Royal Crackers (2023)
Not what you expect in the best way possible
This thing . . . It should be featured on the wikipedia page of "underpromise, overdeliver".
From the looks of it, you expect a mild family drama but what you get is . . . I'm not even sure how to describe it . . . Everything . . . You get everything.
Every episode is a minefield where you are genuinely excited about the next click under your foot.
Characters are 3 dimensional, flawed each in their own understandable ways, with more of the past being revealed each episode.
Creativity is intense, abundant but also somehow not "spray and pray", it's focused and disciplined.
I'm not sure what I'm more curious about: what's gonna happen next, or how long the creators will be able to keep up this fire hydrant of a show.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (2024)
It lacks . . . soul?
There's a lot of stuff going on at any given 15 second interval and there's considerable creativity and attention to details, but overall, it just doesn't work.
I'm forcing myself to watch it basically, and I don't know why.
Overall has a vibe of a female med student's self-insert power fantasy that, imo, very few people are likely to resonate with.
Basically if Dr. House was split into two young females, neither of them very likable.
All the character flaws/weaknesses seem superficial and don't have much effect on anything really.
The whole setting also doesn't communicate that there is really anything at stake. Like at one moment all of them might die and I just cannot summon an ounce of Fs to give.
I wish it was better, but it is what it is.
Grimsburg (2024)
Too shallow for it's setting
Ofcourse I've only seen one episode so far and it's not unheard of for things to turn around really quickly, but I'm writing this now so that maybe the feedback would be considered by the creators.
I think there are basically two approaches to mainstream-ish cartoon comedy:
1) Flat premise in which surface level comedy happens (Simpsons, Family guy, etc.)
2) Deep-ish, specific setting, in which the deep-ish specific comedy can occur (R&M, Bojack, etc.)
This however, is a deep-ish specific setting with extremely flat, surface level humor.
I'm not sure whether it's just a very odd combination to me, a specific person, or if it truly doesn't work, but I do wish they would build up momentum/depth before the punchlines.
Pantheon (2022)
_
I have no words with which to summarize it with.
It touched my strings which have not been touched so long, I almost forgot they existed.
Some people care about the graphics, some about drama, some about special effects, etc. I usually care about the soul, and that, this show has to spare.
That and a punchline to put all punchlines to shame. Seriously, one of the best ever, out any piece of media I've ever seen, heard, read or witnessed.
It gave me an internal drive to somehow find extra ways of rewarding people responsible for it, as a motivation for even sliver of a chance of making something similar in the future.
