Mayor of Kingstown (2021)
It's like when Rachel made the trifle dessert in "Friends".
She mixed a sweet English trifle and savoury beef pie without realising.
That's what this show is like.
Someone who likes shows like The Wire , Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Ozark etc, and saw how successful they were, took a little of this and that from each of those shows and just threw it all together into the big, senseless mess that it is.
Here the summary: A bunch of guys comprising a cop, a prison warden, some other "officials?" and some unemployed man with an office and busty secretary, are the judge and jury of criminals who commit moderate crimes. They cry more when random cops die than when their own brother dies and they have very vague and senseless conversations with gangsters and each other. But dont you worry, they look extremely cool while doing so. There are some random unrelated strippers, drugs and killing thrown in, some mention of FBI and C. I. here and there. But basically, EVERYONE LISTENS TO THE UNEMPLOYED MAN WITH THE OFFICE and busty secretary. Ok? Everyone.
Bliss (2021)
Very deep
If you have never or never known anyone who has struggled with addiction and/or mental illness, you may find yourself confused with this movie, picking at "flaws". This movie is an eye-opener. Great work.
The Fourth Kind (2009)
The attempt to scare and succeed is what's brilliant about it!
A word of advice before watching this movie, DON'T RESEARCH IT.
Many movies have been made in the "found footage" genre and we've eventually found out that none of them were actual events. Likewise, many movies have been made based on actual events, but are fabricated for the sake of entertainment, or just not accurately depicted.
At the end of the day we have to remember, we are watching a MOVIE. What's important is HOW it's made, it's effect on the audience. Movies are, after all, a major component of the ENTERTAINMENT industry.
That said, this movie chilled me to the bone. I didn't research the authenticity of it's "true story" plot before watching it and that scared me all the more! I could hardly sleep the night I watched it.
See, that's the very thing that's brilliant about this movie; it was made to seem so real, with "actual footage" and "re-enacted scenes" shown, which achieved what the movie was meant to; SCARE THE AUDIENCE. Together with awesome special effects and sound, this movie is just at the top of the line in it's genre. It's original, it is bloody scary, and BELIEVABLE. There are so many unexplained events similar to those depicted in this movie that still happen in the world today. So not only did the writers make it believable, they rode on the fact that such events are also VERY POSSIBLE.
This was a 9/10 for me. Highly recommend it!
Noroi (2005)
Not scary AT ALL!
Don't believe those who say this movie is scary. IT IS SO NOT.
I gave it a pass only because it had good acting and the plot did get interesting in a couple of parts.
But as a horror movie, I'm afraid, it has failed.
You don't see much and what you do see is not scary. It just left me annoyed and wanting it to have been done differently. This movie could have been good considering the original storyline. But nope, didn't work, not to me and I'm sure other avid horror fans like myself, would agree.
Let me put it this way. I didn't like The Blair Witch project. Truth be told, it's way over-rated, and i feel the exact same way about this movie. So if you loved the Blair Witch, you'll love this. And if you didn't, don't bother with this one.
Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes (2012)
Good idea, not so good movie
I gave this a 3 out of 10 only because of 3 reasons: 1. The actors are pretty good, considering I've never heard of them. Their emotions were believable and they even managed to pull off some intentional comedic moments that actually made me laugh.
2. There were a couple of moments that shocked me. However, it was more the result of sound effects that played at the right moment after some minor suspense, than anything else.
3. The idea for a twist was there but sad to say, it wasn't done any justice with the direction and special effects of the movie. In the end, too much was left unseen and unknown and for the little that was seen and known, it was too senseless for the imagination to make anything of! And the special effects? It's practically an oxymoron because there was nothing special about them, really. I think what will shock you the most in this movie are these "special effects".
Let's just say the 1970's budget horror movies called. And they want their EVERYTHING back.
Frozen (2010)
This movie didn't scare me, it made me ANGRY.
Angry at how stupid the kids were and for the continuous stupid things they did throughout the movie.
I guess that's what makes so many people like it. Because in reality, people that stupid actually exist and will do the exact same stupid things these kids did.
This is NOT like Jaws. It does NOT make you feel terrified for what might happen next to the poor unsuspecting kids. It'll make you think, "Good, they deserved that for being so stupid!" Watch it if you would like to see the likes of someone placing their hand on a hot iron, knowing it's hot.
Absentia (2011)
It deserves more credit than it's been given.
This movie is not perfect. For those who expect perfection, you'll be hard to please with this one.
I've read some negative reviews and many of them seem to be harping on how the lead actress is pregnant when her husband has been missing for 7 years or whether the events that transpired are supposed to be mere hallucinations of her younger drug-addicted sister. These things are definitely clarified in the movie, so if you find yourself being bothered by such trivial matters, you probably weren't paying attention.
The scary/horrifying moments are good; some of them did send shivers up my spine. The possibilities of what caused the horrific events are explained, and it's a phenomena that is in fact discussed in the real world. So its not entirely a senseless fantasy.
Yes there are moments that seem unexplained, but again, with enough attention paid, you'll be able to figure out why this character was doing that or why that character said this. In a way, this movie reminds me of Rosemary's Baby, in that much is left up to your imagination; no in-your-face creatures and gore. BUT this is definitely MUCH BETTER than Rosemary's Baby as just the right amount is revealed to terrify while just the right amount is left a mystery, for added suspense and thrill.
In my opinion, it worked. I'd give this a 6 only because the soundtrack of the movie bothered me a little. But it deserves a 6.5. I mean Rosemary's Baby annoyed the crap out of me for too much was left unknown and unseen. Yet that's got a whopping 8/10. Give this movie a shot.
Emergo (2011)
A poor excuse for a movie.
The writers of this movie and whoever has given it good reviews must've been on some kinda substance. I'm a true horror fan and I'm pretty lenient with my reviews but this..............
So apparently this widower and 2 children (who somehow look Hispanic while he and his wife couldn't be whiter) move away from a haunted house into a haunted apartment. Assuming the "spirits" have followed them, he calls in some paranormal investigators.
Some cliché scary moments are thrown in here and there, perhaps in an attempt to lead the audience to believe the dead wife is haunting them. So its made to seem like a GHOST is involved. AND THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT POINTS TO IT BEING A GHOSTLY HAUNTING in pictures and videos etc...
Next thing you know, the "paranormal investigators" second guess the whole haunting, claiming it to be something completely unrelated to ghosts and spirits, supposedly the "twist" of the plot.
When i saw the ending, sure, i jumped out of my seat... because of how RIDICULOUS it was! Little did I know that medical related problems (I shall not give away too much) can cause WHIRLWINDS in your house, strong enough to suspend a human being in mid air, while blowing SAWDUST (don't ask me where this sawdust came from.. maybe it came from their.. scalps...??!!) all over the place! This movie is so senseless it makes David Hasselhoff's singing career look brilliant.
American Horror Story (2011)
Bloody Brilliant!
Here are a few reasons why I love this show:
1. NO POINTLESS SCARES. Like closing the medicine cabinet and oh there's someone in the mirror behind her who wasn't there before! But oh its just her mom saying goodnight... The scare scenes are truly horrifying by what's appropriately meant to horrify.
2. CREEPY AS HELL. The content is absolutely creepy and it stays with you longer than unnecessary "shocks".
3. INTELLIGENT PLOT. The horror genre has lost its intelligence of late and this show has brought it back. There are pieces of the puzzle to put together, thinking, analysis, perception involved. From what I've gathered, the series links several stories based on actual horrific events that happened in America (hence American Horror Story). These stories had absolutely nothing to do with each other but the writers have made it in such a way where it flows smoothly and interconnects. Difficult to pull off but it worked beautifully!
And on top of all that, the special effects are fantastic. Not to mention some hot & heavy scenes to spice things up! ;) I gave it an excellent 10/10. In my opinion, its even better than The Walking Dead.
The Shrine (2010)
Great effects & suspense but...
This movie had great effects, make-up, acting and had just the right amount of suspense. The story line is very original and it scared the hell outta me! And i am not one to be easily scared by horror films since The Exorcist.
But as others have also mentioned, the dialogue in the other language (which i think is supposed to be Polish) spoken in this movie has no subtitles for viewers and though this is intentional, probably to create more suspense in viewers, i think it could have been done differently. They could have structured the conversations in a proper language differently while including subtitles for the audience, such that the audience would still be kept in the dark even if they knew what was being said.
The poor reviews are definitely from people who are from Poland or who understand Polish. Again, they could have done this differently by engaging a Polish interpreter to enable real conversations in Polish and even by using a setting that really exists in Poland.
Other than the above couple of screw-ups, this is a great movie for fans of demon-curses-horror movies but only if you DO NOT understand Polish. I rated it 9 coz i feel its underrated, but for what it really is coz it couldn't be otherwise, I'd give it a 7 or so...
