Pig (2021)
"We don't get a lot of things to really care about"
This won't be everyone's favorite movie. I went into it thinking it's a revenge/rescue mission movie like John Wick or Nobody. It's not. It's a lot deeper than that and the more you learn about Nicholas Cage's character the more you realize this is a character study, one where put yourself in his shoes and reflect on all the obstacles life throws. The biggest theme is grief and loss, in various forms, and choosing to move forward in the face of it.
It is not a happy or action-packed movie. But it's a short film and makes you feel things. I'm primarily feeling sad and probably won't watch it again but not regretting it either.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Unexpectedly good
I hadn't read anything about this movie before seeing it in the theater and I'm glad I didn't. I was hooked and creeped out the whole time. The acting, the cinematography, the story all stick with you after it's over and it's a short film. The ending was well done but I'll have to watch it again to really understand what it was going for as far as the meaning. Pay attention to the details, especially in the beginning because the backstory explains the ending. I expected more action on the possession front but suppose that's for the best because I was able to sleep after lol. Definitely one of the more memorable horror movies I've seen in a long time!
Poor Things (2023)
Great looking movie but not my jam
Everything about the cinematography was beautifully done in my opinion. I was in awe of the attention to detail and appreciated it as a piece of art. It should've been about 40 minutes shorter but was nice to look at.
I couldn't get past the icky feeling of it basically being about a child having a ton of sex. And men knowingly having sex with a body containing a child's brain. A BABY'S brain! Even if years passed after being revived and Bella learned how to articulate and philosophize because she's freakishly smart- what is she, like 2-4 years old? When other characters maybe didn't know she literally had a child's brain, at the very least they were taking advantage of a mentally impaired person because they are attractive and eager to have sex. As a female I support women feeling empowered to make their own choices about their bodies, but a child does not have the mental capacity to decide sex, especially prostitution, is a great idea and I think that's why the ultimate message about liberation was a miss for me. This is not about a grown woman making these decisions.
All that said, I did think the acting was amazing and Bella's character grew on me. I'm clearly still thinking about the movie a day after watching it, so something about it stuck with me. I think it's worth watching but be prepared to say WTF a lot.
Argylle (2024)
Has its moments, but weird and too long
When I realized there was still 30 mins to go I was wanting it to be over. I'm a fan of Sam Rockwell and he killed it. Bryce is charming as always and I love her view on her acting skills being more important than her weight. It's crazy the focus the world puts on leading women in movies needing to be super thin and she proves it's not necessary (I'm mentioning this because she spoke to it recently, probably anticipating people talking about her weight!).
As for everyone else, their acting was also great but not a lot of screen time for any of them. It's misleading the way the movie is advertised, so that was disappointing. I especially wanted more scenes with John Cena & Henry Cavill!! They were fun together and I feel they have better chemistry than Sam & Bryce.
And there's a cat. Not a whole lot going on with the cat as you might expect, but he's cute.
It Follows (2014)
Really wanted to like it
Started off fine but then it was slow, not interesting and not even remotely creepy. It really goes downhill fast. I could have imagined a way better ending with much scarier versions of what "it" looked like. When you do see "it" you're like, 'why?!' The hair pulling/chair throwing scene made me LOL, I rewound and watched it multiple times because I was so bored. And I literally don't understand what the kids were trying to accomplish during last 15 mins of the movie in the pool. The ending leaves you with no clearer of an understanding or satisfaction other than "it" is still walking, slowly...maybe naked, maybe with one boob out, or maybe BOTH boobs out! THE HORROR!!!
Anyways, I guess I recommend it if you're looking for a movie to laugh at while high.
