Shrooms (2007)
predictable but watchable
basically, you shouldn't take this film to seriously. it is a mid range horror thriller, not going too give you any real fright but it might make u jump a bit. the ending is, in my opinion, very clear from the beginning, and doesn't come as a shock. the irish forest makes a perfect setting, and the sound guy deserves a clap as that rather creepy music provides a lot of suspense. the acting is amateur, and it is pretty clear that this is a low budget film.
this film isn't for film buffs, it received quite bad ratings, this is for teens who want till fill 90 minutes without being emotionally or intellectually drained. this film is bordering on boredom, but it is one that will fulfill its purpose, which is to give you something to do for an hour and a bit. its an okay film.
Big Brother (2000)
very good show, but much like mar-mite
i am an avid fan of this show, and have watched every series. when it first started out in 2000, it was intended to last for one series and be a social experiment. the first two series were this. from then on in, channel 4 realised that they are better off marketing this as entertainment, voyeuristic and easy to watch TV. they basically shove 10 people into a house and see what happens. as the show has progressed, more and more people are being put in, and the show is lasting longer. now on its 9 series, the show is starting to lose its shine. i think everyone thinks it is repetitive, and they have seen it all before.
despite this, i still think the show is great. this series is especially diverse. they have a blind man and an albino, a Buddhist and a Muslim and two immigrants, and a strict catholic. you really either love this series or hate it. a lot of people think it is boring to just watch people in a house, but big brother intrude, and throw some twists in to make it a bit more exciting. this is one of the reasons it has swayed from its original concept, because there are so many new people and twists put in throughout the series.
the first series was great, a good bunch of people with one evil fella, nick bate-men, who showed the viewing public how bad and desperate some people are for fame. he said he killed his wife by accident when she was waiting outside. the show pushes people to their mental limits, and shows how strong or weak some people are.
in the past they have put some people they shouldn't have put in, such as Shabaz, who was bullied and even threatened suicide. they put in lea, who was a porn star and had body-dismorphia. they put in Nikki, who had suffered from an eating disorder. Sam, a pre-op transsexual, was paranoid, Pete who had Tourette's, and Mikey who is blind. the shows morals and integrity have therefore been called into question 'what will they do for ratings?' is the question that people ask. some people believe they are irresponsible. big brother defends themselves by saying every person who enters undergoes a vigorous physcological analysis.
this show is the but of controversy, never being away from the papers. u really have to treat the show for what it is, because it certainly isn't intellectual viewing anymore, this was the start of reality TV, and has now developed a cult following who will not stop watching, i personally recommend it. i suggest you try it, and if you don't like it then fine, but don't prejudge it when you haven't seen it
My Family (2000)
a great series, despite some unfavourable reviews
it is no surprise that this series has been running for eight series. it is an absolutely amazing hilarious comedy. many critics look down on the series, but i personally love it. every episode is funny, providing almost continuous laughs. there is a really good chemistry between the main characters, making it believable that they are a really family. the jokes are short but often. this is what it has been panned for, lazy writing, but it is still a hilarious series.
the only thing that sometimes annoys me is that supporting characters some how move in to the home, and it doesn't really make sense at times. despite this, every episode offers a plot that develops quick and provides comical value. the actors are great, my favourite character is Ben. you will probably find that a lot of the watcher reviews are good, and this is because the show is excellent, and can be watched over and over again. one of the most popular comedy series going, and it is no surprise. give it a go!
The War at Home (2005)
funny and different comedy
i really like this series. its funny and unique style of off the wall, sometimes controversial comedy, is a fresh take on the genre. whilst it is a sitcom, it stands out due to the what could be awkward subjects.
every aspect has a comedy turn, and the show really is very good. my favourite part of the program is the rather odd comments of the father, dave. his rants break the program up, and allow a really good flow. not perfect, because sometimes the comedy isn't laugh out loud funny, and the actors sometimes seem to be waiting for an audience response, but otherwise this program is good.
i strongly recommend this program, and am very sad that it has been cancelled. please make another series, and finish it properly
Ugly Betty (2006)
brilliant!!
this show is addictive. i absolutely love it. the storyline is pretty typical, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the show. the acting is very good. the characters that you are meant to like are likable, and the characters you are meant to love to hate you do. they work well together, and whilst the storyline is somewhat unbelievable, it is so ridiculous its brilliant.
my favourite character is amanda or mark. there is a clear chemistry between them, and whilst it is acting, it looks so believable. a quality cast and a rather elaborate plot combine to make an addictive show. i definitely recommend it!
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
dull in comparison to the prequels
i think everyone expected so much from this after the last two movies. i did, and i was very much disappointed. the story line is convoluted. having two villains is a bad idea. the movie is unnecessarily long, and towards the end, it feels more like a task to watch the movie than a pleasure. the acting isn't terrible, as expected, but the storyline certainly is weak. the writers tried to hard to live up to the inevitable hype, and trying so hard has ruined the movie.
the first villain is good, and it is very much enough. why they had to put in a second one i will never know. the CGI is good, and the visuals amazing, but attention is not sustained throughout. the storyline is simply too long. no matter how much i try, i just cant stop thinking 'when will this end?' i don't recommend it. very disappointing.
Pushing Daisies (2007)
surprisingly good
when the adverts for this show first appeared, i didn't completely understand the plot of the show. despite this, i thought i would give it a go. i am very much glad i did. the concept is fairly simple, and something that i have never seen before, and it therefore offers a breath of fresh air. it is kind of a murder mystery, with a hint of light hearted comedy. it makes you chuckle to yourself, something that is very much a rarity these days. the characters work well together, and the actors create a chemistry between them which is pleasurable to watch. a really great series, and i hope they do more series, because if the episodes so far are anything to go bye, then they will be great.
i really recommend this series, because it is a light hearted comedy with a splash of murder to keep you gripped. these aren't the usual murder mysteries, they are very much alternative, which again sets it out from the rest of the rubbish on TV. the narrators voice is great as well!
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
very very funny
at first i was sceptical about this show. i wanted to buy it on itunes but some of the reviews were very critical. i decided to check it out on TV. i am so glad i discovered this show. it is a great comedy, and very easily one of the best on TV. i really hope this show doesn't get cancelled.
okay, maybe it is a bit cheesy, but the laughs are pretty much relentless. i really look forward to watching this show. my favourite character is sheldon. the acting is really very good, and very humorous. there is an obvious chemistry between the characters, and they play off each other very well.
great comedy with great writing, great characters and great acting, although nothing less can be expected from chuck lorre. well done, u have delivered yet again. i recommend u try it, u wont regret it
Toy Story (1995)
simply a timeless classic
this movie is one of the best, if not the best animated movie i have ever seen. i have seen this feel so many times, and yet every time i see it is has the same magic as when i first saw it. i would strongly recommend this film to anyone that has a shred of taste. suitable for adults and children alike. there is nothing this film doesn't have.
hilarious and sweet. the voice actors finish this movie off, and it will stay on your mind for a very long time.
i have seen all of the pixar movies i can think of, and by far this stands out as the best. how anyone doesn't like this movie i don't know. such a simple story, that we all dreamt up when we were young, is captured in an incredible fashion. this movie simply would not work as well if it was normal cartoon. followed up by an equally good movie, it is easy to say that you will never see another movie that captures your childhood as well as this does
the plot is simple, and never feels to simple or complicated. there is never a second where there is confusion, or there is not something that the audience will like. attention is captured and maintained.
Titanic (1997)
very very good, well worthy of the numerous Oscars it was awarded
having been just five when Titanic was first released, i never got to see it in the cinema. i wish i had, because i know the magic, tension and pure brilliance that oozes from this movie would only be strengthened in the cinema. having seen the movie so many times, i know the plot very very well. despite this, i watch it every time it is on, simply because i know the experience i will get from it is brilliant.
tension grips this movie, as the movie grips and pulls you in. relentlessly holding on until the heart wrenching climax. even then it stays with you. i never got bored during the movie, never once though, when will this be over. the experience is a fountain of enjoyment. the actors set this off, and they work well with the special effects, which add a true sense of realism, as though the audience is on the boat with them. you sit frozen, and are put in the position of Kate Winslet, shaking furiously at the locked gate, wading through the water, feeling the cold creep up, as you search for Jack, played amazingly by Leonardo DiCaprio. the sense of urgency and knuckle whitening tension is relentless, and this is what makes this movie so deserved of its awards, and its place in my memory.
i know i am not alone when i say that this is an all time classic. such action can never be created again. despite its inevitable ending, you hope and pray for some sort of let up, allowing these characters to survive.
one of my favourite movies ever. this movie simply never tires
