The Garfield Movie (2024)
Good but underwhelming
I was pleasantly surprised by the sweet messaging of the movie, but that is shadowed by the films constant attempt at humor, most of which falls flat. It tries so hard to be despicable me with dumb jokes and slapstick where if it had tried to be sincere instead of comedic, I believe it would have succeeded.
The beginning was jarring. There was no reason for the narration and 4th wall breaks. I later found out that the cringe opening scene only existed to set up the drone pay offs, which was another one of my gripes. If it started at the kitten part without all the unnecessary dialogue it would have been WAY better.
Horror in the High Desert (2021)
Eh
All in all a fun little film that was recommended to me by a family member.
The segments with Gary filming were actually pretty good. The rest of the documentary style footage seem very low quality, like a really cheesy film from the 90's, but not in a good way. All in all, the pacing in the movie wasn't great, which was frustrating because there was some interesting pieces there.
The finale was awesome and by far the only moment in the movie that made me sit up and go "wait a minute". It was good but unfortunately, a solid ending cannot make up for a lackluster beginning and middle. Also I didn't think the sisters performance was great.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
Not Good
Exactly what you would expect. I don't understand the obsession with taking beloved characters and having them embarrassed and overtaken by new and absolutely insufferable characters. Most of the characters that you have grown to love over the last 3 movies are absent, with limited appearances from shifu and the dads.
Awkwafina's character really drags down the film. It's obvious what they are trying to do and it just didn't work. The charm and magic is gone.
It suffers from the same thing that shrek 4 did. They tried something new to spice up the formula but it failed to capture the magic over the predecessors.
Honestly you can skip this one and be fine.
Hell House LLC (2015)
Surprisingly good!
Although somewhat hampered by a chaotic ending. The movie delivers a terrifying ambiance that is equivalent to the Blair witch project or paranormal activity. This is a perfect example of a found footage film done right.
I felt as though the build up was better than the actual pay off which was a little disappoint but a fun experience nonetheless. Although not perfect by any means, I was sitting at the edge of my seat and hooked in from beginning to end... so I would call that a successful film. I will definitely be watching this one again in the future and would recommend anybody who likes a good scare to do the same!
The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
Exactly what you'd expect.
The title says it all. Boobs and blood... what else could you ask for in a slumber slasher? It's quick paced and mindless fun.
Quite predictable but sometimes that's okay. Like I said, you can pretty much guess the premise, plot, and finally just from the title of the movie. I cannot state this enough... it is exactly what you think it is.
Like black Christmas, the movie has a killer with no overarching connection to the victims or important backstory. He is literally just a guy who escaped from prison to go on a rampage with a power drill. Overall I enjoyed the 75 minute slasher flick. Gets the job done.
The Unraveling (2023)
Surprising and kept me guessing until the end
A STUNNING, WONDERFULLY SURPRISING THRILLER, "THE UNRAVELING" KEPT ME GUESSING AND FULLY ON THE HOOK UNTIL ITS JAW-DROPPING CONCLUSION.
The cinematography is perfect, and not once was I taken out of a scene because it felt low-budget. The characters are well fleshed out, with top-tier performances across the board.
Topics such as grief, loss, prenatal insecurity, suicide, and disability are all shown from Mary's perspective, but we get enough interaction with him to see how it affects him as well.
We have a psychiatrist who gives us much-needed exposition, explaining the situations and stakes without it feeling forced or rehashed. It's a clever way to explain complicated issues to the audience, such as Mary's inability to make eye contact with her husband.
Christmas in the Heartland (2018)
Spare yourself the suffering
Absolutely awful. This movie has the incredible ability to be contrived and predictable like a typical hallmark movie while also lacking the charm and watchability. It's an hour and a half of pain. From the romanticized version of way too clean rednecks to the 2 dimensional snobby rich people with a black servant it is just a slog to watch. Sierra's performance as Kara will give you a headache and make you want to drown your suffering in eggnog, but NOTHING will take the horrific memories of this movie away. This movie will haunt you until the sweet release of death finally ends your suffering.
