Babylon (2022)
A polarising fever dream
This film is a masterpiece. Illustrating the soaring highs and the brutal lows of a glitzy, grimy and often depraved 1920's Hollywood. Damien Chazelle delivers to the audience a decadent and dazzling tailspin of events surrounding both ends of Los Angeles, in a stunning contrast between hungry up and comers and establishment executives and actors. We witness the rise and fall of the lives on screen so palpable you can feel the energy and excitement fizzle into turmoil and pain, in a rapidly evolving film landscape. The locations are gorgeous, the music serves as a heartbeat through the film calling you to attention. The vibrant colours bleed into the sets carefully and meticulously decorated to perfection. The acting in this film is top tier. Margot Robbie perfectly executed this role as Nellie with grit, mania and a never ending battle to be her truest broken self. Diego Calva and Brad Pitt are both tremendous in this picture. Honourable mention is Jean Smart as she is fantastic in this film. My only criticism would be the run time, I didn't feel the film really needed to be 3 hours 9 minutes long to show us or convey to us the story in the best possible way. I absolutely recommend this film to anyone with a love of old Hollywood, and cinema and it's fraught history.
The Haunting of Sharon Tate (2019)
Trash.
Sharon tate was eight and a half months pregnant when strangers entered her home after midnight, shot stabbed and brutalised the people she loved in front of her. After begging for her life she was stabbed 16 times. Sharon died calling out for her mother while her unborn son died inside of her. Those are the facts. Here's another one: this film is a waste of time and brain cells. Sharon tate and her family have already suffered enough. As if her highly publicised death wasn't horrible enough now you've got trash bag directors like Daniel Ferrands making trash bag films that add nothing to her legacy. Sharon once again is just a murder victim not a human being. Rest In Peace Sharon Tate.
Blonde (2022)
Pure Exploitation
A truly nauseating film with enough violence and prolonged sexual assault scenes to ruin your day.
This film is pointless and tasteless. When will Hollywood let Marilyn rest?
Blonde is such a wasted opportunity to add something new and fresh to Marilyn's memory. Why not explore her intellect? Her charm? Why not explore Monroe's acting skills and her development into a household name?
Instead they feed you depressing, hyper-sexualised exploitative trash and expect applause.
This pathetic film was made purely for profit, the director admits he's never seen any of her films and it shows. Save yourself the time and the brain cells, avoid this mess if you have any shred of respect for Marilyn Monroe.
