Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) is a plump, outsider and big hair teenage girl who has a dream, she dreams of dancing with Link Larkin (Zac Efron) the hearthrob of Daytime TV, and the school, on 'The Corny Collins Show' hosted by Corny Collins (James Marsden). Her and her best friend Penny Pingleton (Amanda Bynes) watch the show everyday.
Although working on The Corny Collins Show is her dream job, is also has its flaws. Amber Von' Tussle (Brittany Snow), Link Larkin's girlfriend and One of the leading dancers on the show. Her mother is the The Corny Collins Show station's manager, Velma Von' Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer).
When auditions come for the TV show Tracy feels so pationate about going, although her mother Edna Turnblad (John Travolta) says no way! This is because she is afraid they will hurt her because of her size. Tracy's father Wilbur Turnblad (Christopher Walken) explains why her mother refused, he says Tracy can go. Edna is not happy.
Nethertheless, Tracy goes on with the plan, the next morning, accompined by Penny, Tracy arrives at the studio to audition.
Velma Von' Tussle and Tracy did not get along. Velma made fun of Tracy's flaws, her size, her belifes about racism. Tracy believes that black kids deserve to dance on TV just as much as white kids. But as this is 1962 TV has Negro Day once a month. The audition didn't go well.
Tracy becomes close with the black children through detention and secretly dances with them regularly. Seaweed Stubbs (Elijah Kelley) is the leading dancer on Negro Day as well as his mother being the manager of Negro Day, Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifa). Much like Tracy, Seaweed's younger sister Little Inez (Taylor Parks) has a dream. To dance of Negro Day when she is a few years older.
A few days later the children of Pattison High School are dancing, Although, the black's and the white's being separated by rope, Tracy dances her heart out. Luckily enough for her, Corny Collins was watching. He immediately gets her on the show and she becomes an instant hit with boys and girls her age/younger. Her parents and Penny are ecstatic and Wilbur is making a money out of Tracy merchandise, that he is selling in his Joke shop, Hardy Har Har Har.
Velma Von' Tussle is not a happy lady, especially when she finds out that her daughter Amber is hurt because of Tracy & Link getting closer, and Link making friends with black kids. Velma has had enough.
She cancels Negro Day! So, Tracy, along with Black people, they march, to fight Racism and get TV officaly integrated! The Police immediately tell them to go home, but Tracy is having none of it. When she hits and police officer on the head, he attempts to arrest her. She runs.
Penny helps her immedeitly, hiding her in the celler of Penny's house, but when Penny's mother, Prudy Pingleton (Alison Janney) finds Tracy and Penny in the celler, she calls the cops. She ties Penny to her bed and tells her she will never leave her bedroom. Within moments of being in the bedroom, tied up, Seaweed climbs through her window and unties her. They kiss and fall in love.
As they let Tracy out of the celler, they put her in the trunk of the car so the police don't find her.
Tracy's other dream, becoming Miss. Teenage Hairspray (Who She Is A Canditit For). She sneaks in and dances.
I wont let the biggest spoiler away.
