Doctor Who: The Curse of the Black Spot (2011)
Overhated
I think this episode is alright. There are a lot of reviews that call it forgettable or the worst in the season, but it's really not that bad. It's fun filler! It doesn't need to have some big purpose or meaning. Maybe I am swayed by nostalgia because I loved it when I was younger, but I really do think it's a fine episode. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it's an episode about pirates being stalked by a siren doctor in a show about an alien with a time machine.. it's not going to be perfect. It has plenty of fun adventure, funny dialogue, and alien nonsense near the end. Overall this episode doesn't deserve nearly as much of the hate as it seems to get.
Doctor Who: Day of the Moon (2011)
Pretty great
Day of the Moon is a very well rounded episode. It has a good, although slightly convoluted, plot and further explores all of the characters. Firstly with Amy's pregnancy and her not telling Rory which sort of ends up resolving his insecurity in his relationship with Amy. I'm very glad they are finishing up the plotline with Amy and the Doctor being all flirty, I was not a huge fan of it. Also River and the Doctor. I love their relationship and, in my opinion, she just gets better throughout the series. This is where she starts really being likeable and becomes a real "companion". It's somewhat bittersweet though since we already know how her story ends. Overall, a pretty interesting way to start of the 6th series.
Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder (2023)
Genius
THIS is what I love from Doctor Who. I loved the horror aspect of this episode. It was just so well done. It's so much better than the first episode and I'm just so glad. After the first episode I was satisfied but still nervous for the show's future, but now I am just so relieved. Everything about this episode is just so brilliant, especially the performances from David Tennant and Catherine Tate. I think them being the only people in the episode (excluding the first and last scenes) was brilliant. The isolation and mystery is just so amazing and the buildup to the ending is perfect. Can't wait for episode 3.
Doctor Who: The Star Beast (2023)
A little on the nose
I never finished the last few seasons of Doctor Who, but I know this is better. It's definitely not perfect, but it's the start of something better. The beginning was a little rushed and weirdly done. There were a couple scenes that were VERY on the nose with the gender aspects, but I think that'll get toned down as the episodes go on as it was an introduction (hopefully..). I did love the new theme song, it feels very fitting for the new era. For me the standouts of the episode were Donna and her mom. There was a nice buildup of Donna getting her memories back. Obviously there are definitely some tweaks that should be made, to make the viewing experience nicer (and a little less cringy), but I'm happy with the shows return.
Doctor Who: Victory of the Daleks (2010)
Could be worse
Victory of the Daleks is a solid story for furthering the Doctor's ongoing battle with the Daleks. I do think this episode is way more hated than it should be. It's definitely not terrible, but also not outstanding. I think it falls through in it's climax but is excellent in the emotional scenes with Bracewell. Both Karen Gillan and Bill Paterson really are amazing in their scenes together and this episode does a great job at further showing Amy's human contribution to the show. After having a very "human" doctor with David Tennant, Matt Smith is more alien-y and, in my opinion, needs a stronger human, rational mind in the TARDIS. Amy (so far) is perfect for this and is almost pulling the Doctor along. Anyways, it's pretty good but is brought down by the actual plot. Could be better, could be worse! 7.3/10.
Doctor Who: Smith and Jones (2007)
Great starter
Smith and Jones is an excellent start to series 3. It does a great job of introducing Martha and her family dynamic, which becomes important later. It also is just fun. It brings back that mystery and excitement you felt in Rose, where everything starts again. The Doctor is still heartbroken from the finale of series 2, but Martha has lifted his spirits with her charm and smarts. Martha always was my favorite companion and her work in this episode really exemplifies that. She does so well and makes herself important, not just another scared freaking out doctor in the hospital. Her being a doctor also presents a very interesting dynamic, making it so that she can really help and prove herself in the eyes of the Doctor.
Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride (2006)
Charming
The Runaway Bride is a good mix of chaos, perfect for the damaged Doctor coming from the tragedy that was Doomsday. Catherine Tate is amazing in her first episode, so good that she comes back again in season 4. Her and the Doctor mesh so well and are just so funny. The comedic value sort of makes up for the odd pacing and plot. My main gripe with the episode is that it's just not very christmas-y. For a christmas special, I expect green and red and presents and stuff, not just a wedding and a big red spider. I think with just a bit more tweaking, it could have been way better, but, honestly, it's fine as is. Not perfect, but charming nonetheless: 7.8/10.
