Doctor Who: The Star Beast (2023)
Not perfect, but the Doctor is back after the bad Chibnall time
Many things work very well, the look, the style, the music, the humor, the effects, the actors and also the individual ideas are interesting. But this episode simply wants too much. Telling what has become of Donna and her family, introducing her daughter Rose, dealing with discrimination, trans identity and how a family deals with this issue. Oh right, there's still the main storyline with various new aliens to be introduced and their history, a plot twist and a dramatic finale. There should also be plenty of emotion and fan service and a clear message. As a result, a lot of things fall short and the message is told rather inelegantly, which is a shame because it would be important. But it should have been done cleverly. If they can do that more elegantly in the future and take more time, I can see the series returning to its former strength. The potential is there. I'm optimistic after this solid start.
Sex Education: Episode 8 (2023)
Surprise: Netflix can end a show well after all. A great finale that fits perfectly with a show that questions conventions.
The Season had its problems and it had taken on too much. Too many themes and too many new characters and settings. And we not speaking about the Eric Messiah Moment... But the Season has again brought many wonderful moments and is very well done.
Now to the last episode. It brings together all the open endings. Not to a finale that solves all problems.
It does not deliver the ending that many wished for. But that is what this series wanted to teach us from the beginning. Life and love are not what you expect: Not everything turns out the way you want it to or the way it usually is in romance movies. It's complicated, sometimes confusing, sometimes sad, sometimes bittersweet, and sometimes beautiful. That's the lesson. That was Sex Education about. And so its ends.
