The Hangover Part II (2011)
Equally as good as the first!
I'm sure what you've probably heard 'It's basically the same as the first but dirtier' Well i'm not gonna lie, it's true, but it's still an awesome film that's equally as good as the first, the title of the film is called 'the hangover' honestly what were you expecting? OK It's always risky if you're gonna repeat the same gags - even in different contexts - but I thought it worked well. It made the actual hangover itself seem a complete copy of the first, which almost gives it a supernatural presence like it's following them.
I just think people were too hasty to point the finger at the similarities, simply forgetting that it was the intention and wasn't accidental. Todd Phillips knew he wasn't going to get away with an almost carbon copy so he had to make it different; he did this by making the jokes a bit more vulgar and disgusting... yeah i'll admit at some parts I did wonder if he pushed it a bit, but I found myself and most of the people in the cinema laughing and I guarantee those who slammed it as 'over the top' laughed themselves. The cast did a great job of portraying their characters, they're all believable characters who we all probably know in real life. I thought the addition of chow was executed well and he did a top job stealing the show along with Galifianakis (Alan) who was also brilliant.
Point is, it's similar to the first... yes, but does a good job of it. It's a great comedy and will definitely make you laugh.
Cyrus (2010)
Wasted potential
When I heard the plot to this film, I thought, "wow that's a really good idea" Like a mommy's boy and his step father having an all out war to compete for the mother's affection whilst keeping her out of the light. It sounded quite exciting.
When I eventually saw the film however, I was very disappointed. Instead of focusing on the comedy and the war between the son and step dad, it focused more on the morals of honesty, John C. Reilly's annoying and pathetic character and all other sorts of rubbish. At times it felt like I wasn't even watching a comedy, the odd gag or funny scene popped in every now and then to make sure you thought you were watching a comedy.
Despite the major problem with the story, it's not too bad, the gags and jokes are funny, some are instead awkward and hard to watch, but I can look past that. Jonah Hill does a superb job of playing the son and definitely steals the show.
The only other minor problem was the shaky camera, I don't get it. I see this happening in a lot of new comedy films, but it's annoying and doesn't add any affect to the film - it just feels like i'm watching a lost episode of the office.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010)
Brilliant film, but left me unsatisfied
I've never been a massive fan of the Harry Potter series until recently and I only ever read about 2 or 3 of the books; so I'm not a die hard fan of the series, but i do enjoy the films a lot. I only recently finished watching the half blood prince too, so i wasn't sitting in a dark corner biting my nails waiting for this to come out, so i had no hype to disappoint me. I did however hear a lot about this film, after all, it was the first part in an epic grand finale and they definitely saved the best till last.
The film was brilliant - don't get me wrong - it was full of tension and edge of your seat excitement, but throughout the film I was constantly apprehensive. I was waiting for a massive moment that was going to shock the audience - something totally unexpected - I mean, after all, this is the final piece in a massive film series. So whilst I was waiting for something to happen, nothing really did. There was some bits that I'm sure hardcore fans would tell me otherwise and who probably cried in some of those scenes, but as a regular fan; nothing really major. Overall: fantastic film, but I feel there wasn't enough major moments.
Shutter Island (2010)
I'd rather die a hero, than live as a monster
Shutter island really is a great film, and could be my favourite film of all time, which is why it's so hard to review, everything in the film is superb. The storyline really is original and fascinating, but the acting and chemistry between the characters is what gripped me. Dicaprio steals the show in this with his stunning performance as the Marshall. I just couldn't keep my eyes off Dicaprio every time he was put with another character, how he reacted around them, what things he would say. The way he slowly unravels the case and digs up clues at a calm and cool pace makes the movie smooth and well put together. Dicaprio's character acts just how you'd expect a (MASSIVE SPOILER) mentally ill person thinking they're a federal Marshall to act. How you get to see everything pieced together at the end as well is so satisfying and you don't look back at how things were done and think 'well that seemed a bit far-fetched' in fact you think 'how did i miss all that!' Shutter island really is a brilliant film and delivers an important message, if you haven't seen it yet then what are you waiting for?
Vampires Suck (2010)
A parody that just wasn't needed.
Anyone who has seen twilight, or hasn't been living under a rock will know that twilight is a dodgy romance full of clichés and bad writing. For that reason it just can't be parodied. Everyone knows the flaws and weak points of the film, so how someone was given the money to put this into a film really makes me question life. It's like making a film about making fun of tiger woods, we all know the story and jokes, just leave it alone. All you need to parody twilight at the most is a 5 minute youtube parody of the key scenes from the film - no, not even that - just a parody of the trailer would be enough. That's it. There's no need for a full feature length film. I mean yes, the film is bound to have some funny lines and a couple of good gags that will make you laugh, but by making it into a whole film just ruined the joke entirely. Maybe i'm looking into it too much?
The Expendables (2010)
Care bears on acid
The expendables was brilliant. I had high expectations, and they were pretty much met. I was expecting a nostalgic return to the cliché 80's action genre. The one-liners, mindless destruction, ridiculous action sequences, powerful explosions. But what I saw was a modern look at the genre. Don't get me wrong, the film was still brilliant - but I think it took itself too seriously - well it had its moments of humour and there were times when it went over the top, but it just didn't have that 80's action charm - I don't know how to explain it, but it was still good. It has so many action legends that everyone will have one they love in it, I myself hoped for a bit more screen time from Arnie, but i knew deep down it would never of happened. Overall a harmless entertaining action flick! a joy to watch!
Body of Lies (2008)
Slow and dull
Body of lies is OK, but that's about it. Maybe i'm just stupid, or maybe I'm just put off by political movies so much that i lose concentration. The film seemed to jump from one plot to another and i didn't really understand what was going on... or why. The first 30 minutes are interesting. The action and storyline are gripping to watch. But after Dicaprio's friend is smashed to 'pieces' in a car crash, i had no idea what was going on. the final 30 minutes started to make sense - the CIA setting up some people with mild terrorist connections into a fake terrorist group so they could infiltrate the big bad terrorist. But I still struggled to make sense of how they went about it and how it fell apart. And couldn't that have been the plot for the whole movie? it sounded good enough and it was the part of the film that made me think 'aahhhhhhh' But what i ask myself is, what the hell happened before all that? If political propaganda is your kind of thing, then check it out. If not, stay away from this movie.
Devil (2010)
The equivalent of being locked in a cell with George Michael
This film was actually quite good, but i could do without the narration of some overly religious racounteer security guard. Basically the common fear of being stuck in a lift - but with a twist. 5 people enter a lift, but they all have something in common. they've all sinned. well, the devil sure has his work cut out for him because it's his job to come and kill them. Every 5 minutes or so he comes to kill someone, but every time he does the lights go out and you hear sound effects which just makes it seem like a cheap trick. That doesn't make the film bad though, it kind of makes it interesting and mysterious. The ending is scary as hell. This movie definitely has the best portrayal of the devil i've ever seen. Having it stare at you and talk to you in a creepy terrifying voice with deep black eyes makes it so intimidating (no word of a lie, but i actually closed my eyes several times and i'm a 20 year old male) Definitely check this movie out, entertaining and scary.
Malibu Shark Attack (2009)
Just terrible
I'm not sure whether this is actually a film, or a TV series, but i bought it as a whole feature length film because it looked interesting, a massive shark on the cover swallowing someone; but it turns out there are about 7 4ft long sharks. The film is shocking, really bad. So, what happens when a bunch of uncoordinated lifeguards become stranded in an indestructible lifeguard cabin after being hit by a tsunami? they're hunted by special needs sharks of course! A group of survivors who look like the stunt team from lost are hunt by the most un-intimidating sharks in the world who look like they've escaped from a circus. That's about it. Every character's involved in some sort of love triangle which just makes you want them dead... and you'll only be disappointed because about 1 person dies. That's all there is to say about this movie really. It may sound like a Petty and pointless review but it really is that bad.
Harry Brown (2009)
Great film, but you'll feel depressed after
This film was fantastic, its accurate depiction of modern gritty Britain is portrayed so well, it's almost like watching a documentary. The scenes where harry often looks out his window and witnesses something happen almost makes it feel you're in his shoes. However, after seeing all this - you can't help but want to kill yourself afterwards... It's far too accurate in its depiction of modern Britain. After watching it you'll realise 'this is the country i live in' (if you live in Britain of course) the violence, the lack of justice and... the... well i can't say but we all know; the tracksuit wearing, jobless, sovereign sucking, Wayne Rooney brown nosers. The film is really great to watch, the acting's superb, the soundtrack fits perfectly - everything just fits together. Overall the film is great, but it'll either make you very depressed - or want to go out and burn every council estate to the ground.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Good film, but overrated.
I went to see paranormal activity with high expectations, the whole hype got me excited and I was looking forward to being scared to death; even the ticket lady said 'prepare to be scared' The film starts off pretty slow, which is nice because it gives you a bit of back story, but it seems to maintain a slow sort of escalation. The 'paranormal happenings' start off small scale and not very frightening, then they gradually build up to be more jumpy and scary; though I think this was a bad idea as it doesn't build up any form of a surprise and almost seems artificial...
The main problem I had with the film was that there was no real mystery and it was pretty short. I wanted to see a bit more from the psychic and perhaps a séance. It's not like they could have made it more interesting by making it longer, they pretty much put in everything without pushing it.
The acting was pretty good - which surprised me - as I thought with such a low budget the film would have had some cheap actors, but no, the acting was quite impressive. overall the film was pretty good, a decent flick and worth the money; I didn't find it scary and it didn't give me nightmares or keep me up all night with the light on, but maybe that was just me.
