House of Kardashian (2023)
Not Sure Who The Audience Is
If you're a fan of the Kardashians this isn't for you.
If you aren't a fan of the Kardashians why would you watch this?
It makes no sense.
They could have taken a lot of angles on this and they choice tabloidy repurposed information.
The first episode was slightly interesting regarding the origin of Kris Jenner, but by the end you're wondering if you can trust any of it.
Way too many in depth subplots when there's enough source material to around.
Where did they get this cast of characters from? Seriously, the people interviewed in this seem like a bunch of random obscure people. They all seem bitter and fame hungry.
Did not enjoy. Would not recommend.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
A Confused Story
This movie does not know what it's about. It comes across as bad fan fiction. Painful to watch, especially for a fan. It's also shot in a way where half of it is physically too dark to even see what's happening.

The Secret of My Succe$s (1987)
Problematic
I loved this movie as a kid and would watch it every time it came on TV, so when I saw it was available to stream via HBO I was excited. I probably haven't seen it in almost 30 years.
Great performances, cute story. I'm sure if you are a male, especially an ambitious male in the business world, it's probably your favorite movie. However as a female viewing this movie I was outraged at the blatant discrimination towards women....although perhaps accurately portrayed...I can't condone it because no one ever learns a lesson about it.
Brantley completely lies about who he is in large part to get her into bed, then criminalizes her over having some notes of his which I did not see a big deal about since they were working so closely together at that point.
Brantley uses completely classic sexual workplace sexual harassment moves initially. It's so uncomfortable, like watching one of those poorly made anti-sexual harassment videos that the company makes you sign off on once a year. But without the follow up explaining that what he did was wrong.
Brantley not only sleeps with his bosses wife, but his AUNT, yet feels it's okay to judge and crucify Christy for sleeping with her boss. This leads to a very difficult -to-watch explosion of bruised male ego.
Then I blinked and the two had made up and were kissing in a elevator. But hey- 80s!
Yeah it's cute and fun- but any woman with even a shred of self respect would find this movie too cringeworthy.
The Conners (2018)
Conflicted
I marathoned the original Roseanne in preparation for watching this. At the time of my watching there were 2 seasons available.
I was a pretty solid fan of the original and if I were rating The Conners subjectively ad a fan of Roseanne I probably would have given it a 3 or a 4, but I chose to be subjective.
Most of my problems with it come from my previous fandom: it's depressing to see where the characters have landed. They destroyed the greatest couple of my youth- Darlene and David. Harris should be 20-something so it makes no sense. Jackie hasn't grown a bit in 20 years. Dan is bumbling. And Becky.....dear lawd. They destroyed beloved characters. Where is Andy, Jerry, Crystal, little Ed? It's so weird that they haven't taken the opportunity to bring in these characters.
That aside, if you take this as a new show and separate it from the original then it's not a bad show. It's watchable. It's cute. No real laughs but it's not painful. Beverly is still a gem. Mark is an interesting character that they could expand on. They could do more with DJ's family but Geena is grating. It's also annoying watching the actress that plays Harris essentially playing the non-cable version of her Shameless character.
But still, it's watchable. I just would have never watched it had it not been associated with the original. Yet the association with the original is what makes it hard to watch. That's the rub.
As far as the death of Roseanne....it's really not a big deal. It helps to disassociate this show from the original. It's a fun quirky show overall.
Roseanne (1988)
Solid Show
I watched "Roseanne" when it originally aired and it was one of my favorite shows as a kid/teen. I recently decided to rewatch the series because I wanted to check out the reboot/The Conners.
The show really stands up in a lot of ways. Very 90s. Very interesting because it was considered so progressive and political back in the day, but what was once considered very liberal now occasionally becomes cringeworthy in its misplaced message. The majority of it holds up well though.
The characters are great. Darlene might be one of the greatest written and acted characters of all time. The family is so relatable and the jokes are still funny.
We all know season 9 is virtually unwatchable but it's not so bad to indulge in the fantasy. The originally finale always bothered me with Roseanne's narrative about Dan and Becky/Mark/Darlene/David.
Then I watched "season 10" for the first time. It was hard to find because it's been scrubbed from the universe due to Roseanne's tweetgate. The best thing about season 10 was the denial of season 9's storyline. I appreciated that.
Other than that season 10 was a disgrace. They killed the legacy of the show. Roseanne's political leanings where a complete 180 with no explanation. She promoted hitting kids, which contradicted numerous storylines from the original run. America's favorite father Dan is now a bumbling senior citizen who also seems to have done a 180 is his beliefs. Darlene has lost her edge. Becky is interesting. In the end she turned out to be what everyone feared her becoming, but they could have gone deeper with it. They wind up doing so on The Conners. I'm glad they acknowledged the passing of Mark aka Glen Quinn.
Okay, some of the stories/jokes worked. I'll admit it. But the first episode was so aggressive in all the wrong ways that it was hard to relax enough to enjoy them. Also the pacing was painfully slow. And I absolutely hate how off some things are: Harris should be 20 something, where is Andy, one mention of Jerry then nothing, etc.
So basically the show is amazing, but don't take season 9 seriously and don't watch season 10.
Upload (2020)
Good Stuff
This was recommended to me by a friend and I watched it all- just season 1 is currently available- in one sitting. I went into it knowing nothing but the title. I'll also state that I have only watched a few episodes of Black Mirror but never really got into it so I can't really speak to similarities there.
I was instantly intrigued. Within 10 minutes the general concept is laid out so it was very easy to get in to.
The characters were like able, the mystery was just twisty and turny enough. The future portrayed was eerily realistic while also being a complete fantasy. It's a technological fantasy thriller but without using that tired device of overly-technological nonsense language to insult the audience. This is a tech thriller for normal people.
I found myself really accepting the premise, even to the point where I can (embarrassingly) admit I almost googled one of the fantasy locales before I stopped myself and chuckled.
I was really impressed with the seamlessness. Upload manages to create an extensive fantasy world that looks fleshed out. Not sure what the budget was to make this but it looks like movie quality budget.
My only complaint is that there was not more to watch. At the same time season 1 could stand alone as a miniseries with a haunting last line.
The Goldbergs (2013)
Honest Review
Okay so I just binged the first 7 seasons of this show over the course of like 5 days. Generally I liked it a lot. It serves its purpose. I laughed out loud an embarrassing amount of times considering I was alone. The nostalgia is on point. It doesn't solely rely on tired 80s nostalgia, but really hits on some truly forgotten gems. The characters are generally like able, specifically Beverly and Murray. The kids are mostly like able but some times the selfishness is too much to handle. The character growth for the kids is extremely slow and is often wiped away for the sake of an episode, but perhaps this is true of of most teenagers.
Other random thoughts:
At times it's a little self indulgent, but then other times I appreciate the inclusion of the real life tid bits at the end.
The "other Adam Goldberg" bit goes slightly too far, but is forgivable. However if you don't know the backstory it is extremely uncomfortable.
Adam's catchphrase of "Balls!" Gets extremely annoying around season 4.
People who try to play detective in figuring out the dates of everything don't get the point. When we look back on our youth we don't really see it accurately or even chronological. I feel like Adam F. Goldberg has probably been patient with these people but I give him permission to be thoroughly annoyed with them.
Barry is such a great character but I'd love for him to have a bit more growth.
I kind of wish Beverly was my mom. Sometimes I get sad that the kids are so unappreciative.
I was several seasons in before I learned the real Murray had passed away in 2008. I find it really interesting that none of the "real" footage ever acknowledges it.
Some of the plot holes are disappointing. Murray doesn't have any hobbies but later he's a long time stamp collector. He's never danced but he was Tevye in Fiddler. He never had any friends but then he had the Jokers. Stuff like that.
In the end, I am glad Adam F Goldberg takes such gentle care of the fans of the movies, music, TV Shows etc that are showcased. That's the highest compliment.
The Happytime Murders (2018)
Let's not over analyze this....
It's real simple: You grew up on muppets; now puppets are doing blow and doing each other. We've all grown up and it's hysterical.
Trainwreck (2015)
Wow.
I'm one of those people that hates everything and complains constantly. I have nothing negative to say about this movie. I loved it so much I really can't even properly express how great it is. I have never laughed so hard at a movie. It wasn't over the top or silly. It was realistic, relate-able, and, at times, touching. Definitely not a "chick flick" just because the lead is female. The men in the audience seemed to be having a great time. True, this film won't be for everyone, but it will be everything for those it is for. Amy Schumer's writing is on point. The real shock to me was Lebron James. I am not a sports person and didn't really know who he was. And I hate when athletes appear in movies or T.V. because they have no acting capabilities and its annoying, but Lebron James was totally committed and hysterical.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Expected it to be horrible. It was.
This movie was terrible.
It was lazy in terms of story. A lot of the elements of the world the Wachowskis created seemed like they were created with some kind of Sci-Fi/Fantasy magnetic poetry set. I love Mila Kunis and like Channing Tatum, but they were not fit for these roles. It's like they casted super popular people in a super geek movie and it just wasn't a fit. Plus they had no chemistry. The worst part was Eddie Redmayne's overacting. How does this guy have an acting career? Is it just because he's British? I think the failure of this film comes from the Wachowskis trying to put too many elements in. In a way the movie is almost a parody of Sci-fi/Fantasy films. Like The Wachowskis dumbed down the entire genre to try to bring in a new audience of jocks and princesses. It's not going to work. It will appeal to overweight, bearded, males who spend Saturday nights writing fan fiction in their parent's basements. Because this is something they could have written. Also - the movie was heavily laden with anti-feminism. Another failed attempt at having a strong female lead. Mila Kunis falls down a lot and needs Tatum to keep rescuing her. She doesn't scream a lot though. I liked that. Lengthy unnecessary action sequences, forced romance, lazy story....the movie is a cliché wrapped in a parody dressed as a caricature of itself.
