Don't Look Up (2021)
They Nailed Our Downfall Down to Every Detail
We really do have it all. I watched it twice and find it disturbing, tragic, stressful, and all too real.
This society we've somehow created will be our undoing and this movie hits every theme - the corrupting influence of money in politics, the political access and influence afforded the wealthy and powerful, the dismissal and devaluing of science and subject matter expertise, social media disinformation, the dumbing down of the population and lack of basic knowledge, the power of the media, and worst of all, the severe polarization and partisanship of the populace, blindly believing false information from their own "trusted source" of news and information, to their own detriment.
It makes me sad, because it's so true. Objectivity and the pursuit of truth are dying out in favor of partisan driven agendas. This is us and our partisanship at all costs will be our undoing, it's inevitable. This movie nails it.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
An Old School Type Psychological Thriller
The beauty of this movie is the psychological grip it has on the viewer from the beginning. The camera work and shots were outstanding and very compelling. The circumstances the characters experience had me asking, well what would I do? And not really having an answer. The realism set forth as the crisis unfolds makes the movie especially terrifying, because it's a seemingly plausible scenario for an attack. The horror and terror of the movie are the blindness and lack of information, with no idea of who/what/when/where; total confusion for the characters, not knowing what to do next. It's unfortunate that almost everyone, including those with whom I watched the movie, missed the point and didn't care for it. They all missed the beauty of it, because we're all too programmed to want answers and a tidy ending. The beauty of this movie is the lack of answers and information, showing what we would experience in a total technological meltdown, which is frighteningly realistic. The movie would have been ruined with a tidy ending; by leaving us all wanting answers, our imaginations can run wild with possibilities, all of which are terrifying, with no route back to normalcy - this was the point of this movie. Outstanding and well done.
