Small Crimes (2017)
A pure unadulterated "10 plus"
Truly one of the best films ever made in this genre. I dare.you to only watch it once. I return to it every month, savoring moments. Like what does the two headed raccoon fetus in the jar mean, on the shelf, next to the metal plant hanging blade and that brass lock. WTF?! So many metaphors for redemption, compulsion, addiction, corruption... it's literally 100x better than that piece of trash "Pulp Fiction" (worst junkie impersonation on film EVER). WATCH THIS NOW!!! Then come back here and tell me I wasn't telling then truth. I love everything about this, but especially the writing. Makes me wet!
Red Joan (2018)
A better film than these reviews would lead us to believe....
Joan was an unsung hero to a world gone mad. The history books ignore them. The critics despise them. The faktriots disparage them. But they made all this possible. Joan gave us more than a chance. She gave us all a future. The film strays from the book it's based on, but the bullet points remain. Thank the gods & goddesses for Internationals like Joan and her friends.
AC/DC: Fly on the Wall (1985)
Quit simply, the greatest hard rock video of an entire decade...
And they made it using the single greatest album this band every recorded. The band was simply at the very penultimate moment in their 40+ year career when they made Fly On The Wall. The album is in my top 10 to this day, and the tour that year (1985) still ranks as the single biggest and loudest public address system I have ever heard in my entire life.
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Just plain ol' dumb, with a huge dollop of cornball on top....
I'm giving this a 2 instead of a 1 solely for the nosy count, which is very satisfying. Lots of awesome and creative dead body shots. Be sure and pay attention to the Spinal Tap band in the ballroom. They must've cast those nit wits based on their beard growth. The drums are so covered in dust you wonder why they just didn't wash them off? How about the cheesy model boats they keep cutting too? Or the phony "slow rocking camera work" (yes, we know, we're suppose to be on a BOAT!) - they just don't make movies this bad anymore. Now, someone needs to count the number of people who die. If you ask me, it's not enough.
Hamish Macbeth (1995)
Maybe it's the westie, maybe it's Carlyle, but we LOVE this...
It's a bit weird. And it's a lot Scottish. And it's a bit all over the place. Disembodied spirits. Crimes. Not crimes. Drama. And lil of the old slap and tickle. I can't believe it took us 26 years after the fact to discover this BBC Scotland gem! It's touching, it's funny at times, it's cute. It's inspiring. It's a who dunit. But mostly it's just Scottish. Really really Scottish. So glad we found this. I will DEFINITELY be buying the DVD's. I'd put this right up there with the best American televised cop shows. It's Jim Rockford meets Barney Miller. With westies! Give it a chance. You won't regret it.
Life of Brian (1979)
Funniest Monty Python film ever!
Title says it all. How daft does one have to be NOT ago give this a "10 out of 10" rating? Fookin' hell. I saw it on a double dat e at the theatre when I was in 11th grade with my 1st girlfriend Maggie May (her real name). She recently died of COVID I read. Sad. But the movie will remain in my heart forever.
A Day in the Death of Donny B. (1969)
The real thing...
Having had my own heroin experience (6+ yrs clean now, but 30 years gone), this film is as close as it gets to telling the truth: opiate addiction is death. This should be mandatory viewing for every high school. On a lighter note, how do I get a copy of the soundtrack?
Smoked Hams (1934)
Shemp is a comedy God. Disagree? Read no further...
A comedy short with Shemp Howard doing his slapstick, with support from Lionel Standard (the butler from TV's "Hart to Hart" - plus an appearance by the Jolly Bakers, a clay modeler who makes faces out of... what else? Clay. A hidden gem that deserves to be held aloft with our specie's greatest accomplishments: the pyramids of Giza, The Wizard of Oz, and.... this cinematic work of genius. Enjoy!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Crap...
Dumb. Jim Carrey in pain. Wanted to leave, then ended b4 I could. Just. Dumb.
Pumpkinhead (1988)
What a steaming pile...
Who talked Lance Henriksen into doing this chunk of excrement? House payment? Drug Rehab? None of this makes any real sense. The popular kids are all dressed like they each represent a different 80's video band. There's Duran Duran guy. There's Men at Work dude. It's just. Awful. Plot is bad. Actors are bad. Even the bad... is bad. Oh, here comes the stellar FX sequence. Yawn.
An Injury to One (2002)
Just stunning. Intriguing. Makes me proud to be an American.
An incredible achievement. I must meet this film maker. The music works so well, the narration too. A beautiful piece of Americana. I found mine in cable late one night and went to great trouble to tape it to VHS. I now cherish that tape as much as I cherish my copy of the Rolling Stones' C*cksucker Blues. A must see piece of work.
Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell (2013)
Best take on the GOP/moral majority/Trumpian mindset that MADE our current administration possible!
Could possibly be the best weekly commentary aired on cable TV that deals directly with the mindset behind those responsible for our current state of affairs during this national nightmare. Mr Sorvino proves his chops again and again and the rest of the cast is just so perfect. Great example of how proper casting alone can determine the fate of a series. Perfectomundo. Watch all the regulars in 10 yrs appear all over the cinematic zeitgeist, TV to film and beyond. The special effects crew get an especially special tip of the gore filled hat for totally understanding what needs to be done (live animatronics) and what doesn't (cgi). Bravo. When the skin covered box set comes out, I am SO going to be putting that on a credit card. That is, if the entire banking system isn't reduced to one simple 3 digit phrase, tattooed on all our hands by then. It could happen....
