Shaun of the Dead (2004)
see this movie!
I must admit, I'm a big fan of British comedy. It's a nice feeling and gives you a chance to see what's out there other than American comedy. Both have their strengths...and their weaknesses. "Shaun" will usually make you have this constant smile on your face as the jokes just keep coming. You get the sense that the creators of this zombie-fest wanted to get this right. Want to laugh? Want to have some dramatic scenes that help build character development so you actually care for actors? (trust me, you need this in a good movie) Do you want to be scared? And do you want to laugh? My, oh my does this deliver. For an added bonus for you hippies out there, see it high or sneak in a beer. You're going to love the next 1.5 hours of your life. References to the latest British zombie flick "28 Days Later" make this a beauty.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
solid disaster flick
From the director of Independence Day (which is sadly probably his best movie), we get the world vs. humanity. Who will win? Who doesn't? Does it matter? Do you care? Well, you certainly don't care too much b/c character development just isn't there but you will certainly enjoy the film. If you're looking for entertainment, this will deliver. If you're looking for smarts and great acting, go see Kill Bill before it's kicked out of theatres or even that new documentary "Super Size Me". You will enjoy yourself secretly at all the destruction and probably yawn when the politics comes in (dont' worry, you get very little of it). Vince gives this 7/10 simply for the visuals and the little boy inside me that wants pure action without explanation.
The Punisher (2004)
I'll never get back those 2 hours
I hope people take my advice to stay away from this movie. Every line is so overacted and predicatable. The action isn't even that good either. At the beginning, I hoped that the cheese factor was only in the family scenes (assuming that the writer was an action-movie writer and was still weak on the emotional scenes), but it continued on. Travolta was like a stone wall throughout the entire movie and decided to act only towards the end (and even then I cringed to watch).
Please do not see this movie! I turned to my friends 3/4 through and asked if they wanted to leave. Believe me, the best part of this movie are the trailers. Vince's rating: 4/10 (the fight with the Russian was the only part of the movie worthwhile, "raising" the bar to 4)
Timeline (2003)
actors insured the death of this
The diretor should've known better. He did the Leathal Weapon series and knows how to make decent action films. Perhpas he wasn't ready for a larger movie about France during the 100 Years War.
The movie was an adaptation of another Michael Crichton novel. Albeit not the best novel he wrote in recent times, the movie could've been a marvel. When I first saw that Donner hired Paul Walker for this, I immediately assumed that the director was going for action, not acting. The rest of the cast simply felt compelled not to exceed Walker in his acting attempts (or perhaps they aren't even capable to doing, either is believable). Gerard Butler, who played Marek, was the only interesting character in this movie. Everybody's reactions were weak and wrong. They simply weren't believable. This movie is a could-have-been AND should-have-been.
Vince says 6/10 - for the attempt and the occasional interesting modern-day scenes (the trebuchets were also interesting)
Something's Gotta Give (2003)
funny but...
...this movie is just so damn long. As you leave the theatre after over 2 hours of film, you wonder just why that movie took as long as it did. Then you think back. Too many useless scenes plague the movie and it just keeps going on and on. The ending is simply impossible. I give it a 4/10. Without Jack, this wouldn't have made it into pre-production. The only funny parts you already saw - in the commercials.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
why was Smith laughing???
And when the Oracle changed into Smith, why was the original Smith afraid? And here is Vince's contribution to all of this: I realized that the third installment was held up by two scenes (of which are the battle for Zion and the Neo vs. Smith fight) and everything else was pretty much filler, but overall, it was one hell of a flick. Could've done without Trinity's speech at the end though. Just a tad cheesy. Again, please someone! Answer my questions!
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
great movie
Nice to see that such a lovely movie about the Greek culture could be made in such high spirits. I saw it with my mom, thinking I might be the only type of guy to go see this type of movie with, and I was surprised to see that other guys were doing the same. There were tonnes of families in the theatre. It proved that this movie struck a cord with audiences because of its wit. The only disappointing factor lies with IMDB. It's not on the top 250 list although it meets all requirements. Despite IMDB not recognizing it, go see it, it's great.
The Time Machine (2002)
Not long enough
As I have not read the book or seen the earlier version, I do not know how far off the movie treds from the book. BUT, the movie is wonderfully crafted together. Needs a little touch-up on the graphics when time marches on but you can handle it. For what it could've been (something even better than say, Stargate), it should've been longer to get some more character-depth and reasoning into the movie. It was too short and that did the movie harm. If that doesn't bother you, it's a great movie.
Loser (2000)
Sucks? What?
Yep, this movie really really sucked. Waste of time, money, space, film, effort, thought, and one cheesy career. Do not watch this movie, buy this movie or anything of the sort. If you feel that you must punish yourself, watch this movie . . . sober.
Exit Wounds (2001)
Horrible movie!
What else can you say? Horrible acting by all, not funny (sorry Tom Arnold), stupid story, bad acting, too many mistakes, obviously filmed in Toronto, not Detriot, and oh yeah, bad acting. Gotta give it credit for actually being considered as a movie, but nothing else.
Blade (1998)
a convincing vampire tale
However closely the movie is to the comics, it doesn't matter. This movie radically moves away from the boredom of "Interview with the Vampire" (although it's acting was good) and slides in the wonderful action scenes. Very convincing tale and interesting with surprisingly good acting from all. Disadvantage - poor graphics. Does it matter? Nope.
True Lies (1994)
2nd only to T2
Compared to T2, it lacks action and intensity, but is made up for in its comedic characters. Amazing movie and highly enjoyable for a laugh and some action. James Cameron directs? Only means one thing - it's good.
Mean Machine (2001)
Yes, the comedy is like "Snatch"
Despite the poor/rushed editing job that seems to slice and dice the film, you've got plenty of humour. The first part of the movie is dedicated to show you the failed football pro (that's soccer to you North American folk) set a game up between guards and cons, the second part is the game, which is alone worth $10 to see.
Heist (2001)
A poor attempt? Yep.
It seems like the great actors thought they had a good script. Too bad it was just as drab as "The Score" which also had unbelievable actors in it. Want a good heist movie? Check out John McTiernan's "The Thomas Crown Affair."
