Regular Show: Lift with Your Back (2014)
Mordecai (and by extension, Regular Show) at its worst
By far my least favourite episode of Regular Show. After covering for Mordecai so he can spend time with his girlfriend CJ, Rigby comes to the realisation that all of the people around him see him as useless and without Mordecai, he'd be nothing.
Rigby quits as a result of this and gets a job at a moving company.
Mordecai is almost completely out of character here. He is much, much worse than usual and treats Rigby like garbage. He has zero self-awareness and even has the guts to ask Rigby to cover for him again even AFTER Mordecai laughs at Rigby for quitting.
This episode just boils down to Rigby being laughed at and bullied by the main cast, with the only saving grace being Eileen being her normal excellent self throughout the episode.
It also doesn't help that the main joke of the episode (the various back puns) wears thin within the first few seconds and just doesn't stop all the way until the end of the episode.
Almost every episode of Regular Show is a 7 or above, but this one is just not good at all. The only episode of Regular Show I'd recommend you skip is this one.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
A slow burn with a pretty good pay-off.
World Beyond is different, but that is not inherently a bad thing. It has its own identity separate from the rest of the Walking Dead Universe. It delves into the CRM and their involvement in the US and also has some relatively good characters that only suffer from some weak acting and some awkward and cringeworthy dialogue.
Despite both seasons having a very slow start, the second half of both seasons pay off their individual stories in such a way that makes the slog of both first halves worth it.
It isn't the quality of the original series, but don't disregard World Beyond because it's different. It has a unique feel that feels pretty refreshing. Once you get past some of the bad acting (namely the main two sisters), it can be a very charming and at times - intense and well-paced experience.
A more accurate number for me when it comes to World Beyond would be a 7.8/10. It's a solid show with some big flaws that is still ultimately worth the watch.
Upper Middle Bogan (2013)
An excellent show from the start, with a poor final season
The first two seasons of this show are some of the best Australian TV I've ever watched. A lot of heart, love and humor right from the getgo. Easily worth a watch for the first two seasons alone. However, I feel like a majority of the third season is painfully unfunny, depressing and mean-spirited.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this show up until the third season and I recommend both for casual viewing. Very entertaining and a great, accurate representation of Australian culture.
My only gripe with the first couple of seasons is Bess' husband Danny. From the getgo, his character is a selfish jerk to his wife and his children. And throughout the show, he never had an ounce of character development. There were multiple times where he was outright abusive to his family and it became uncomfortable to watch.
Especially with the season three premiere. It's Danny at his absolute worst. And the total lack of consequences for his actions is also a massive turn-off for me.
I'd rewatch this show in a heartbeat, but only for season 1 and 2.
9/10 for Season 1 and 2.
5/10 for Season 3.
Aggretsuko (2018)
A flawed, but charming show that starts slow, ends poorly but is worth watching for the first three seasons.
Although off to a bit of a rough start with the first season, like lots of shows, Aggretsuko struggled to find their footing. But by the end of the first season, they had me hooked. Then the second and third seasons had my eyes glued to the action from start to finish.
The fourth season - honestly - was terrible. But the fifth season made up for it with better writing, although the series finale felt incredibly rushed, abrupt and unsatisfying.
The comedy and writing is what truly sells this show. How it's able to balance relatability with excessively ridiculous and unrealistic situations is nothing short of excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed how the relationships were handled in the first few seasons in particular.
Despite these shortcomings, Aggretsuko is honestly worth the watch. Especially the first three seasons, but perhaps not the following two.
