Migration (2023)
Migration (2023) - A pretty good duck movie
Hey guys, so I wasn't really planning on reviewing this because, well, I didn't really have much to say but I'll do one anyways and let you guys know what I think about this movie. Let's begin!
So, first the story. Nothing much to say about the story, it's all right. It's basically about a father and his family of ducks going out and migrated for the first time, with wacky shenanigans ensuing. Not really the most groundbreaking thing but it's cute and simple.
Next up, the animation. For the most part the animation is pretty good in this. I like how stylized the ducks look in this, and certain backgrounds, like Jamaica and its glowing water looks really good. Even the less beautiful landscapes, like the city also looks pretty good. Also, the little 2D opening at the beginning also looks really cool, I would love to see an entire movie or short done in that artstyle.
Next up, the characters. For the most part, all the main characters are pretty likable and memorable. The only main character who I feel doesn't play that big of a role in the story is the uncle, I feel like his only real purpose is comic relief and to get the characters in trouble and that's basically it. He's pretty forgettable. Another character I'd like to focus on is the villain. The villain is pretty fun to watch. He's not dimming with personality or anything, but i like how the movie decided to keep him silent, makes him a bit more intimidating.
In conclusion, Migration is a pretty good movie, Expecially by Illumination standards. The characters are fun to watch and the environments look beautiful, but I wouldn't say it's the most groundbreaking thing out there. I'd give it a 6.5/10, which means it's not weak enough to be a 6, but it's not good enough to be a 7, so it's kind of in the middle. Thanks for reading!
Barbie (2023)
Barbie (2023) -...not what I was expecting...
So the other day (as of me writing this atleast), I watched the 2023 Barbie Movie made by Warner Bros. Going in, I was expecting it to be fun and maybe a little bit meta, but I was not expecting how meta this movie was going to be. Let me explain.
Before we talk about the story, I wanna talk about the soundtrack a bit. The soundtrack is pretty good not gonna lie. As of writing this, Im currently listening to "Choose your fighter" and that song is great. Not all the songs are amazing (i'm probably going to get hate for this, but "I'm just Ken" is overrated), but the ones that do are really good.
Ok, now onto the story.... the story is weird. Now, going into this I was already expecting this movie to be pro-women empowerment and meta, which I was okay with, but I was not expecting how far they were going to go with it, not that that's a bad thing, in fact I actually love it. I was not expecting Mattel, the company that makes Barbie, to be the bad guys, and i'm surprised they even signed off on that idea. The women empowerment message is also pretty good. It's not your stereotypical woman empowerment message where it's like "Oh, you should be like Barbie, Barbie encourages all that", no they actually question Barbie's involvement in the women's rights movement in the film and I really enjoyed that the movie is willing to look deeper into it's source material and question if the thing they're adapting is as good as people say it is. However, they eventually drop all that in the third act of the movie. Basically in the third act, the story switches gears and it's now about the Kens trying to take over Barbie land. And I basically lost interest in the movie around then since the movie spent so long investing you in the Mattel plotline so when they switch gears to this second plot, I just wanted to go back to the other plotline.
In conclusion, Barbie is a very weird movie. Not what I was expecting, but I kind of love that. I love that it questions Barbie's involvement in women's culture and how they're willing to portray the company that makes Barbie in a negative light, but the movie falls apart during the third act because they completely change plot lines. Overall, I'd give it a 6/10. Thanks for watching.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever (2023)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever - The best of the Disney+ films so far
So originally, I wasn't planning on writing a review on this since I didn't really have much to say but looking back, there is quite a bit I'd like to say about this film and it somehow managed to exceed my expectations. So, what do I think of this film? Well, surprisingly, I ended up really enjoying it. I thought it was just going to be like the other films and just be okay, but no, it was actually pretty good. Let's discuss it.
So first off, let's talk about the animation. These models still take time getting used to, but they feel slightly better in this film in terms of the facial expressions. They still aren't as expressive as other stylized animated films out there, but it looks fine in my opinion. Everything else looks good though, the lighting and shading looks better and there's a cool shots thrown here and there.
Next off, the story. So the story is pretty similar to the books as to be expected, with some minor changes, like how in the book, Greg gets in trouble for hanging posters on the school wall, with the dye ending up getting into the wall, and in the movie, Greg ends up destroying a snowplow, but there are also some pretty big changes. The film takes on a more campy-Holliday special vibe where it basically becomes a "Spend time with your family, presents are about giving not receiving" type of mumbo jumbo, but it's still fun to watch even though it might not have the same cynical nature of the books.
Next up, the characters. First off Greg. Greg is still portrayed as a lot more likeable in this, nothing more to say. He is still a bit mean to Rowley, but not nearly as bad as book Greg. I don't really mind this change compared to most people, especially since in the original cabin fever book Greg's jerk-ish nature was also toned down compared to other books. Next up Rodrick. Rodrick is still fun to watch in this. He is a lot more funnier moments in this compared to his appearance in the other movies, and I like how they kept his character growth from Rodrick Rules where he's still there for his brother when things get really down for him, but he's still going to mess with him whenever he gets the chance. Next up is Hank, who I feel like has reverted a bit back to his live action movie personality with how crazy and overreactive he gets to certain things, like how he is constantly monitoring his family during the snow storm, which was funny and I really enjoyed watching. I don't really have much to say about Susan and Manny, they haven't really changed much since the other 2 films.
In conclusion, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever is a fun little christmas movie. It's a solid adaptation with the books with barely any major changes, the characters feel more fun to watch, and the animation even got a bit of an upgrade. Overall, I'd give this film a 6.5/10. Thanks for reading!
The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday (2023)
The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday - A Short but sweet Holiday Special
So, I just watched the new Bad Guys holiday special on Netflix, and I thought it was alright. Nothing groundbreaking or anything, but it's a solid holiday special. Here's my thoughts on it.
So first off, the animation. The animation is worse than the movie, but that's to be expected since the movie was an feature length movie released in cinemas, and this is a 25 minute special released for Netflix, but the animation is still decent. It's a bit more stiff, but it gets the job done without being too distracting.
Next up, the actors. So another thing changed was that all the actors were replaced for this one, which also makes since considering this was made on a much lower budget than the movie, so it makes sense they can't afford all those actors back for this, so do the new actors do a good job? Meh, they're alright, but they don't carry the same charm as the movie actors. Mr. Wolf is alright, but everyone else just don't carry the same charm.
Finally, the story. I don't really have much to say on the story, it was alright. Basically the whole story revolves around The Bad Guys having to save Christmas so they can pull off their big holiday heist, not the most groundbreaking thought provoking story ever but it is still fun to watch.
In conclusion, The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday is a short but sweet holiday special. It has a simple but fun story, but falls a bit flat in terms of the animation and voice acting. Overall, I'd give it a 6/10 thanks for reading!
Wish (2023)
Wish (2023) - I don't get the hate...
So, I just got back from seeing Wish at the time reading this, and I honestly don't get the hate, I really enjoyed this film. It was fun and amazing, and was overall a fun time. Here are my thoughts and feelings for the movie.
Now, before I get on with my review, I just wanna say that if you don't like this movie, that's okay, you're allowed to have that opinion, these are just my thoughts and feelings on the movie, so keep that in mind.
So first off, the villain. I really enjoyed Magnifico as a villain. My favorite types of villains are ones that are entertaining to watch while at the same time feeling like a threat, and Magnifico checks both those boxes, for example, when Magnifico shows up to Asha's house and destroy her grandfather's wish right in front of her and her family did a pretty good job and making him threatening, but I do have my complaints with him. One major thing is that I wish he didn't get hypnotized. It takes some of the responsibility of his actions off of him since he isn't really in full control of his actions while it's some kind of dark magic force twisting his mind, which holds him back from being the completely evil monster that the writers were hyping him up to be. Second of all, the movie wants you to believe that Magnifico is 100 percent in the wrong for not wanting to grant Asha's grandfather's wish. Basically, Magnifico's justification for not granting every wish is that he doesn't want to grant wishes if they are too vague since they could be used to hurt the town or others if granted. Asha's grandfather's wish was to "Inspire people", but the wish was so vague that Magnifico couldn't tell if he just wanted to inspire people in a positive way or in a negative way, and keep in mind Magnifico has never met this person before so he doesn't know what his intentions could be, so he rejects it. The problem with this is that he is completely in the right in this situation, but the movie wants you to believe he's completely selfish and egocentric for this decision. I know most of Asha's conflict with Magnifico is that he won't give the wishes back to the people even though he doesn't plan on granting them, but the movie still wants you to believe that Magnifico is completely evil for not granting Asha's grandfather's wish even though he has a very good reason not to.
Next up, the music. The soundtrack is just good in my opinion. While all the songs are good, most of them are pretty forgetful, but the ones that slap really slap. Songs like "This is the thanks I get", "This Wish", and "Knowing What I know now" are amazing and I'll definitely be blasting those numerous times, however some of the other sings just don't sound very interesting or have already been done before the exact same in other Disney films. For example, the first song of the movie, "Welcome to Rosas" sounds very bland and has already been done in numerous other Disney films. The song is basically just Asha singing about the town's traditions and hyping the place up, which has already been done in other films, like "Encanto" with "The Family Madrigal", now i'm not saying they can't do that same type of song, but they don't do anything unique with the song so it just feels really meh. One big problem I have with the lyrics are some of the lyrics are pretty dumb. For example, in "This is the thanks I get", one of the lines is "I let you live here for free and I don't even charge you rent", which doesn't really make sense when you think about it for more than 5 seconds. He's basically saying "I let you live here for free and I let you live here for free", so the lyrical writing definitely still needs work
Next up, the characters. Apart from Magnifico and Asha, the other characters are just kind of boring. So Asha has a group of friends that help her with taking back all of people's wishes and returning them to their rightful owners so they can go out and achieve their dreams on their own (which i'll get to later), but they all aren't really that interesting. The only ones I really remember is the one that wears glasses and is always angry, and the sleepy guy because he shows the consequences of loosing your wish and because he ends up selling out Asha to King Magnifico, and even then I barely remember their names. The only notable thing I can mention is that they're all based off the seven dwarfs from Snow White, but that's it, it's a neat little reference at that. The main characters also aren't safe from being somewhat boring. So apart from Asha, the other main characters are a goat named Valentino and a star literally called Star. For the most part, Star is okay. He's basically Disney's attempt to sell merch, but he's alright. He's cute and is a key part in the story, but Valentino... not so much. Valentino really doesn't do much notable in the story and he's not that funny either. He's not the worst character put the screen, but he's a pretty weak comic relief character. One thing I want to point out about Asha though is that I don't really like how she becomes a fairy godmother in the end. The whole point of the film is that you don't need wishes to make your dreams a reality and that it's more fulfilling to go out and do it yourself, but nope, they completely fall back on that message by giving Asha the power to grant everyone's wishes whenever she pleases.
Next up, the animation. Now, I normally don't judge Disney films on animation since ya know, it's Disney you should expect good animation, but since this animations goes for something completely different, I thought I'd mention it. So when the animation was first revealed, a lot of people thought it looked cheap and unfinished, but I thought it looked fine. Yes, it doesn't look as good as other Disney movies but still looks great. This film basically does the whole Spider-Verse art style, but in it's own way by combining 3D with 2D. A lot of people wish they just stuck to 2D, but I feel this animation combination works for this movie since it's their 100th anniversary film, so it's like its honoring their 2D and 3D animated projects, which I enjoyed and I would love to see more Disney films in this art style and improve upon it.
In conclusion, Wish is a great movie and has a pretty good villain, a good, yes flawed message about going out and achieving your dream, a great blend of Disney's 2D and 3D animated films, and a couple of powerful songs, but falls in flat in the rest of the soundtrack, goes back on it's message at the very end, and has some pretty bland characters. Overall I'd give it a 7/10, I really enjoyed it and I feel it's a worthy film to wrap up Disney's 100th anniversary. Thanks for reading!
Good Burger 2 (2023)
Good Burger 2 - On par with the first movie
So, I just finished watching Good Burger 2, and i gotta say it's alright, on par with the first movie. The characters are just as likeable, the plot is just as goofy (if not a bit more) and overall I really enjoyed myself with this. Here are my thoughts and feelings.
First of all, the main characters are still very likeable, and I feel like they're even better now. I love the character dynamic between them now with Ed being chaotic and ignorant to everything around them, with Dexter just being along for the ride. It was really fun to watch, and I feel the humor also improved a bit.
Another thing I want to walk about is the humor. Apart from one fart joke, all the jokes were pretty solid. Now i'm not trying to say that this film is the pinnacle of comedy, niether was the first movie, but there was still a handful of jokes that got a smile out of me, they also went all in with the slapstick jokes, which I enjoyed and felt works with this movie, I'd like to see more of them if we ever get a Good Burger 3.
Next, onto the story. The story is alright. It's stilly and goofy, just like the other one. So basically, this film follows Ed being tricked into signing a contract, giving away Good Burger to Katt Bozwell, who is the main villain and is also related to the villain in the first Good Burger, and wants to fire the workers in the original Good Burger location and open more locations around the world using animatronic versions of Ed. So yeah, a lot more goofy than the first movie, which I like. One gripe I have is that it uses the "character signs contract without reading it" cliche, which is a bit annoying, expecially since Dex was there with him and could have read it for him (i know he was tricked into convincing Ed to sign it due to the money, but I still feel he'd be smart enough to read the contract), but for the most part the story was alright, I enjoyed it.
In conclusion, Good Burger 2 is on par with the first one. The story is just as goofy, the characters are just as charming, and the jokes were just as funny. Overall I'd give it a 6.5/10. Thanks for reading :D.
Leo (2023)
Leo - A solid animated film with Adam Sandler in it
Hey guys, so as of the time of me writing this, I just got down watching Leo and I gotta say it was good. I have a couple problems with it, but it has a good message about listening to others and opening up about your problems. Allow me to go more in detail
First off, the characters. I felt like all the characters were pretty well written and all have their own character arcs, goals, etc., which is nice and makes them stand apart from one another. My only complain is that their names are extremely forgettable. In fact, I think they only said their names 3 or 4 times. The only characters' names I remember are Leo and Squirtle and nobody else.
Second off the songs, I didn't really like them all that much. All the songs are extremely forgettable and just feel like generic pop songs made to boost soundtrack sales, and they don't really serve much to the plot. In most movies, they use singing to easily convey the character's emotions to the audience, but in here they're pretty much pointless since the characters already tell Leo they're emotions, removing all the point from the songs, so they're kind of just there, and what also doesn't work is that most of the characters don't have very good singing voices, especially Leo since his voice clearly was meant to be goofy, so he just sounds bad when singing.
Now let's talk about the story. I felt the story was pretty good. It's a good story about living your life to the fullest and helping other's, but there's some pretty noticeable plot holes. One major problem is that they just pick and choose when the other kids can hear Leo and when they can't. For example, at the start of the movie, when Leo and Squirtle are ranting about the other kids in the classroom, nobody can hear them because they're inside their cage, even though Leo and Squirtle can still hear the teachers and kids talking through their side of the cage, so it's not like the cage is sound proof or anything, and then later on in the movie, when the kids confront Leo about him talking to other people, the kids can clearly hear Leo even though he's still inside his cage, and this isn't just some nitpick because this is clearly crucial to the plot, so I wish they ironed that part of the story out a bit.
Alright finally the jokes... they're alright. There are couple jokes that got a smile out of me or maybe a chuckle, but that's about it. The only joke that made me laugh was the scene where the teacher sees all the kids faces as Leo, and i'm not even sure if that joke was intentional or not. This movie also has a couple pop culture jokes, like when the bus driver is singing "whip nae nae", even though this movie was clearly in development in the 2020s whereas that song was popular all the way back in 2015, i mean it didn't ruin the movie for me or anything, it was just kind of cringy. This movie also has a couple of.gross out jokes, which even though they aren't my thing, don't ruin the movie or anything since they go by pretty quickly but I just wasn't a fan of those jokes.
And that is my review of Leo, overall a pretty solid film. It has a great message and some well written characters, but the music numbers and some problems with the story brings things down a bit. Overall, i'd give it a 6/10, thanks for reading!
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023)
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - A solid film for Kids
Just finished watching the Paw Patrol Mighty Movie. And I gotta say it's a solid movie. Here are my thoughts on it
So first off some positives. The animation is just as good as the first movie and 10 times better than the show, second the soundtrack is pretty good. Not something i'm gonna be blasting 24/7 but it gets the job done, thirdly, I really liked Skye's backstory. It was really emotional and well done and shows off her determination well.
Alright, time for the negatives, one thing that really upset me is that they just completely forgot about the villains after they were defeated. So the Mad Scientist lady ends up getting defeated by the Paw Patrol and Liberty ends up using her stretchy powers to hold onto the scientist so she can't escape but then when they show all the other pups giving their crystals to Skye, she's just no where to be seen, there's no scene of her in prison, no post credits scene showing what happened to her, she's just gone. Same thing with Mayor Humdinger, he just completely vanishes from the plot after he's defeated. There's no scene showing what happened to them afterwards. I know they say they're going to jail but I'd still like to see it, but atleast Humdinger didn't just vanish from thin air like the mad scientist lady
Another negative I have is with the crystals. They're basically never explained. The crystals come from the meteor the ends up destroying the Paw Tower (which i'll talk about later) but they never really explain much from that. Like why does the meteor give the PAW patrol super powers, where did the meteor come from? Is it from another planet? I don't know because they barely explain it, which I wish they touched upon more.
My last problem with the film is that they just completely forget about the Pup Tower being destroyed, which I feel was missed potential and could have been used to drive the characters forward, but they just never bring it up again, which is underwhelming. Like, they mourn the loss over the tower for like 10 minutes, but then Rubble makes a wacky joke and everyone just forgets about it.
In conclusion, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie is alright. Kids will definitely enjoy it, and fans of the TV Show will also get a kick out it, overall i'd give the movie a 6/10. Thanks for reading.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023)
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - Amazing Show, just one problem...
So, before I start this review, let me just say I haven't read a single Scott Pilgrim book. I watched the movie years ago and have the video game downloaded, but never played it, so ill mostly be judging this show as it's own thing.
So, I watched the entirety of Scott Pilgrim: Takes Off, and I gotta say it's really good. The animation is amazing, the action is great, and it's overall a great show, however this one thing brining it down a bit.
So basically the show starts off as a typical adaptation of the movie/books, but after the first episode, Scott ends up getting "killed off" for the majority of the show and the show switches gears from more of a action show to an mystery story driven show staring Remona, which I do like how it's a different story and it treats itself as an alternate timeline, but the problem is... the show is called "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" not "Remona Takes Off", so it was disappointing not getting to see a lot of Scott Pilgrim in the show, not to mention that the episodes without Scott just feel a lot more slow. I'm okay with them getting rid of Scott for a bit, but it should have only been for like 2 or 3 episodes, not half the show, nevertheless i did enjoy the last 2 episodes though, they were really amazing and wrapped everything up nicely.
In conclusion, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a really good show that brings in a new experience, even if Scott isn't in most of it. It is still really enjoyable, episodes 3-6 were just kind of slow in my opinion. Overall, i'd give it a 7/10. Hopefully if they decide to make a season 2, Scott will be more present in it.
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023) - An Amazing FNAF Movie, but an okay horror movie
This movie was amazing! The animatronics looked amazing and story wasn't nearly as complicated as I thought it would be while still leaving things up in the air for people to speculate about. However there are some complaints I have with the movie.
One thing is that the movie is goofy as hell, expecially the scene where Mike is tazing the cupcake and the cupcake just launches at him, it looked incredible goofy, however not all the goofiness in this movie was bad imo. For example, i loved the scene where Mike, Vanessa, and Abby are making a fort with all the other animatronics. I know it isn't very scary but it's cute seeing the animatronics act like kids since they are still kids trapped inside animatronics.
Another gripe is that I wished the blood looked a bit better. Don't get me wrong Im not asking for a complete gore fest, but the blood looks a bit too much like Pizza sauce in my opinion, I wish it was a bit of a darker red.
Anyways, now let's get back to the positives. Springtrap or William Afton is amazing in this movie. When i found out Mathew Lillard was voicing William Afton, I was really excited since he also voices Stu in Scream and he was also amazing in that movie and he doesn't fail to deliver in this film either! He does basically kind of feel a bit like a cartoony villain in the way he talks but I feel like it works for him considering how he's portrayed in the silver eyes trilogy, which this movie takes a lot of ideas from, like how mike looses a younger sibling, similar to how Charlie lost her younger brother. The springlock scene was also handled very well, its not a complete gore fest like everyone wanted, but this still manage to get across how brutal it is to get springlocked without showing any blood.
Another thing I loved was the 8 bit opening at the beginning of the movie. It's simple and gets across how William lured the kids and the artstyle is pretty acurate to the minigame artstyle in the games while making the artstyle a bit more detailed.
There are also some pretty creepy scenes in the movie too, like when Bonnie and Chica stands in front of the vent as the cupcake goes through was pretty creepy and the little torture thing Mike and the first security guard gets strapped too was also pretty cool, but I wish we actually got to see more of that machine in action since the first time they show it, it cuts away before the death and the second time, Mike easily gets out of it. It would have been cool if it was a springlock suit head and Mike had to carefully get out of it, similar to the bit in The Twisted Ones where Charlie had to carefully get out of Twisted Freddy. It would have also been a cooler way to introduce the springlocks compared to Vanessa just telling him about it.
Anyways those are my thoughts on the FNAF Movie, it's a pretty goofy movie but also has a lot of creepy moments that'll keep FNAF fans entertained, for people who are just horror movie fans and don't play the games, it's just okay. Not the scariest thing ever, but there are still some creepy moments to scratch that horror itch, just don't expect Scream or Saw levels of horror. Ima give the movie a 7/10. I def can't wait for the sequel where we hopefully get to see the marionette!
