Bhaji on the Beach (1993)
Impressed me- a definite 10/10!!!
I wasn't a fan of Chadha's more recent movie Bend it like beckham, which I cant stress enough just does not at all match up to the quality of this film. Old certainly IS gold, as Bhaji On The Beach clearly demonstrates, focusing on the variety of problems faced by the many characters involved and not just one leading character's problems. This is certainly what makes the movie interesting at all times. Everyone has their own issues in which to deal with and not a single uninteresting second goes by. Theres always something that holds your attention, makes you laugh or sympathise with the character(s) concerned. The combination of the excellent, upbeat dance-orientated music (which was dominant at the time in contrast to today's rubbish), colourful scenes of Blackpool pleasure beach, humour and grim reality makes this a film definitely worth watching. I urge any one interested in this genre of movies to watch this. A fantastic film that whole-heartedly deserves 10/10. It's a shame they don't makes movies like this anymore.
Spatz (1990)
Nice kids comedy
I didnt actually watch this until its re-runs in the mid-1990s and although I can only manage to remember 2 of the characters (one of them, an American woman), it was incredibly funny enough to keep me glued to the TV set every Saturday afternoon at the age of 9, so i would naturally recommend this to kids. Good stuff.
If Looks Could Kill (1991)
One of those great, funny early 90s teen films
I remember seeing this on cable about 10/11 years ago and I watched it with my Dad and brother who both found this hilarious and still do now. This is one of those classic, fun-to-watch comedy films of the early 90s that you wont get bored of unlike today's trash! Its right up there with the Ernest series and Father of the Bride films. If u want a good laugh for an hour and a half, watch this. An original, humorous plot featuring an American class (which is something to common to that 'Saved by the Bell era') in France. They should really start making more movies like this! Kids will ACTUALLY enjoy it.
Go rent this NOW!
Final Destination 2 (2003)
Excellent sequel, one worth definitely watching
Well what can I say? Pure Brilliance! Thats what! If you are going to watch this film, make sure you watch it at the cinema to get the full effects. I didn't really like Final Destination when I saw it on video last year, although the plot itself was good and I could see why it was hyped up. I went to see this after seeing all the endless adverts for it and was clearly surprised. Not only did they manage to get a better sequel, but the death sequences were the best I had ever seen in quite a few films. Although the ending was far too predictable, it must have been the first horror film I have seen that people were actually laughing and clapping too. Dont get led astray that this is a funny-all-for-laughs film though, as there were some scenes that the got the whole audience shrieking out! Who cares about plot holes or editing when you've got a film like this that keeps you on the edge your seat almost the whole way throughout? An excellent film. 9/10. This should surely be considered to be in this year's top 10 movies even though it's only February!! This is better than The Ring by the way.
Out of Control (2002)
Excellent. Truly brilliant masterpiece.
This excellent program should have been extended and become a film instead. It would have done brilliantly. It was an indie program and therefore, the camerawork wasn't exactly at its best. But that doesnt matter at all, when the plot, characters and acting is SUPERB.
This film totally and truly sums up the life of youngsters on Britain's streets in 2002. With the ever-present news of rising crime in the UK these days, this film gives a true picture of life in Britain. The real eye-opener was the actual youth instituition itself.
A bully boy inmate torments a young 15 yr old, who becomes psychologically affected. It will make you sometimes laugh, with very memorable quotes, one including: "Newboy, come to your window and sing me ba ba black sheep!" watch it, and you will understand. But from laughter, it will bring you tears as well. Gauranteed.
Definitely one to watch. Every British person should watch it.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
One of the best films ever made
This film has got to be one of the best films ever made. I first watched this back in 1993 when I was 7 years old, but I rememeber that it was soooo huge, that even 2 or 3 years after it had been made, people in my class were still going on about it!!!! I honeslty don't know any other film (with a possible exception of Titanic) which was remembered so well for years after it was made. The special effects were and STILL ARE great. The good thing I liked about this film was that director James Cameron didn't swamp the entire movies with digital effects unlike the rubbish over-used effects we see in today's US 'blockbusters' like Minority Report, which was so bad it's not even worth mentioning in this report about a good film. The acting in this film is brilliant and there are funny one-liners and phrases like "ASTILA VISTA BABY" which everyone remembers. This is one of those films which you can play when you invite all your friends over and they still wont complain as it is truly excellent. One of the best movies ever made. Obviously much better than the first movie, and a rare excellent sequel. A true classic. Well done Mr Cameron.
The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
Absoloute rubbish
this is an absoloutely rubbish boring film, filmed rubbishly, not even scary AT ALL, u dont see the mothman, the plot seems to disappear half way through, and it is just another US horror film isnt even scary...they waste money hiring expensive actors like Richard Gere and Deborah Messing but it doesn't improve the filom..if u want horror and want 2 b scared, go and watch Long Time Dead..it is soo much scarier and will absoloutely make u jump
Spider-Man (2002)
Absolute Rubbish
What is it with Hollywood these days? They seem to be making boring films or resurrecting old comic book heroes etc. What happened to the days when we had Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sly Stallone and Bruce Willis? Now they were good actors and starred in good films. These days, all Hollywood seem to do is put a bunch of 'famous' people (who are rubbish) like Julia Roberts or Brad Pitt into films and waste a few billion dollars investing in special effects and it seems that the movie is a hit. Spiderman is no exception. It is a ridiculously boring film, the main actor Toby Macguire should not have been given the part and the thing that makes it bad is the fact that it uses about 1 billion special effects every second! When will directors ever learn? It doesnt make it look any good..it just makes it look a whole lot worse and MUCH less realistic. Films like Terminator 2 were a hit success not just because it used groundbreaking digital effects, but it didnt swamp the whole film with them. This is what made it, (and still now after 11 years) so realistic and pleasing to watch. Spiderman is a waste of time and money..why do directors seem to think that just because they waste all their money on effects, that the film will be a hit? Well, the only reason why it did well in the USA was because Spiderman had been a legend for 100 years and people waited for the movie to come out..that is the ONLY reason why. In the rest of the world, (UK being a main example), it got bad reviews and i just can't wait until this 'spiderman fever'(that's targeted for 10 year olds and the director being stupid enough to make it so violent it is rated 12) goes away. Don't waste your money on this trash. Be sensible. See something else.
Long Time Dead (2002)
Long Time Dead is the best horror film there has been out for ages
Long time dead is one of the best films that the UK has done in ages---and quite rare as well, as we never seem to make horror films. This film however, is the biggest exception, and it is ABSOLOUTELY BRILLIANT, as it is a million times much better and more interesting than american teen horrors, which have become a bit dull over the past few years. normally horror films dont scare me-but this one made me jump a couple of times. i like the way that the scenes are shot (especially when the 'demon' (djinn) is chasing each of the group of friends and the atmosphere is totally frightening and sinister. It is so good to see us British people doing these type of films for a change--that is what made it really 'new' and a bit more intersting than all its american counterparts. it follows a typical american teen horror (about a group of friends all bein killed of one by one)--but it does it REALLY REALLY well. My congratulations and praise to the director who should have won an award for the film. I can't wait for the video or DVD to come out!
