Nine Inch Nails Live: And All That Could Have Been (2002)
One of the best audio experiences you can get..
If you're going to buy or rent this, grab the DTS version. I greatly enjoyed this DVD on my home theatre -- the sound totally immerses you; various people on stage sound like they're in front of you playing while the audience roars behind you.
The packaging is cool, yet minimalist. The little Reznor written inset is a nice touch. You may go through all the menus and think, "I thought there would be more extras." There are more extras: they're mostly hidden. Probably the hardest one to find is the (in)famous Manson performance with Trent which originally showed they'd set aside their differences. You have to press enter towards the end of "Starf**kers, inc" (after the "well, f**k you..." line).
Overall, a great addition for any fan's collection. The sound of the songs, quality digital encoding, and extras all add up to a great release.
The Time Machine (2002)
Nice special effects, weak story.
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** The start of this movie simply tries too hard. Alexander (played by Guy Pearce) is setup to be an absent minded professor. To emphasise that he's both learned and special, the movie spends the first 10-15 minutes bludgeoning you with inventions and references (such as Alex's correspondence with Einstein, ignoring the fact Einstein was still in Zurich university in 1899 and wouldn't become a patent clerk until 1902).
* Spoiler bits * Then the hero's love interest dies, and he spends years obsessing over her. Naturally, the time machine comes out of this. After that we get some nice special effects, and meet Orlando Jones, and then are flung into the far future. The far future, though, seems to be in danger. Alexander forgets immediately his private quest to save his fiance which has driven him for 4 years, and settles in to do some hero work. The only problem is that, being a time machine movie, Alex avoids the most obvious solution to the problem of the far future -- changing the near future.
* End spoiler bits *
A short, average hollywood movie with a larger than average plot-hole and reality-inconsistency ratio. It's good for the special effects and Orlando Jones.
Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse (2001)
Recycled material with lame filler and a lame gift.
If you've ever watched the hour-long "Magical World of Disney" show which had various Disney cartoons from the 1940s through 1970s played, you'll be familiar with what this video is. The exact same stories shown the exact same way with a grand total of 3-5 new minutes of wrapper animation (with different voices than the segments, as well as poorer quality animation) make this one to avoid.
The tape does include a little cardboard stand for a picture of some kind, but that's not really worth the money spent on this. Go get Monsters, Inc instead -- your family will thank you.
