The Silencing (2020)
Below average revenge porn
The plot is full of holes you could drive a truck through, the so called protagonist suffers from wooden acting and no motive is clearly given for the killer. No explanation was ever given for the signature way the killer marked his victims. The protagonist gets stabbed, shot with a gun and shot with an atlatl, yet still has the strength to carry a young woman at least six miles on his back. The interplay between tribal and county government is alternately stipulated, then ignored, as convenient.
The screenwriters were apparently so concerned with laying down red herrings and play twists that they forgot to tell a choherent story. I'm sorry that I wasted 90 minutes of my life (plus the time to write this review) on this film.
L'uomo senza gravità (2019)
Sweet film in the magical realist style
The Man Without Gravity is on one level a simple story of childhood first love that later blossoms into a mature relationship. But along the way the film makes some astute, even cutting, observations on the character of village life, the rapaciousness of the TV and publishing worlds, and the ways in which people can be judged unfairly without bothering to really discover who they are.
This film is a treat for those who don't switch off their brains when they sit down to watch. It SHOWS you more than it TELLS you, and it does not rely on cheap thrills or gratuitous violence to stimulate an emotional response. The script is spare and the pace is brisk, but the actors are all very good and they keep your interest with their humanity, while avoiding pathos.
