Hard Candy (2005)
Best Film I have seen this year
I am a film school student, and came on this website because I am so tired of reading reviews on here, and on film review websites from regular people who do not even understand film making, and people reading them actually think they do because they are writing a review. You read so many of bias reviews that have clearly been written by someone close to the project, and their comments do not have anything to do with having broken the film down from the script to acting to what makes it on the screen. Did the director do their job? If you understand film making you will be able to see it. What was the script like? Was it written well and not just for a few of the characters, but all of the characters, and not just the men, but the woman too. Did all of the actors understand their place in the story or were they just doing their own thing which will take away from the actors who doing the job the right way, and the film being received right. I watched a film recently flogging margaret that a main character had the chance to just act crazy on camera basically - and people assume that's good acting. - while it was and worked in that film - he was the only character that really got anything to work with from the writing- not one reviewer could see that and be smart enough to comment on it. and many actors weren't doing anything for their roles which made the more in between actors roles making something real of their parts look pretty blah. again not one reviewer could see this. why are they writing film reviews here or anywhere? it isn't really worth reading any reviews to me. if you do not know how to write a review with all of the above included, you shouldn't be writing them here or anywhere, especially with the comments usually hating on only the actors, and not taking director, writers, editors, into view. That's always a sign that the reviewer has no idea, or of course the T and A comments.
That said, if you do want to write reviews, you should study this film Hard Candy. I wont say anything else cause no one would prob get it. But this is the best film I have finally gotten the chance to be able to see this year hands down. What they do with the few characters in the same space for the length of the film is really unbelievable.
Spiral (2007)
Open eyes, See this!
...I won't say much any thing else here, give anything away, or even really comment on Spiral. But it's definitely worth seeing!
This is one of only a few independent style movies I have seen recently that I don't find much of any problems with. This film is very different, and done very well on all elements of making a movie from the writing to the directing to acting to the story in this genre. I don ever see a film done where there isn't a piece that is out of place somewhere and you can really tell it. This film seems like a first in a while of perfect symmetry.
Amber Tambler, and Joel (forgot last name, sorry) act so good together. They really experience each other unlike any chemistry by actors I have seen lately on the big screen. You will be moved by these actors, and really drawn into their world.
I am very impressed by this production, and can't wait to get to see more from these filmmakers!
I don't know why films like this don't get more attention.
Flogging Margaret (2008)
Not the worst film. Really not the best.
Boy gets dumped by STUPID girl. Boy wallows. Boy meets GREAT girl. Stupid girl comes back. I'll leave out what happens, but this is the movie. All else the movie says it is, it never amounts to. The text is far from great, and so is the acting.Three main characters were irritatingly bad. They never step far from acting the same way, no matter what. They did not make real characters of themselves. The parts and this film needed that. But it is not fair to not give credit, when some of these actors were good. The Chainsaw guy was very funny, and very good at his role. The blonde girl playing Margaret was great. I haven't seen a multilayered straight up manipulative character in a while done that well. And my favorite actresses were the Germans. I wanted them more. Every scene they had, they were believable. Overall I think the writing failed these actors. Good idea, poorly executed. Money, some recasting, a rewrite, good director-this could of been really fun and different.
