Old (2021)
Loved the concept
The problem is that with a really cool concept that seems on the surface to be fairly simple, but winds up creating a ton of questions that cannot all be answered in the intreat of timely storytelling. Thus....plot holes. Lots of them. There is an attempt to explain some things but oh many the number of questions I had. I guess if you watch it and can leave out a lot of what we "know" as humans then it could work. Very well. But for me there were just too many questions that weren't going to get answered. I'm okay with a few loose ends at the end of a film but this was frustrating for me.
Like "awesome concept! Let's shoot it! Oh wait we have to think about these things!! There's too many. Okay pick and choose what we explain".
Cool. Maybe would have been better as a limited series??
Violet (2021)
The EXACTLY perfect film I needed to see in my life right now
This movie is so similar to my life events over the past year and a half to 2 years. With the exception of no "Red" figure in my life this film really resonated with me. This none foes pretty damned deep. If you let it. Thank you for this film.
The Stand In (2020)
Wait! It's not what you are expecting!
I expected a specific type of film given the movie poster and title and nature if a great number of Drew's films. It's soooo very different than that. This diamond is a black comedy mixed with a bit of some 80s films and a dash of weirdness so when you go into that knowing it's not a rom-com you enjoy it much more. Very odd film but enjoyable.
Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton (2017)
Beautiful and Profoudly Brilliant
I have only vague recollections now of some of Andy's sketches and characters on TV while I was growing up. I guess at the time I never was interested in him or that kind of comedy. I was only about 6 or 7 after all. But after watching, I found myself developing a better understanding of who Andy was. I'm still not sure if he was or is my thing. But what I found even more interesting was Jim himself. His thought processes are at times equally brilliant and insane but it all comes out making perfect sense. I found his creative process equal parts irritating and frustrating but always entertaining or thought provoking. I can also see why Jim seems to have encountered a great deal of heartache where his love life or some relationships may be concerned. I would imagine it takes a certain degree of confidence, humor, massive trust and understanding without ever taking it personally or doubting yourself or your relationship. I imagine knowing, appreciating and loving Jim means being completely open and surrendering to the Universe. To always try and live in the moment and learn. That means that you have to be willing to accept that your relationship, in whatever form that exists, may not be what is considered "normal" or even "acceptable". And I expect Jim learned this about himself during this filming process perhaps more profoundly than with any other filming process. I found him fascinating. I appreciate his honesty. You can view this documentary superficially and see that its quite good or you might hate it. Whatever the case, its incredibly interesting if you really watch and listen. Either way its very interesting. But I recommend the deep dive.
FBoy Island (2021)
Wait...what?!?!
I expected this to be a typical reality island hot stuff show but toward the end of the first episode I started having my suspicions that this is a scripted comedic stab at those exact shows. Which if so, is so much more brilliant and will definitely change my rating. Once I figure it out I will update!
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Definitely Different but Fun
This definitely could have been a movie for sure. This series at times seems to take itself seriously or just when you think it does, it throws in extreme absurdity in some very entertaining ways. Definitely enjoyable.
Scream (2022)
Enjoyed the Hell out of it!
Aside from some issues I had with some of the dialogue, "Scream" is a solid fun, scary film that definitely keeps you guessing. While I wasn't 100% satisfied with the ending I enjoyed everything else and my grievances were petty. Nice soundtrack. I found it suprisingly emotional as well which I hadn't experienced with any of the other "Scream" films. I think Wes would have approved. Definitely enjoyable!
Malignant (2021)
Enjoyable and Different!
I really really enjoyed this film. It was uniquely weird and disturbing. Feels like a combination of Chronenberg meets Carpenter. My only real complaints are that towards the end it looked and felt like a video game to me. Some CGI felt weird since I love practical fx. Although trying to pull this off practically only would be a real challenge. Overall I though James Wan did an excellent job of bringing us something new. It like he took a lot of disturbing creepy things and mixed them in a bowl and created a fantastic horror dessert.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Shocked
I was shocked by how bad this was. Lifetime movies are often better than this and that's not saying a lot. Very disjointed. Bad writing. The acting was rough too but what can you do with a script that is that bad?! I watched the entire thing as I was astounded how it went from bad to worse. It is like they started intending to make a decent film and then when they realized it was going downhill they just hit the gas pedal....
Down to Earth with Zac Efron (2020)
Absolutely FANTASTIC!!
This series is amazing. Lots of wonderful knowledge. It's also very endearing and wonderful to see Zac so enveloped in the different environments and with the people he meets. Well done! I adored this series. A breath of fresh air in such uncertain times.
Floor Is Lava (2020)
Nope.
And can we talk about those triplets!?! Or rather not....Definitely cringe worthy...but those triplets....
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Brilliant!!!
I knew about 5 minutes into it that I would want to watch it again right away...
The Outsider (2020)
Brilliant!
The writing, the directing and the acting are superb. Just the originality of it all is incredible. You definitely feel like you are watching something familiar, for lack of a better word, and then it flips the story on its end making it a truly unique and fresh adventure. It's brilliant and I am so impressed with this series.
Knives and Skin (2019)
Like a Fever Dream
Indeed this movie "felt" like "Donnie Darko meets Twin Peaks for me. It's a very unique film and if you dig deep you'll see it's composed of consistent metaphors. If you want to see something unlike anything you've seen, this film definitely fits the bill.
Channel Zero (2016)
Enjoying this show!!
I'm a horror junkie and a 30 year special fx makeup artist so you could say I'm pretty desensitized to horror films and shows but I can honestly say that there was something in every season and every episode that actually creeped me out. I would LOVE to see more of them!!!
Searching (2018)
Excellent!
Highly recommended. Engaging and the cast was wonderful. Just when you think you've figured it out...you don't.
