No Country for Old Men (2007)
Great movie with a few flaws.
This movie had me hooked from the beginning. The acting was top notch and the story was written to perfection until the very end, and a few flaws during the half way point of the movie. First of all, especially in Texas, if you kill a cop, your face will be plastered everywhere and they will hunt you down. In this movie, we have this psycho just driving around with no cares, getting into shootouts in a motel room and then in the street and NO ONE cares to call the cops? I mean, this psycho shoots three people in a motel room and then just sits down and relaxes without any notion that "maybe I should leave the scene"? Where are the cops in this town? Also, the ending did not tie anything together, Tommy Lee Jones, who is a sheriff looking for this psycho, talks and talks about a dream he had and then all of sudden the movie just ends. Okay, so, what was the point of having Tommy Lee Jones character in the movie? I would have given this a ten, but those few things I pointed out prevented me from doing that. I still give this a 9 because of the great performances, story(for the most part), and the shootout sequences. All that was done exceptionally well, but it just needed a stronger ending.
Death Proof (2007)
Waste of Time.
The only good thing about this movie is Kurt Russell and the first crash sequence, which I have to say was fantastic. Other than that, Death Proof has no compelling reason to spend two hours watching, especially when an hour and forty minutes of that is nothing but babble between several obnoxious women. This is one of those films that really relies on a multi-million dollar budget to make it a great film, well, even with all that money behind it, it still fails miserably to consider this even a mediocre movie, let alone a great movie. It is amazing to me how this movie has a user rating over 7, my best guess is that they all have to be Tarantino fans who think anything he puts out is great, which is rubbish because this movie was not good. The ending sequence was absolutely ridiculous and made no sense at all, there is no way three bimbos would overpower and get the better of Stunt Man Mike. That was just too stupid to believe and to take seriously. I would much rather spend time watching a B movie that relies on talent and creativity alone, and not millions and millions of dollars like Death Proof, and the funny thing is is that this movie is still really bad. I do think Tarantino has put out some good movies, but Death Proof is definitely not one of them.
What Lies Beneath (2000)
10 star movie until the very end.
This was a very good movie that had some brilliant acting and a very creative story. Michelle Pfieffer, Harrison Ford, Diana Scarwid, and some of the others were fantastic. I especially liked Diana Scarwid's character of Jody. She was very enlightening. Obviously for a mega budget film, it was great, usually films that have tons and tons of money behind it, lack heart and soul, but not this one. I would have given this a ten, but the very end was just too much, the part after Ford and Pfieffer are in the lake submerged in the truck as they are sinking. I don't wanna mention too much and give anything away. I just wish it would have ended a little different, but, oh well, this is still a great movie. One of the things that I truly appreciated was that it was very easy to follow and everything was coming together as to what was going and who this mysterious entity was and why she was there haunting Pfieffer's character. I find it a little surprising that the user rating for this movie is about 6.5, and movies like Die Hard 4 are at an 8 or so. Die Hard 4 is a perfect example of a movie with no heart and soul that just has explosions and Million Dollar Special FX and that that alone is supposed to make it a good movie. I DO NOT think so. Back to What Lies Beneath, Zemeckis did a great job with this and I really had a good time watching this.
Faded Dreams (2007)
Excellent Independent Film.
Excellent independent film. I especially appreciated the filmmakers dedication to athletes at the very end of the film credits, It says; "This is for all the athletes who were not given a chance, even though they earned it." I had heard about this movie from other people and through the internet and I just now decided to check it out for myself, and I found this film to be very real and honest. I have read good and bad reviews about this movie and in my opinion, I tend to lean towards the good reviews. Most of the negative reviews are one to two sentences in length and they really offer no insight on the movie and the message it is trying to send. One example, "it is a low budget film", Since when does a film have to have a big budget to be good? I have seen some real stinkers with extremely high budgets, and I find it that independent films have more heart and soul than big productions. The acting? Well, I thought that this was better acted than a lot of movies I have seen, the character that the story was based upon was as good as any other actor I have seen in any role. This movie does tend to expose corrupt coaches, and therefore, I can see why some people would not want to rave about this film. For a film that was shot for 15,000 dollars, checked on IMDb, it was done quite well, the games were done as well as they could have been with a limited budget. It seems to me like in this day and age, if movies don't have a budget of 50 million dollars and don't have explosions and what not, they are not considered good. I would take this film over those films that have no heart and soul, like I previously said, any day.
