself repeatedly as mediator and unwitting negotiator between criminals and policemen and he succeeds wildly in gaining local fame, garnering trust within the criminal element and becoming, in the police's view, a necessary evil. Well written, beautifully acted and immensely entertaining. 9/10.
The Deep (1999)
A brutal shock to the system!!
I saw this short film at the Montreal film festival in 1998. It debuted ahead of "resurrection" (an interesting se7en-esque Christopher Lambert vehicle). Sufficient to say, it doesn't even wait for the the opening credits to roll before it shocks you, grabs you, throttles you, and jolts you back into your seat, leaving you wondering why every major movie doesn't start off with such intensity. It's that same intensity that follows a group of people trapped in an underground series of caves. Within twenty minutes, mankind has descended to primitive depths, a sophisticated horror creeps into every word spoken aloud and the sudden ending twists your mind into a painful knot that begs for a sequel.
