Hazbin Hotel: Masquerade (2024)
Finally, a great episode
Only 9/10 because the uh... Porn stuff could've been toned down a bit. But both of the songs were actually good this time. I actually heard Poison before watching and didn't realize it was basically Addict 2.0 but that makes sense.
It was a great idea to delve into Husk's backstory this way, and having him and Angel bond over making terrible choices was very enjoyable. Husk's VA is also a great singer, which really helps. This episode also finally had a joke that Made me actually laugh ("wait, they're out here singing?? Get em!")
Again, the early part with Poison and Valentino probably should've been less graphic, but at least they put a trigger warning.
Hazbin Hotel: Welcome to Heaven (2024)
Well, that happened
Ok so... Positives: heaven wasn't just full of more jerks like Adam that literally have no difference from the demons. The angel designs were interesting enough. The second musical number reincorporated "Hell is Forever," which was nice.
Negatives: the first musical number was boring. Why is St Peter the only human-looking person in heaven? Why does Cherri have a terrible accent now? Why does Sir Pentious obsessed with her??
I like the design of Sera but like... Vivzie has shown in Helluva Boss that she can reference existing demons- so why are the Seraphim just... Generic names? I know that Sarah is a Hebrew name but it's not like... An established angel name.
Also, way to go reusing the whole "we'll use Angel Dust as our flagship resident" segment from the pilot. I guess it arguably went better this time?
I can't comment on the twist because I accidentally spoiled it reading Vaggie's wiki. And now I understand all "the Good Place" comparisons: no one knows how heaven and hell selection work. That final musical number should've been like... Peak tension but I was just bored so...
Also, why does Emily just instantly trust and side with Charlie? That seemed way too easy.
Hazbin Hotel: The Show Must Go On (2024)
Could've been perfect
Strong episode overall, but definitely would've benefited from being two episodes- that would allow more time for the battle and the resolution (instead of squishing it all into one musical number). I did like the idea of showing Vox et al watching the battle, but it did end up hurting the flow of the action a bit.
The first musical number COULD have been good, but I swear it was literally sung over a Casio demo track?? Once I noticed that, it was super distracting and made it sound cheap (not unlike the intro and ending song). The second number was a fairly typical musical resolution/reprise song, so nothing much to say there.
SPOILER PARTS
Charlie's Dad (because he's a weak "Lucifer" but a good character) really came into his own and was enjoyable to watch- although him showing up was a little too "Avengers."
I am very glad to see that Adam is, in fact, person shaped and is just wearing horns and a mask. It still doesn't make sense that he was an angel, but whatever.
I don't know WHAT I expected the Lilith reveal to be, but "she sold out all of hell to relax in heaven" was not it. That was a twist, for sure.
Hazbin Hotel: Hello Rosie! (2024)
Great episode
All right so we finally get Rosie. Love her, tho not the voice I expected for her, it totally works. Carmella got another appearance and her song was ALMOST good, but it still feels like the VA isn't confident in her singing. I do like Carmella as a character, tho.
But cannibal town- fantastic. The banter between Alastor and Rosie was great. Susan was great. I personally didn't like that musical number but it was fine from a technical standpoint. I also like that cannibal town got like... REALLY into it and Charlie was like "ooh dear."
I do feel like this season is a bit too rushed? It looks like next episode is the last one and it would've been nice to have more just... Sinners coming to the hotel naturally (like, There's no narcissists in hell that believe they SHOULD be in heaven and want to lie about redeeming themselves?).
Hazbin Hotel: Dad Beat Dad (2024)
Great episode but uuuugh
All right- I had a Lucifer phase growing up so I'm VERY particular about depictions of him. Not surprisingly... I don't like this Lucifer. To be clear... I like him as a character but I HATE him as a "Lucifer." I do gotta say tho- do they only have one "powerful male demon" design? Slender, triangle shoulders, suits with coattails, cane... Come on.
I do love that Alastor is finally showing the evil psychopath side. That's what we loved about him in the pilot.
The musical fight over being Charlie's father figure was 10/10. Top tier. Mimzy was also pretty funny, and provided some backstory (although it is a recap).
I personally didn't care for the power ballad about dreams but it was.... Fine.
Hazbin Hotel: Scrambled Eggs (2024)
Plot was interesting. Music.... Not so much.
Once again, this is the kind of stuff I wanted for the series- goofy shenanigans with the hotel staff while expanding on overlords introduced in the pilot. That part was great. The Eggbois were also great.
That being said- and, apparently, I'm not in the minority for once- the musical numbers in this episode were just.... Not good. Carmella's VA doesn't seem to really find her singing voice until halfway through the second song (which is basically an entirety in musical terms). Velvette's section was decent, but the whole song was unnecessary and not enjoyable in the slightest. They just HAD to hit that 2 musical number per episode quota.
So like... Genuinely, maybe put the songs on mute or skip them. Then it's a great episode.
Hazbin Hotel: Radio Killed the Video Star (2024)
Much better than episode one
I'm relieved that this episode was not as tortuous as the first one, so that's nice. Animation quality stayed consistent this time and both Alastor and Vox had some nice effects.
I was not expecting Velvette to have a heavy accent but that worked for her. Vox was not the voice I expected, but it does kinda have a "late talk show host" vibe so that works (not sure why they picked someone who can't sing tho). Sir Pentious was passable- not amazing but close enough to the original. Valentino, however.... Was just off. Not BAD, but not the right vibe for him.
The musical numbers were just... Ok. I liked the first one more, but it had a REALLY rough start before it got good. The second one was decent- generic musical fodder- but I did like Nifty being like "wow, I hated that."
So, there's room for improvement but this is more what I had expected from the show based on the pilot.
Side note: I previously mentioned planning a Sir Pentious cosplay. Because of that, I happen to know that Vivzie said in a live stream that if she were to redesign him, she'd make him more steampunk. Now, he has goggles. Steampunk achieved /s (but in a more nitpicky note- they're not even brass or copper. They're the same color as his hat. So like, genuinely bare minimum effort on that redesign lol)
Hazbin Hotel: Overture (2024)
It's just fine
I've been watching Helluva Boss and waiting for Hazbin but it was just... Not a great opening episode. Speaking of, the literal opening of the episode was very generic (maybe they figured it didn't need effort because people would skip it).
The new voices are... Acceptable. They're fine. I was distracted by Vaggie because I was hearing Rosa (Brooklyn 99); and both Alastor and Vaggie felt toned down- less personality in the performances. Meanwhile, Angel Dust was turned up to 11- which was a mistake.
Also, with the exception of the musical numbers and Alastor's shadows, the animation was really stilted and choppy at times. I'm not sure why so many people are saying it was amazing. It feels like 90% of the money was put towards the voices/music.
Personal preference alert- I hate musicals. The music was fine- the second song was ok- but they did not add to the episode at all. We just groaned and watched for anything interesting in the animation.
*Spoiler section (maybe?)*
I knew, from the moment CHERUB was introduced in Helluva Boss, that I was going to have a problem with how Vivzie would do the executioner angels. Somehow, that was worse than I expected- the angels are just as sex obsessed and vulgar as the demons. And I get it "what if angels were the bad guys?" Is a popular trope right now, but there is a REASON they're typically depicted as pompous, stuck up, repressed, purists- that's what makes sense to distinguish them from the demons that are all about sex, drugs, and rock n roll. "Oh but maybe there IS no difference between angels and demons" yeah sure, cool. Maybe like... Foreshadow it instead of making the first angel awful? Ffs.
The addition of the "ticking time bomb" element is wholy unnecessary for the premise. But "monster of the week" stuff isn't popular anymore so guess we're doing that now.
*Spoiler end*
Anyway, I'm willing to watch the next episode, but I'm not optimistic. I gotta keep watching to figure out if I should finish or scrap my Sir Pentious cosplay.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Cool Concept, but mediocre over all
Expanding on the most boring part of the Dracula story but from the crew's perspective wasn't a bad idea, really, but this was just... Fine. The use of a Nosferatu style vampire was nice, I suppose. I actually did like the only survivor becoming a vampire hunter, even if that's silly.
My biggest issue is that, with the information the crew had about the afflicted victims bursting into flames, and they're own observation that the creature only attacks at night... Why would they decide to scuttle the ship at night? If they scuttled it during the day with all their oil to light the ship aflame, then they could've won (also, they didn't even scuttle the ship?).
Now, I'm aware that they CAN'T actually win because, you know- this is a midquel story- but in that case, the writers should've just lost the victims becoming vampires themselves (that was a little too Evil Dead, honestly) so it wouldn't seem weird that the crew most... forgot about the sun light being helpful.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Mouth Quest (2015)
This is easily the best episode
I love this episode. It's great when the show decides to do something totally different artistically. The story is the perfect combination of "basically no plot" (eg, an "and then something else happens" story) and complete absurdity. We go from watching the product placement within the show, to the animator leaving and the characters being alive. It is a little weird that the product mascot is aware of the contract that, presumably, a person actually made, but you gotta just roll with it. Don't question it. It's fine.
The live action section at the end was hilarious and I highly recommend watching it without spoilers. 10/10.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Handbanana (2006)
I'm disturbed by the 9⭐ rating
Look, I remember the early aughts- an edgy time when other's feelings didn't matter and ret*d and f*g were funny. So with that in mind, I can excuse the show referencing r*pe as a joke prior to this episode; but here, r*pe is the whole joke.
Pro tip: r*pe is literally never funny.
The premise of the episode itself was funny. "Oh, let's just use this ancient computer program to make a dog." Hand-banana itself is funny. But then his whole shtick is r*ping Carl. That's it. That's the joke. Then Carl tries to make a guard dog and that one r*pes him, too. Haha, so funny /s
It sucks because the episode WOULD be funny if Hand-banana was tormenting Carl in literally any other way- identity theft, attempted murder, Literally anything else. I genuinely don't understand why other reviews are like "r*pe isn't funny, except here."
WHY is it funny here? Because the r*pist is a glove dog and that's absurd? Because the victim is an a$$hole pervert?
I don't know how to end this except that I'm disgusted that THIS is the highest rated episode.
