If Clark Ashton Smith wrote a full-length novel
14 January 2024
First off, if you understand that reference, then hats off to you. If not then that's okay. I went into this movie completely blind, borrowed from my library, grabbed well enough by it being a feature length adult animation. I won't lie, the rotoscoping really put me off at first, and some of the voice recordings are really poor quality, but it's a project that believes in its vision. The more I realized that it was meant to be not just an homage to, but an actual continuation of 80s dark fantasy art and Weird Tales magazine storytelling I became deeply invested. Granted, I am a nerd for those things, but I find them to be something desperately deserving of a comeback. It makes me really happy to see that there are at least enough fans of it to put together something like this. I only hope going forward that this won't be the last time we see those elements put together like this.

That one Black Mirror episode, but not as good
12 October 2023
If you've seen the episode of Black Mirror titled 'Fourteen Million Merits', then you've seen this movie already. If you haven't, and are considering watching this movie, watch Black Mirror instead to save yourself the time difference.

The themes are simply not to put work before family and warning against giving your all for a company that sees you as disposable. There is a very ham fisted theme of consumerism, as the main character has to suffer through advertisements playing in his cell, despite him possessing no buying power in that position. So why are there ads? Very little logic there.
