L7: Pretend We're Dead (2016)
Such an eye opener into the 90s culture
Love L7. Such an eye opener into the 90s culture, especially around these ladies who properly thrashed! Seems like the mainstream media were expecting Joan Jett to turn up and got a bit of a shock. Though I did think it was cute when they mentioned their appearance on the Word on UK TVs Channel 4, as if it was something shocking. I used to watch the Word and trust me a lady getting her foof out on live TV was probably the least shocking thing I saw on that program!
Prometheus (2012)
Stunning
Firstly if you don't know anything about Prometheus and the sci fi mythology that surrounds it all the better. Don't go into this film with any preconceived notions. I think the team that brought you this never had a plan to bring you what you expect and it's all the better for it. If you are hoping for the same old with a quick set up with xenomorph on human action and people running around corridors for the rest of the film while they are picked off one by one you may be surprised. If you expect it to spell everything out like there is some master plan, well as I said leave your expectations at the door. This a beautifully rendered film with a much slower pace than others of the same genre. Prometheus is its own film and I think it's all the better for it. The nods to others are nice and for me it was enough, I think in retrospect I'd have been disappointed and bored if they had gone the familiar route. For those that know Prometheus' pedigree notice how I've tried to avoid mentioning it! For those that are coming into the film with no idea what it is about keep it that way.
Drive (2011)
Stays with you....
I can see why BAFTA had it nominated for Best Film this year. A thoughtful, small little film about blood and car chases. Hard to pin down really, just watch it, be ready to smile and to be shocked, be ready to wake up the next day thinking about it. I honestly didn't think I could be surprised by a film that on paper looks like an average car chase/heist movie, but emotionally it's somewhere between Pulp Fiction and Pan's Labyrinth. I honestly think if I hadn't have dismissed it last year as just another Fast and Furious it would have been my film of 2011, the only film since the Usual Suspects where I just wanted to go back to the beginning and immediately watch again.
Star Trek (2009)
This IS Star Trek
I thought I would give a quick review regarding the people who say "it's a great movie but it isn't Star Trek". While I wouldn't call myself a trekkie (more a sci fi nerd) I can honestly say I have seen every incarnation of Trek to date, every episode, every movie... MMM, maybe I am a trekkie (Though I DO NOT own a uniform!). Gene Rodenberry's vision of Star Trek changed and evolved throughout the various series, so I am going to concentrate on one - Star Trek the original series, not the films with the original crew, the ORIGINAL series (TOS). I still watch TOS today and while later incarnations were more polished and had very credible sci tech and science babble in them, TOS was about the adventure, the relationships between the crew especially between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. They didn't care if the story wouldn't stand up scientifically they were morality plays with friendship at their heart. THIS is what the 2009 incarnation is all about. It isn't like the films with the original crew or the Next Gen or Voyager, but if you honestly sit down and watch the TOS, it is quite a different animal. I think this film is better for that. I once read that Rodenberry was asked what he would like to see for the future of Star Trek and he said he would like to see some bright young thing do it bigger and bolder than he ever could..... Nuff said!
