A World Without (2021)
A good film that could've been made into a series
The acting wasn't the best but it's still overall a good movie. But I feel like the plot was too rushed which leaves so many unanswered questions. I've always been an adventurous person when it comes to films, mainly Asian cinema. This was recommended to me after watching 'Photocopier' (Indonesian: Penyalin Cahaya) and it also features the same actor that played Hafiz. I would've rated it higher if it wasn't so rushed and that Netflix would've extended it to at least an 8-episode miniseries. The only thing I can say is other than the acting, I do adore the nice and modern setting (since this is supposed to be sci-f), the beautiful Indonesian language and environment.
Miss Bala (2011)
I wish I could've seen this one first
I should've watched this movie first, but unfortunately, it wasn't widely known enough for me to know about it. I've always seen the trailer for the American remake in 2019 and I decided to finally watch it last summer 2022, and I enjoyed it. From there, I found out it was a remake of this movie. Then recently, at the beginning of this month, I finally decided to watch it. It started off good but then it got boring, I almost fell asleep twice. But I still made it to the end. I think this is one of the only times where a remake is better than the original, or maybe if I watch the original Miss Bala first, then my rating would be higher. The acting was great in both films but there's is a lot the 2019 film has that the 2011 film was lacking...
Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022)
I will never watch again
Before watching on Hulu, I heard the movie sucked very bad, but still I decided to watch because we all have different opinions and I usually don't read reviews first before watching a movie. The movie starts with an almost elderly couple (maybe early 60s), that scene was almost similar to scene from the first movie...I immediately thought the movie was going to be good, it includes an actor Dee Wallace, she acted very popular films The Hills Have Eyes, E. T., and Cujo, she's a good actor. But unfortunately, that scene ended right there and moved into present day, onto different characters...looking at the young and not-known actors, there was no need for them to say or do anything, I just knew right there the movie was gonna be terrible. This was the worst acting I ever saw, especially Imran Adams, the black actor that played Chase. As a black man, he did not sound like himself, the way he spoke and his choice of words, it just sounded too weird, he lacked Ebonics (or African-American English) which is something very common in movies and in daily life. Also the entire makeup and body movement of this creeper character (obviously not Jonathan Breck) was so bad. I'm never watching again.
Banged Up Abroad: Fighting Yaba (2022)
Something I wasn't expecting
I watched this episode this morning and It was just okay, it could be better. I am a fan of the movie "A Prayer Before Dawn" (starring Joe Cole) one of my favorite films of all time, I watched it several times way before this episode was aired. The movie is based on a book by Billy Moore, but I have not yet read the book. It feels like watching the movie or reading the book before watching this episode is not a great idea, because you usually expect more but it was the opposite. Whoever watches this episode but haven't watched but planning to, you are so lucky because theres way more thrill in the movie, the episode was very different and less thrilling. I will have to buy the book very soon. The episode overall was great but I will just stick with the movie.
Thai Cave Rescue (2022)
I cried; The best series I've seen this year.
Before watching the movie Thirteen Lives, I watched the series Thai Cave Rescue on Netflix. After watching it, I watched Thirteen Lives. I love both but I prefer Thai Cave Rescue, Here's why:
The series on Netflix is seen from the boy's and the coach's perspective, also the boy's families and other Thai citizens. The movie is shown from the rescuers' perspective, more specifically, the divers that are from the UK and Australia. That means that less Thai was heard in the movie, and more Thai was heard in the series. In the series, we got to see and know a lot more about the Wild Boars, the coach, and his heroism. But in the movie, there was none of it. The movie was good, but it wasn't as encouraging and inspirational as the series. For example, on the series, when some of the rescue team got permission from the farmers to flood their crop fields (so it would be easier for the divers to save the boys), at first most of the farmers refused, but one stood up and said something underlines like "...we can regrow our crops, but we can't regrow these boys..." That was one of the most heartfelt lines in the series. My point is that I didn't hear anything like this in the movie. One thing I disliked in the movie was that one of the divers (from the UK or Australia) disrespected Thai religion and culture. Other than the rescue plan, I also took in the beautiful scenery of Tham Luang Nang Non and all of Chiang Rai especially in the series, I would love to visit one day, since I already I study the Thai language and love the culture and history. I cried while watching both the movie and series, I was crying and cheering with the rescuers and locals when they saved all the boys.
After watching, I did my research and knowing that this rescue got worldwide attention, Thailand got the help from hundreds of divers from around the world and it was on every news broadcast, the team being widely recognized in the sports world (football (soccer) specifically), being on major talk shows like Ellen...All that being said, I really hate to say that I was not aware of any of this at the time...I was literally "blind and deaf", and that upsets me. As of now, this is all new to me...
This is best series I came across this year, this #1 in my books. And I will also watch the other films/documentaries that are based on this incident.
RIP to Beam Papangkorn Lerkchaleampote, who played Coach Eak in the series, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He was only 25-years-old, he was a talented actor with a heart of gold. Gone too soon.
The Belko Experiment (2016)
It was good but upsetting
It was good overall, but it was something I wasn't expecting. Everything was going well at the beginning, but it quickly changes after employees were getting killed with explosives implanted in the back of the head. So, most of them were forced to turn on each other: some ran, some stayed hidden, and some had killed showing no emotion. For months, I always scroll past this film on Tubi, but I didn't think much of it, and I thought it be lame. What actually made me decide to watch this film was Melanie Diaz, she's beautiful and a good actress. I had to watch it after hearing she has a role in this movie. When I turned it on, I discovered more actors I know, so I knew it would be more interesting...Now, back to Melanie Diaz, she plays a character named Dany Wilkins...throughout the movie, I was rooting for her, hoping she makes it out alive. She was very smart from the beginning, doing the only thing that was safe to do: hide, (and possibly hope her explosive doesn't go off, (It wasn't clear if she was aware of them)). I was glad she made it far in the movie and what happened next is something I was never expecting: Barry Norris (played by Tony Goldwyn) had shot and killed her. I got so angry and upset, I just wanted to turn the movie. But I just decided to finish the movie since it was about 10 minutes left. But not only Dany, I was hoping some would make it out like Peggy, Leota, Roberto, and Evan.
