Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons (2020)
Childhood Animation for Adults
Based on the first episode, it isn't the most original of concepts, but it does what it sets out to do admirably - provide the fun of classic animation, but geared for adults, continuing DC's reign when it comes to animation.
Knives Out (2019)
A film so good, I got my family to watch it too
Rian Johnson makes a 'Agatha Christie/Clue' hybrid with aplomb, with the plot holding up to multiple viewings and post-viewing thoughts.
The cast is positively perfect, and you can tell how excited they are to be in this film. Each character spits out their lines with immense pleasure.
It was so good, I managed to get both my Father and Father-in-law to watch it, and they both loved it (former is a movie buff, latter hasn't watched a movie in the cinema in 15 years).
Jìyuántái qihào (2019)
Frustratingly awful
The film is one of the most beautiful animated films I've ever seen, but that's the only thing that's good.
The plot is immensely dense and hard to follow, even to someone like me who understands Mandarin and Cantonese. There was no consistent protagonist, the narrator was intensely condescending, and the film delved into some strong issues without providing any closure.
Judy (2019)
Well-balanced with a spectacular performance from Renee Zellweger
Renee Zellweger stuns in this Judy Garland biopic, making the over-acting part of the intense experience, and making her impossible to look away from.
The humanity behind the legend is showcased phenomenally, with the film making most characters grey instead 'good vs bad'. It's also a stunning look at gaslighting and the Hollywood experience of child actors.
The Addams Family (2019)
For the Kids
You know how every modern film seems to drag on too long? You needn't worry about that with The Addams Family animation, which hurtles by at a speedy 80-minute runtime. Is this a good thing? It could have been, except for the choice to focus on a regular 'oddball characters' plot over character development worthy of such a famous family.
